UML/OCL is perceived as the de-facto standard for specifying object-oriented models in general and data models in particular. Since recently, all data types of UML/OCL comprise two different exception elements: invalid ("bottom" in semantics terminology) and null (for "non-existing element"). This has far-reaching consequences on both the logical and algebraic properties of OCL expressions as well as the path expressions over object-oriented data structures, i. e., class models. In this paper, we present a formal semantics for object-oriented data models in which all data types and, thus, all class attributes and path expressions, support invalid and null. Based on this formal semantics, we present a set of OCL test cases that can be used for evaluating the support of null and invalid in OCL tools.

We discuss key properties that we have focused on when designing the Model-oriented programming language Umple and its support tools. Usability is key because we want to enable modellers to work rapidly, make fewer mistakes, and appreciate the benefits of modeling better. Completeness in code generation with respect to UML is important because most tools omit important semantics in the code they generate. Scalability is important because we want it to be possible to develop a system of arbitrary size. In this paper we highlight some of the essentials of how we have addressed these key properties in Umple. We also discuss how these properties can be used to compare modeling approaches.

Security for applications running on mobile devices is important. In this paper we present ExpressOS, a new OS for enabling high-assurance applications to run on commodity mobile devices securely. Our main contributions are a new OS architecture and our use of formal methods for proving key security invariants about our implementation. In our use of formal methods, we focus solely on proving that our OS implements our security invariants correctly, rather than striving for full functional correctness, requiring significantly less verification effort while still proving the security relevant aspects of our system. We built ExpressOS, analyzed its security, and tested its performance. Our evaluation shows that the performance of ExpressOS is comparable to an Android-based system. In one test, we ran the same web browser on ExpressOS and on an Android-based system, and found that ExpressOS adds 16 % overhead on average to the page load latency time for nine popular web sites.

Pattern matching, an important feature of functional languages, is in conflict with data abstraction and extensibility, which are central to object-oriented languages. Modal abstraction offers an integration of deep pattern matching and convenient iteration abstractions into an object-oriented setting; however, because of data abstraction, it is challenging for a compiler to statically verify properties such as exhaustiveness. In this work, we extend modal abstraction in the JMatch language to support static, modular reasoning about exhaustiveness and redundancy. New matching specifications allow these properties to be checked using an SMT solver. We also introduce expressive pattern-matching constructs. Our evaluation shows that these new features enable more concise code and that the performance of checking exhaustiveness and redundancy is acceptable.

The tremendous growth and diversification in the area of computer architectures has contributed towards an upsurge in the number of parallel programing paradigms, languages, and environments. However, it is often difficult for domain-experts to develop expertise in multiple programming paradigms and languages in order to write performance-oriented parallel applications. Several active research projects aim at reducing the burden on programmers by raising the level of abstraction of parallel programming. However, a majority of such research projects either entail manual invasive reengineering of existing code to insert new directives for parallelization or force conformance to specific interfaces. Some systems require that the programmers rewrite their entire application in a new parallel programing language or a domain-specific language. Moreover, only a few research projects are addressing the need of a single framework for generating parallel applications for multiple hardware platforms or doing hybrid programming. This paper presents a high-level framework for parallelizing existing serial applications for multiple target platforms. The framework, currently in its prototype stage, can semi-automatically generate parallel applications for systems with both distributed-memory architectures and shared-memory architectures through MPI, OpenMP, and hybrid programming. For all the test cases considered so far, the performance of the generated parallel applications is comparable to that of the manually written parallel versions of the applications. Our approach enhances the productivity of the end-users as they are not required to learn any low-level parallel programming, shortens the parallel application development cycle for multiple platforms, and preserves the existing version of serial applications. © 2013 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc.

The object oriented methodology has been applied in software engineering for a wide range of large and critical systems. One of the modeling languages frequently used for this purpose is UML. As yet, however, the means provided by UML to specify and deal with security concerns are rather sparse. In this paper we propose a practical approach that could readily be incorporated into existing software development processes. We begin by reviewing the main types of security concerns in the various phases of the software development cycle, and set up stereotypes to specify those concerns. The stereotypes are then attached to use case diagrams and later to activity diagrams (and other derived diagrams). At the implementation stage, security concerns can be transformed into more detailed aspects via AOP (aspect oriented programming) techniques. By maintaining the consistency of security stereotypes from phase to phase, the concerns about system security are implemented in a traceable fashion. Such use of security stereotypes does not require a high level of skills or deep knowledge of UML, and can therefore be integrated, with relatively little effort, with many current system development methodologies. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Modern software systems are built by composing components drawn from large repositories, whose size and complexity increase at a fast pace. Software systems built with components from a release of a repository should be seamlessly upgradeable using components from the next release. Unfortunately, users are often confronted with sets of components that were installed together, but cannot be upgraded together to the latest version from the new repository. Identifying these broken sets can be of great help for a quality assurance team, that could examine and fix these issues well before they reach the end user. Building on previous work on component co-installability, we show that it is possible to find these broken sets for any two releases of a component repository, computing extremely efficiently a concise representation of these upgrade issues, together with informative graphical explanations. A tool implementing the algorithm presented in this paper is available as free software, and is able to process the evolution between two major releases of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution in just a few seconds. These results make it possible to integrate seamlessly this analysis in a repository development process.

Model-driven development (MDD) can help verify the accuracy of models and generate source codes, which allows a programmer to minimize the development time required to evaluate the software so that he or she can focus on the modeling process. Thus, modeling should be taught with MDD because it allows students to acquire modeling skills in a short period of time. We conducted a course to teach UML modeling to two groups. The first group used the MDD tool, while the second did not. We elucidate the advantages of each case with and without the use of the MDD tool. Based on our results, we propose the effective use of MDD tools in UML modeling education.

Model transformation is the process of automatically generating a target model from a source model according to a set of transformation rules. Automatic model transformation has the potential to eliminate the complexity, the inconsistencies and faults that are inherent in a manual model transformation process. Many of the existing tools that automate the model transformation process require the encoding of transformation rules within the transformation process, which limits their reuse and usability in different contexts. This paper presents a tool that automates the model transformation of component-based systems specification. The tool takes an architectural specification as input and generates a behavior protocol as output. The transformation rules are described independently from the transformation process. This allows changing the transformation rules without affecting the transformation process. We discuss in detail the transformation rules for transforming a trustworthy component-based system, formally specified in an architecture description language (TADL), to an extended timed automata specification. The goal is to formally verify trustworthiness properties claimed in the source model by model checking the trustworthiness properties in the target model. By varying the target model and the set of transformation rules the same tool can be used to obtain different target models and use different verification techniques.
