One of the computation prerequisites in concurrent engineering is to merge different commercial packages and in-house software into a common framework for computational experimenting. The paper reports on a possible solution thereof. In particular, the coupling with file driven software is discussed and a generic interface technique to this kind of software is presented. The control engineering environment software ANDECS serves to outline the way in which tool integration of file driven software is supported by modern CACE systems. However, this interface technique is not bound to the ANDECS system only. Thus it can be directly applied to link software to other modular CACE systems like MATLAB and Xmath.

An optimal input design problem in frequency domain is discussed for quick detection of the system fault without affecting the original system in normal mode. The input is designed to enlarge the distance measured by the Kullback discrimination information measure between the system models corresponding to the normal and the fault modes in single fault mode case. The idea is then extended to multiple fault modes case (fault diagnosis problem). In this case, the auxiliary input is designed to maximize the minimum distance among the distances between the normal and several fault modes in order to detect the true fault mode. Numerical simulation results indicate the applicability of the proposed auxiliary input in fault detection and fault diagnosis.

The authors propose a controller design automation system. The system consists of a requirement interpretation block, a modeling block, an analysis/design block, and a verification block. The requirement interpretation block transforms the specifications in terms of the application to those in terms of control. The analysis/design block selects an optimal control structure and determines the controller parameters. In many cases the designed controller has to satisfy multiple specification items at the same time. So the authors introduce the LMI approach in the analysis/design block. To treat control system design more generally, the authors also add a normalization module in the modeling block. The configuration of the system and the analysis/design block are described.

The solution complexity of a synthesized control model of an automated manufacturing system grows exponentially in the number of constituent components in the system (Ho, 1992), thus resulting in the control model being either theoretically untractable in computation (Ramadge, 1989) or practically unfeasible in implementation. By taking advantage of both Petri nets and supervisory control theory, this paper presents a new methodology, called deterministic finite capacity automaton, which when used to model the control of an automated manufacturing system can significantly reduce model complexity. By taking into account the nature of manufacturing automation and combining the technology advances in multiprocessing systems, an automaton-based control model capable of running coordinated computing processes is defined. An adjustable language is introduced into the control model, to make it function more efficiently.

This paper addresses the problem of the global stabilization of some linear systems with constrained controls, subject to some disturbances, by means of a saturated control law. The perturbations are assumed a priori unknown but belonging to some domain. Firstly, for a fixed control law, the domain of admissible perturbations has to be determined in order to guarantee the global stability of the closed-loop system. Next, for a fixed domain of admissible perturbations the control law has to be determined. Further, from considered perturbations, both the conditions which allow to guarantee the global stabilization of the closed-loop system with eigenvalues assignment in a specified region are studied.

A protocol mismatch occurs when heterogeneous networks try to communicate with each other, and a protocol conversion mechanism is needed for proper communication. We present a systematic approach to protocol conversion using the recent theory of supervisory control of discrete event systems. We study the problem of designing a converter for a given mismatched pair of protocols, using their specifications, and the specifications for the channel and the user services. We introduce the notion of converter languages and use it to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of protocol converter and present an effective algorithm for computing it whenever it exists.

To assist the identification of nonlinear dynamic systems, a set of tools has been developed for the MATLAB(R) environment. The tools include a number of different model structures, highly effective training algorithms, functions for validating trained networks, and pruning algorithms for determination of optimal network architectures. The toolbox should be regarded as a nonlinear extension to the system identification toolbox provided by The MathWorks, Inc. This paper gives a brief overview of the entire collection of toolbox functions.

There is enormous downward pressure on cost and the time to develop powertrain control systems. Today's automotive programs have aggressive timing, technically complex powertrains and demanding performance targets. Success depends upon producing well engineered powertrain control systems with cost and performance in careful balance. To help this one of the most important quality tools that can be applied during the development process is rapid prototyping. This provides quantitative engineering data at an early stage and an effective lever to take time and effort out of the development process. This paper explores the role of rapid prototyping in the upfront investigation phase associated with system definition, design and analysis, where a fast, but structured process is needed to progress from customer and legal requirements, associated with the vehicle platform, the market and business factors, to the point in the vehicle development program where the hardware and software are principally fixed and only relatively small modifications can be made. It is suggested that the use of rapid prototyping must be considered carefully alongside the use of CASE and cacsd tools, in order to provide the overall environment in which to engineer the architecture of the control system and develop its functionality and performance. The particular information transferred between these tools, the timing of this and the deliverables made to other parts of the vehicle development program are crucial to a successful implementation.

The paper presents an efficient and versatile software tool DYNAST for modeling, simulation and numerical as well as semisymbolic analysis of general nonlinear dynamic systems, both in time and frequency domains. Besides a very flexible form of block diagrams, DYNAST admits system models characterized by a set of algebraic-differential equations, multipole diagrams, or by a combination of the two approaches. Unlike block diagrams, the multipole diagrams allow for portraying the actual physical structure of the modeled real systems in a very authentic yet comfortable way without deriving any equations or constructing any graphs. As a kernel of the control design toolset, DYNAST supports systematic and global design methodologies for dynamic systems ranging from the detailed physical models mimicking real system prototypes up to the high-abstraction models suitable for control synthesis.

There is some concern about the numerical stability of algorithms that use the matrix sign function to solve Riccati and Lyapunov equations and to find bases of invariant subspaces. In this paper, we demonstrate that evaluating the matrix sign function is a more ill-conditioned computational problem than the problem of finding bases of the two invariant subspaces. Nevertheless, we also give perturbation and error analyses, which show that the accuracy of the Newton iteration with the scaling for the computation of the invariant subspaces in most circumstances is competitive with conventional methods.
