simulation experiments generate large data sets that must be converted into recommendations for decision makers. This article explores using a Natural Language Generation (NLG) approach for writing summaries of simulation experiments. The article discusses the steps required to convert simulation experiment data to text and highlights the unique aspects of data to text for simulation experiments. Automation of report generation can potentially reduce the time and cost of simulation studies and improve the reporting of results. A prototype software system was developed and applied to a simulation to illustrate the benefits of a NLG approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Child obesity is a public health problem that is of concern of several countries around the world. Long-term effects of child obesity include prevalence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart-related illnesses. This paper presents an agent-based simulation framework to analyze the evolution of obesity in school-age children. In particular, in this paper we evaluate the impact of physical activity on the prevalence of child obesity using an agent-based simulation model. simulation results suggest that the fraction of overweight and obese children at the end of elementary school can be reduced by doing physical activity with moderate intensity. © 2013 IEEE.

The process of developing, verifying and validating models and simulations should be straightforward. Unfortunately, following conventional development approaches can render a model design that appeared complete and robust into an incomplete, incoherent and invalid simulation during implementation. An alternative approach is for subject matter experts (SMEs) to employ formal methods to describe their models. However, formal methods are rarely used in practice due to their intimidating syntax and semantics rooted in mathematics. In this paper we argue for a new approach to verification and validation that leverages two techniques from computer science: (1) model checking and (2) automated debugging. The proposed vision offers an initial path to replace conventional simulation verification and validation methods with new automated analyses that eventually will be able to yield feedback to SMEs in a familiar language. © 2013 IEEE.

The process of preparing patients for outpatient surgery is information intensive. However, medical records are often fragmented among different providers and systems. As a result, the preoperative assessment process is frequently prolonged by missing information, potentially leading to surgery delay or cancellation. In this study, we simulate an anesthesiology pre-operative assessment clinic to quantify the impact of patient information deficiency and to assist in the development of a patient-centered surgical home to mitigate this problem through better system-wide coordination. © 2013 IEEE.

Government economic policy regarding the financial markets in the United States has been focused on promoting self-regulation based on a belief in natural equilibrium. This has led to decreased regulation and permitted an increase in the complexity of financial assets that has to some degree exceeded the capability of the market to understand the fundamentals of what is being traded. This lack of understanding or information about these assets' values created liquidity problems, and contributed to the crises seen in both US and world markets. Through the use of an agent-based simulation model of an economic market, this paper looks at the effect of information on keeping the markets liquid and at potential strategies to protect markets from illiquidity failure. It considers how the three main government controlled market influences: interest rate targeting, 'information' regulation, and market making can affect market stability. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents an online simulation framework that can be used to support operational decisions within the context of Through-life Engineering Services. Acting as a closed-loop feedback control mechanism, the simulation model is physically coupled to the assets and will be triggered and automatically executed to assess a set of operational decisions related to maintenance scheduling, resource allocation, spare parts inventory etc. Experimental cases comparing the online simulation against the traditional approach will also be presented. The outcomes have demonstrated the prospects of the framework in enabling more effective/efficient operations of engineering services leading to high assets availability and reduced through-life costs. © 2013 IEEE.

An 'executable architecture' is defined as the use of dynamic simulation software to evaluate architecture models (DOD AFWG 2004). By modeling an existing network in the form of an 'as-is' architecture, we can create a simulation model, which when stimulated with appropriate traffic, can be an executable architecture. The DOD Architecture Framework (DODAF) prescribes a modeling framework to capture high-level system design and operational requirements. The system attributes from a DODAF-compliant architecture can directly load a network simulator (Hamilton 2006). The use of network simulation to study denial of service attacks is well known. However, modeling and simulation techniques can be used to evaluate intrusion detection systems, place and configure security appliances and to design appropriate access control mechanisms. This paper will discuss the enabling technologies necessary to mainstream architecture-based network simulation including visualization of security requirements, auto generation of network architecture artifacts and application of stochastic elements to the architecture. © 2013 IEEE.

Vietnamese industrialists have understood that simulation studies can help to form a more reliable manufacturing line than conventional methods that for the most based upon engineering experiences. However, the use of simulation has not been applied in designing the manufacturing line, and a confident method of designing a new manufacturing line or modifying the capacity of a current manufacturing line (CML) has remained a task in Vietnamese industrial plants. The main purpose of this research is to propose a new perspective of a simulation study in Vietnamese industry from an empirical point of view to implement the framework for designing a manufacturing line. The second purpose is to introduce the method and analytical procedures of modifying a CML utilized by a linear programming (LP) model for selecting. The proposed method was applied in an actual design project to confirm the feasibility of the framework. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper describes the process of developing a hybrid simulation model for a disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common cause of sight loss in people aged over 65. The model is implemented in the software AnyLogic, and combines discrete-event and agent-based simulation. Embedded in each agent there is also an individual compartmental model for disease progression. The overall aim of the hybrid model was to use the specific example of AMD to explore the wider links between the health and social care systems in the UK. We discuss the challenges of model development and the rationale for our modelling decisions, and reflect upon the advantages and disadvantages of using a hybrid model in this case. © 2013 IEEE.
