In practical motion control systems, high fidelity model of the system is fundamental for design, analysis and implementation of control algorithm. Linear Time Invariant (LTI) model approaches provide simplify approach to classical controller design and simulation. However, such approach usually leads to poor real-time performance on the actual system. On the other hand, obtaining nonlinear parametric model has been an arduous task. This paper presents non-parametric modeling approach using an optimized Nonlinear Autoregressive with eXogenous inputs network (NARX-network) with Multiobjective Differential Evolution (MODE). The hybrid algorithm, MODE-NARX addresses challenges of network parameters determination in the conventional NARX network, while providing optimal performance. A laboratory scale motion control systems is used to evaluate the performance of the algorithm. Based on simulation and comparative results analysis performed the proposed hybrid technique outperformed the common well-known PEM-ARMA model with up to 80% better accuracy, and better generalization performance across varying datasets.

To improve the power utilization of photovoltaic (PV) system, this paper proposes a circuit topology with partial power regulation based on distributive maximum power point tracking. In this topology, MPPT is performed on each PV panel by regulating a part of generated power through the attached flyback converter. By taking account for the efficiencies of the flyback converters, the system global maximum power point (SGMPP) can be estimated. As the partially shaded condition on the serial PV panels changes, the SGMPP can be re-estimated with the new voltages and currents on the PV panels. To verify the theoretical analyses of the proposed approach, a laboratory system formed by three serial PV panels is set up for experimental tests. The tested results demonstrate that the system is capable of executing partial power regulation to track the estimated SGMPP and under partially shaded conditions.

In this paper, a Finite Element Model of a classical guitar was developed, and then compared to empirical data and actual prototypes. Our previous work showed the effects of wood material properties on the vibration modes of a simple model of a classical guitar body without the bracing and air coupling. This paper compares a more comprehensive finite-element model for the coupled string, body and air. Using COMSOL Multiphysics, Eigenfrequency and frequency response simulations were compared to an actual Chladni experiment. A model for D'Addario Pro Arte strings were also developed using manufacturer's specifications. The string model simulation showed 16.68 cents absolute average deviation with 7.21 cents deviation range. Differences on the mode frequencies between the body and the coupled system were also observed. Lastly, the differences between the observed modes of the actual classical guitar and the coupled finite-element model lie within 21% percent.

This paper presents a design and implementation of virtual process using LabVIEW in combination with Modbus TCP protocol for fieldbus control system (FCS). A level virtual process has been simulated in LabVIEW supported by NI input/output broad (NI - myDAQ), providing the 0-5V analog input and output signals. It is used to control actuators and to read data from sensors of the simulated process. Arduino broads incorporated with Ethernet shields are the Modbus TCP/voltage converter, communicating the data between programmable logic controller (PLC) that acts like a client and Arduino servers. Therefore, the virtual process can be controlled by the real PLC, and can be monitored by the real monitoring system over TCP/IP network. The experimental results show that the data communication among all devices works well. The mean absolute percentage error between both processes is less than 5.24%. In addition, the proposed model is very flexible and low cost. Hence, it is suitable for teaching and training.

This paper presents a motion control of a triple link inverted pendulum on two-wheeled system, through Interval Type-2 Fuzzy logic control based Particle Swarm Optimization. Despite this model's heightened non-linearity and complexity for being a triple link system, it has enabled additional degree of freedom for having a two-wheeled mechanism. The model was developed in SimWise 4D to maintain its complex features, while allowing observations to the system's movements. The developed system was then integrated with Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic control, as designed in Matlab/Simulink. Specifically, Particle Swarm Optimization was applied to obtain the optimal values for input/output gain and parameters of the Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic control, towards enhancing the system's performance. Results have shown that the proposed controller was able to perform forward and backward motions control to the system in an upright position. The system is able to perform motion task with recorded system velocity of 0.04m/s and 0.02m/s for forward and backward motions, respectively. The controller was then evaluated based on its velocity and angular position or in stable manner. This system is envisaged to be very vital in the development of mobile robots with extended functionality.

Substantial integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity distribution networks can possibly cause voltage disturbances. Methods to alleviate renewable induced disturbances include installation of control systems with active devices hosted at secondary substations. In addition to renewable, electric vehicle is also anticipated to pose challenges to the operation of distribution networks. Managing scenarios of renewable and electric vehicle energy demand unpredictability and peer-to-peer energy systems necessitate control systems with higher degrees of intelligence. A collection of distributed smart controllers create a group of computations-at-edges, is the likely practical candidate architecture for fast responses, while avoiding single point central failures. Distributed and smarter control systems based on widely available hardware can promote active end user participation in the energy landscape. The control system smartness relies on data sourced from multiple stakeholders including prosumers. Insights and intelligence harvested out of aggregated data increase smartness of system for autonomous operations. Data driven systems must be reliable and protected against cyber-attacks. Scenarios of possible cyberattacks and data securities are described to point out its significance. A mix of cryptographic algorithms evaluated to provide different roles of data protections such as authentication and encryption.

Recently, Powered Knee Orthosis (PKO) becomes an essential assisting device in serving rehabilitation activities such as gait, neuropathic gait and stroke gait. Existing PKOs are mainly designed to perform rehabilitation activities and most of them fully utilized PKO to drive knee movement. This may contributed to discouragement of the voluntary able-body to perform knee movement activities and led to muscle degradation. This paper presents the development of PKO for knee swing activities aided by functional electrical stimulation, FES. The PKO is designed with high back-drive ability to allows FES-assisted movement during knee extension. The experiments were implemented on two healthy subjects performing knee swing for three different conditions; Knee swing with PKO, with FES and with both FES and PKO. The knee angle movement were measured and recorded. The results demonstrate the successful of the proposed FES-assisted knee swing with PKO. Thus the developed PKO is able to contribute to the FES-assisted knee swing activities.

This paper presents an improved version of a Spiral Dynamic Algorithm (SDA). The original SDA is a relatively simple optimization algorithm. It uses a spiral strategy to move search agents within the feasible search space. However, SDA suffers from a premature convergence due to an unbalanced diversification and intensification throughout its search operation. Hence, the algorithm unable to acquire an optimal accuracy solution. An Opposition learning is adopted into SDA to improve the searching strategy of the SDA agents. Therefore in the proposed strategy, a random and a deterministic approaches are synergized and complement each other. The algorithm is tested on several benchmark functions in comparison to the original SDA. A statistical nonparametric Wilcoxon sign rank test is conducted to analyze the accuracy achievement of both algorithms. For solving a real world application, the algorithms are applied to optimize a PID controller for a flexible manipulator system. Result of the test on the benchmark functions shows that the Opposition based SDA outperformed the SDA significantly. For solving the PID control design, both algorithms acquire PID parameters and hence can control the flexible manipulator very well. However, the proposed algorithm shows a better control response.

The continuous increase in the global energy demand obliges the necessity of energy production and its efficient utilization. The energy conservation is a primary concern of every process industry due to the increasing fuel prices. The distillation column is considered as one of the essential energy-intensive unit operations of any chemical and process industry. Therefore, process engineers are finding ways for efficient process monitoring and better control. However, the non-productive nature and the complexities in the column has increased the difficulties to handle this unit operation. Hence, it is desirable to operate the column efficiently to attain high product quality. The energy consumptions during distillation can have a substantial impact on overall profitability. A critical review of the various disturbances and operational difficulties has been presented. The causes, consequences and recommendation to handles various anomalies in distillation has also been presented which may help to identify the root cause while doing detection and diagnosis of various faults.

This paper presents an image processing technique to identify lip expressions in producing control instructions. The purpose is to assist patients suffering from Tetraplegia especially in their mobility by providing alternative ways of controlling devices. In this work, motorized wheelchairs are used as the studied mobility device. Some of the methods used in motorized wheelchair do give user difficulties as they need extra effort in controlling the device. Thus, this project aimed to study, design and implement an image processing technique to differentiate four different lips expressions. The classified four different lip expressions will then be used as instructions for forward, turn right, turn left and stop movements of motorized wheelchairs. A technique of morphological processing is applied to the image of the face in order to extract the lips region. The obtained region is then calculated for several parameters. The parameters classification is done using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to determine the category of lips expressions. In the performance analysis, the developed technique is proven to successfully classify the lips expressions into the categories and produce appropriate instructions for the use in motorized wheelchair control.
