We discuss the parallel implementation of singular perturbation approximation (SPA) model reduction methods for large-scale linear control systems. The methods are based on balanced truncation methods using full-rank factors of the system Gramians. These factors are computed via an efficient iterative scheme based on the sign function method for solving linear matrix equations. The implementation of these iterations and of the SPA formulae is shown to be highly efficient on parallel computers with distributed memory.

We describe the model reduction software developed for the control and systems library SLICOT. Besides a powerful collection of Fortran 77 routines implementing the last algorithmic developments for several well-known balancing related methods, we also describe model reduction tools developed to facilitate the usage of SLICOT routines in user friendly environments like MATLAB or Scilab. Extensive testing of the implemented tools has been done using both special benchmark problems as well as models of several complex industrial plants. Testing results and performance comparisons show the superiority of SLICOT model reduction tools over existing model reduction software.

Analysis of control systems with respect to parametric uncertainties is the subject of this paper. Various closed loop and MIMO structures containing uncertain parameters are considered. We show how symbolic and numerical computations can cooperate to do this job, i.e., the evaluation of the particular system function is performed symbolically. This is necessary since many unknown entries are present. However, analysis of the result can be done numerically and efficiently. Related software tools we call for include: the Symbolic Math Toolbox for Matlab, and the Polynomial Toolbox for Matlab with its powerful tools for studying parametric systems. This combination appears fruitful and has been applied successfully to robust control techniques at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

MvTools, (Multivariable Tools) is a toolbox for Matlab 5.3 developed within the Department of Electrical systems and Automation (DSEA), University of Pisa, with the aim to offering to the Matlab users (especially control engineers and control engineering students) a complete toolbox for linear systems analysis and robust control synthesis. All the operations are carried out by means of a single graphical user interface, which allows the management of all the different design steps, and the comparison between the most rewarded robust control techniques. MvTools is not meant to replace the main control synthesis toolboxes, but instead it relies on them to yield a single environment in which all their best capabilities are integrated and easily achieved. A help file in HTML format is provided and is accessible within the program.

Stateflow is a graphical design and development tool from Mathworks for modeling complex reactive systems based on Harel's (1987) statecharts. TTMcharts introduced by Ostroff (1997) are similar to statecharts with a simpler execution semantics and support for modeling timing properties. A Stateflow diagram can be augmented to a timed Stateflow diagram based on the semantics of TTMcharts. STeP (Stanford's Temporal Prover) is a tool to formally verify temporal specifications of reactive systems. The basic inputs to STeP are a model of reactive system expressed as a fair transition system, and a specification to be proved expressed in temporal logic. The paper describes a CAD tool SF2STeP that translates a timed Stateflow diagram to a fair transition system which can be used as an input to STeP. The correctness of a reactive system modeled in Stateflow can thus be formally verified using STeP with the help of this CAD tool.

Information operations (IO) are characterized by both the wide range of target/defended system dynamics as well as by the increased complexity of interaction of system components. This paper presents two related notions: 1) higher-level, relatively slow decision support systems can benefit from treating feedback control properties of relatively fast system processes; and 2) IO is a category of decision support systems that requires explicit treatment of the attack detection problem as a mixed-signal identification problem. Such a view of large-scale systems is a control system view since the fundamental characteristic of control system science is the study of feedback loops. The paper asserts that the IO vulnerability/survivability assessment problem is a "system of systems" problem containing feedback loops, discusses detecting IO attacks as a mixed-signal system identification problem, reviews several current design environments which support a "system of systems" approach, and discusses ideas on a testbed framework for conducting experiments to achieve online detection and reaction to IO attacks.

Robotic systems are well suited for decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) tasks in hazardous environments. Advanced semi-autonomous telerobotic solutions for D&D tasks go beyond simple video-based interaction and include virtual reality (VR) interfaces and flexible sensor integration. The capability of those systems range from real-time control tasks to graphical user interface components utilizing video and VR. This paper describes QRobot, a PC-based system for telerobotic D&D operations. The system integrates hardware interfacing, real-time joint level control, sensors, tool control, networking and task level programming as well as video and VR based operator interfaces. The system demonstrates that the personal computer (PC), a cost effective and widely used computing platform, is well suited to the integration of real-time control tasks and advanced user interfaces.

Real-Time Linux Target (RTLT) is a real-time Linux-based software environment for data acquisition and control that is integrated with MATLAB/SIMULINK. RTLT is a low-cost, user-friendly graphical tool for the design and implementation of digital computer control programs and is the first of its kind available under the Linux operating system. RTLT eliminates redundant hardware by using only one central processing unit (CPU) to perform deterministic real-time control computations as well as general-purpose non-deterministic processing of the Linux kernel and user programs (such as the user-interface), RTLT uses off-the-shelf consumer grade computer hardware, low-cost motion control boards, and a free operating system (OS). The non-proprietary open architecture makes this system more flexible than the current state-of-the-art as it is possible to combine various types of sensors from different vendors as inputs to one control program. The usual learning curve associated with new software tools is virtually eliminated as a result of the complete integration with the design and analysis tools provided by MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Hybrid (discrete/continuous) systems are systems that exhibit both discrete state and continuous state dynamics. In addition, these two aspects of system behavior interact to such a significant extent that they cannot be decoupled and must be analyzed simultaneously. We consider the modeling, simulation and sensitivity analysis of hybrid systems, with particular emphasis on the interactions between discrete and continuous subsystems. The discussion focuses on the hybrid automation representation of continuous time hybrid systems. Topics discussed include state event location, transfer functions for the continuous state at discontinuities, and parametric sensitivity analysis of hybrid systems.

Advances in the numerical algorithms and software for subspace-based linear multivariable system identification are described. Techniques for data compression of the input-output data, needed for the preliminary processing are investigated. They include standard QR factorization of a block-Hankel-block matrix, and the Cholesky factorization of the associated (inter)-correlation matrix built exploiting the block-Hankel structure. Structure exploiting algorithms and dedicated linear algebra tools, performing all the processing stages of two commonly used subspace identification algorithms, MOESP and N4SID, are presented. These techniques have been implemented in the new system identification toolbox for the SLICOT Library. Numerical results, showing the performance of the new algorithms and associated software, in comparison with the available tools, are given, and illustrate the advantages of the proposed numerical approaches.
