Novelty detection in news events has long been a difficult problem. A number of models performed well on specific data streams but certain issues are far from being solved, particularly in large data streams from the WWW where unpredictability of new terms requires adaptation in the vector space model. We present a novel event detection system based on the Incremental Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) weighting incorporated with Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH). Our system could efficiently and effectively adapt to the changes within the data streams of any new terms with continual updates to the vector space model. Regarding miss probability, our proposed novelty detection framework outperforms a recognised baseline system by approximately 16% when evaluating a benchmark dataset from Google News.

A service Oriented Architecture aims to facilitate interaction of loosely coupled services in large-scale dynamic systems. Despite a decade's active research and development, Web services still remain undependable (Bourne et al., 2012). In literature many proposals attempt to overcome interoperability issues, particularly typical of not-orchestrated Web service (WS) compositions. Although these techniques aid to discover potential interoperability mismatches, they do not fit well with flexibility and dynamism, desirable characteristics e.g. in choreographies. Here unsafe run-time changes may compromise a correct execution. To support such dynamism and to mitigate the effects of such failures, we propose a flexible architecture able to realize dynamic WS compositions, supporting run-time monitoring and verification techniques. The technique we chose is a novel run-time algorithm capable to predict potential failures that can happen in near future states of a choreography. It admits an integration "a-priori" and monitors the run-time services behaviour to provide information about possible errors when these can happen.

Clinical Decision Support (CDS) applications have been widely recognized for improving health care quality and medical knowledge translation. However, its adoption and utilization in a real clinical environment is still subject to many factors, an important one of which is the lack of mechanism to easily integrate these applications to clinical workflow. This paper designs and develops an extensible CDS application integration and management system framework. This framework achieves interoperability between Clinical Information system (CIS) and CDS applications at two levels under predefined integration protocols;and through a mechanism of registration, management and delivery, various CDS applications can be delivered to targeted scenarios and executed in a context-aware way. This framework was validated in real clinical environment, and proved to be effective in both integration and interoperability. Meanwhile, targeted CDS application delivery further facilitates CDS in clinical promotion.

The Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) is a symptomatology that affects between 2-5% of world populations and from which a high percentage have not been diagnosed. This syndrome presents serious consequences in daily life of the people who suffer it. Its detection requires an analysis in a hospital with specialized professionals and medical equipment, which entails long waiting lists. The new trends in Bring your Own Device (BYOD) and communication technologies allow designing new alternatives to current systems of diagnosis. In this paper a low-cost home-oriented system for remote monitoring and diagnosis of SAHS is presented. This system is based on the service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach and it is made up by different role-oriented subsystems, following a modular design in order to facilitate an incremental number of patients (scalability) and add new functionalities (extensibility). This system is proposed as a low-cost alternative to other detection methods currently implemented, with the main objectives of allowing a greater outreach to the population and reducing waiting lists in hospitals.
