Displacement of a civil structure contains important information about structural behavior that helps confirm safety and serviceability. Displacement measurement by conventional devices such as LVDT is still challenging due to issues in the cost-effectiveness and accessibility to measurement locations. This paper presents a monocular vision-based displacement measurement system (VDMS) that is cost-effective and convenient installation. The proposed system is composed of a low-cost aftermarket camera, a specially-designed marker, and a laptop computer. The motion of the marker attached to the structure is captured by the video camera, that is subsequently converted to the time history of a dynamic displacement response using planar homography. Planar homography is a transformation matrix mapping any two planes in the three dimensional space, and it can map an image plane into the real marker's plane which may be at an angle with respect to the camera axis. The system was validated by a lab-scale test using a shaking table. Experimental results show proposed system has a good agreement with LDV regardless of camera positions. © international conference on Advances in Experimental Structural Engineering. In India, telemedicine services are provided through satellite communication, Web portals and mobile call centre services. These services enable people to interact with a specialized doctor who is in the other end of the country using videoconferencing and various channels as medium. This saves time and cost of the patient using the service. He/she gets all specialized medical instructions without having the need to see the doctor. This service may be ultimately useful when available to all the people in the country. But, it does not reach everyone in the country. Satellite communication is possible only in places where satellite link is established between the patient and a doctor and Web portals are accessible only by people who have complete knowledge about the existing system mechanism. These methods are mainly available only in urban areas. This is where the problem arises in India. Villages being the backbone of the country and farmers being its soul, they are not aware of these existing technologies and telemedicine application is completely new to them. Providing specialized medical services in cities is easy, but this is not the same for rural India. Therefore, a more efficient, convenient and user-friendly method of implementing telemedicine service is needed. In this paper, we extend this approach of telemedicine to the rural areas using interactive voice response (IVR) system. Since there has been a similar methods already established in urban areas, we are providing this newly proposed system for the rural areas for a better health care. © Springer India 2015.

Novelty detection in news events has long been a difficult problem. A number of models performed well on specific data streams but certain issues are far from being solved, particularly in large data streams from the WWW where unpredictability of new terms requires adaptation in the vector space model. We present a novel event detection system based on the Incremental Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) weighting incorporated with Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH). Our system could efficiently and effectively adapt to the changes within the data streams of any new terms with continual updates to the vector space model. Regarding miss probability, our proposed novelty detection framework outperforms a recognised baseline system by approximately 16% when evaluating a benchmark dataset from Google News.

A service Oriented Architecture aims to facilitate interaction of loosely coupled services in large-scale dynamic systems. Despite a decade's active research and development, Web services still remain undependable (Bourne et al., 2012). In literature many proposals attempt to overcome interoperability issues, particularly typical of not-orchestrated Web service (WS) compositions. Although these techniques aid to discover potential interoperability mismatches, they do not fit well with flexibility and dynamism, desirable characteristics e.g. in choreographies. Here unsafe run-time changes may compromise a correct execution. To support such dynamism and to mitigate the effects of such failures, we propose a flexible architecture able to realize dynamic WS compositions, supporting run-time monitoring and verification techniques. The technique we chose is a novel run-time algorithm capable to predict potential failures that can happen in near future states of a choreography. It admits an integration "a-priori" and monitors the run-time services behaviour to provide information about possible errors when these can happen.

Clinical Decision Support (CDS) applications have been widely recognized for improving health care quality and medical knowledge translation. However, its adoption and utilization in a real clinical environment is still subject to many factors, an important one of which is the lack of mechanism to easily integrate these applications to clinical workflow. This paper designs and develops an extensible CDS application integration and management system framework. This framework achieves interoperability between Clinical Information system (CIS) and CDS applications at two levels under predefined integration protocols;and through a mechanism of registration, management and delivery, various CDS applications can be delivered to targeted scenarios and executed in a context-aware way. This framework was validated in real clinical environment, and proved to be effective in both integration and interoperability. Meanwhile, targeted CDS application delivery further facilitates CDS in clinical promotion.

Although service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) are being increasingly used in business-critical scenarios, the applicability of Verification and Validation (V&V) is still very limited. The problem is that V&V activities have to be implemented at runtime to fit the characteristics of SOA. Recent proposals of runtime V&V techniques specific to SOA domain are far from being complete and a key issue lies in understanding how the "failures propagate" in a dynamic system and how to continuously verify its evolving elements. This paper introduces an approach to deal with the propagation of failures in a SOA environment. The proposed technique is based on three key steps: estimating the failure rate of the individual services, using fault injection to find the exposure of each service to failures from the invoked services, and estimating the impact of each service in the overall architecture. The overall approach is presented with a brief demonstration of its application. © 2015 IEEE.

The paper describes the use of the sequence diagrams in the design and analysis of the control software for biotechnological process. The goal was to automate the substrate preparation process. In many situations, a slight change in the substrate preparation procedure may lead to significant changes in the software performing this procedure. Assuming that the substrate can be prepared in two different ways (sequential or concurrent preparation of its components), it is shown that the UML sequence diagrams can be effective in analysis of the possible scenarios. As a result, one can obtain a control software that is suitable for each of the possible scenarios, and that can be easily implemented in the hierarchical distributed control system. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) is a symptomatology that affects between 2-5% of world populations and from which a high percentage have not been diagnosed. This syndrome presents serious consequences in daily life of the people who suffer it. Its detection requires an analysis in a hospital with specialized professionals and medical equipment, which entails long waiting lists. The new trends in Bring your Own Device (BYOD) and communication technologies allow designing new alternatives to current systems of diagnosis. In this paper a low-cost home-oriented system for remote monitoring and diagnosis of SAHS is presented. This system is based on the service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach and it is made up by different role-oriented subsystems, following a modular design in order to facilitate an incremental number of patients (scalability) and add new functionalities (extensibility). This system is proposed as a low-cost alternative to other detection methods currently implemented, with the main objectives of allowing a greater outreach to the population and reducing waiting lists in hospitals.

Resources such as quantities of transistors and memory, the level of integration and the speed of components have increased dramatically over the years. Even though the technologies have improved, we continue to apply outdated approaches to our use of these resources. Key computer science abstractions have not changed since the 1960's. Therefore this is the time for a fresh approach to the way systems are designed and used.

The development framework is the basic and core software resource which can provide a general and reusable structure among all the software applications. This paper proposes a rapid development framework (RDF) of enterprise information system based on software components and JavaEE, the paper not only describes the framework’s structure and the detailed functions of each parts in RDF, but also gives an application example.
