The peak demand reduction during peak hour is a challenge to the retail energy providers. Demand response program plays a major role to fulfil this purpose. The small household appliances like electric water heater can participate in the demand response program by aggregating it in the smart building energy management system. This paper discusses demand response possibilities of a residential electric water heater, the overall consumption profile, temperature profile and the financial benefit in the consumer level. The direct load control demand response method in yearly timeframe is proposed and applied. Realtime electricity pricing with incentive-based demand response is considered and applied to the direct load control with financial benefit to the consumers. The study includes the difference between normal consumption and consumption after using DLC, normal temperature profile and temperature profiling after DLC. The results exhibit that there is significant energy consumption reduction in the consumer level without making any discomfort.

This paper presents two estimation based control strategies for an aerobic process used in wastewater biological treatment carried out inside a CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor). Our control objective is to keep the effluent pollutant concentration at a desired low level, and also to ensure that the dissolved oxygen concentration follows some imposed references. Therefore we propose two new control schemes for robust-adaptive and model predictive control, taking into account the Bayesian based weighted values of the state's estimations provided by an interval observer and a parameter estimator of the unknown growth rate. A comparison of the effectiveness of the two approaches is illustrated by numerical simulations performed under different conditions related to some degree of uncertainness of a continuous wastewater treatment bioprocess.

In this paper, a function-based modulation control strategy for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in a distributed generation (DG) system is proposed. Two novel modulation functions are introduced in this paper for the switching state functions of the lower and upper sub-modules of the interfaced MMC, which is considered as the main contribution of this control technique over other control methods. The amplitude and phase angle of the output current of the interfaced MMC can be easily applied to the proposed modulation functions to prepare a specific active and reactive power injection into the demand side. In addition, the equivalent capacitors of the lower and upper sub-modules are defined by taking into account the introduced modulation functions to guarantee an appropriate operation for the interfaced MMC in DG systems. Simulation results validate the capability of the proposed control method for MMCs under load variations.

This paper presents a performance evaluation of a proportional-integral (PI) with proportional-derivative (PD) feedforward control for the output voltage of a single-phase off-line uninterruptible power supply (UPS) without using additional sensors. The controlsystem is explained and simulation results are presented to analyze the steady state and transient response of the implemented voltage control. A laboratorial prototype was developed, and acquired experimental results considering linear and nonlinear loads are presented and discussed, corroborating the obtained simulation results.

This paper presents a methodology for height control of a quadrotor that transports a constant unknown load, given the estimates on both weight and state variables, based on measurements from motion sensors installed on-board. The proposed controller is the sub-optimal steady state solution of an LQR problem, where an integrative effect is added to guarantee null steady state position error on average. The in flight load weight estimation problem is tackled resorting to a multiple-model adaptive estimator, providing also vertical velocity estimates. The controlsystem obtained is validated both in simulation and resorting to an off-the-shelf commercially available quadrotor equipped with an IMU, an ultrasound height sensor, and a barometer, among other sensors.
