The control of bioprocesses remains an inherently complex problem. Specialist's efforts are directed towards ensuring stability and process efficiency. The necessity to obtain performances without installing a lot of redundant and dedicated expensive equipment, forces the developers to use the techniques available to processing all the information that are "hidden" in the bioprocess and to compensate the uncertain and time varying of parameters. This paper presents the design of some control methods, able to deal with the uncertainties, for a complex photoautotrophic growth bioprocess. To develop an efficiency control law it is necessary to estimate the real values of the inputs. Specifically, the methods proposed in the paper, allowing the assessment of carbon dioxide flow, input into the photobioreactor with a high degree of uncertainty.

Economic model predictive control (EMPC) combines real-time economic optimization and feedback control in the same algorithm, resulting in a single-layer structure that is especially suitable for non-linear processes operating under strong disturbances. This strategy is used to enhance the performance of WWTPs in terms of economics and effluent quality. The compromise between the optimization of economic and effluent quality objectives in the EMPC is addressed. An heuristic strategy is introduced in the formulation of the EMPC to improve its performance dealing with the multiobjective optimization.

Visible light communication (VLC) has become a promising complement to its radio-frequency (RF) counterpart. In VLC systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has drawn much attention due to its high data rate, simple equalization and robustness to the inter-symbol interference (ISI). In this paper, we present a comparative performance evaluation of several classical optical OFDM schemes, including DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT), unipolar OFDM (U-OFDM) and Flip OFDM. Since DCO-OFDM suffers from energy efficiency loss due to addition of DC-bias, whilst ACO-OFDM, PAM-DMT and U-OFDM/Flip OFDM are spectrally inefficient due to their unique frame structures, the state-of-the-art energy-and spectrum-efficient optical OFDM schemes are investigated, including asymmetrically clipped DC-biased optical OFDM (ADO-OFDM), hybrid ACO-OFDM (HACO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped absolute value optical OFDM (AAO-OFDM), the spectral and energy efficient OFDM (SEE-OFDM), layered ACO-OFDM (LACO-OFDM), enhanced U-OFDM (eU-OFDM), optical OFDM with index modulation (O-OFDM-IM) and optical dual-mode index modulation aided OFDM (DM-OFDM). In this paper, their principles are firstly illustrated, then performance comparisons are conducted for those optical OFDM schemes in terms of spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and computational complexity. Since light emitting diodes (LEDs) need to support both the illumination and communication simultaneously, dimming control should be considered in VLC systems. Therefore, dimmable optical OFDM for practical VLC systems incorporating illumination is also addressed.

This paper proposes the use of fuzzy logic based structures for the control of storage tank capacities within a new catchment and sewer network benchmark model [1]. The control structures are considering wastewater level in the storage tank, the level in the storage tank from downstream and influent flow rate, in order to have a better use of the storage capacity of the tanks during the rain events and to increase the coordination between the tanks. The final aim is to improve the functioning of the sewer network in terms of overflows. The paper also proposes a system modification by considering the possibility to have overflows from a tank that in the initial model doesn't have this option. The obtained results by numerical simulation of the catchment and sewer network benchmark model fully justify the considered approach, being one of the first works that uses this new benchmark model.

Robot manipulation has been an interesting topic for researchers over decades. While researches are going on, different problems occurred. One of the most important problems is energy consumption. Because operation time of mobile robots is fully related with energy consumption. In this study two main problems are taken into consideration, first one is minimization of energy consumption and second one is obstacle avoidance. For this purpose, a simple robot manipulator with two degrees of freedom is chosen. The objective function is selected as a function of applied torque values at the joints, minimization of objective function, results in minimization of motor currents. The algorithm checks if there is a contact between the obstacles and the manipulator, while the algorithm is searching for the trajectory polynomial that requires minimum energy consumption. Finally, the algorithm finds the trajectory polynomial that contains no contact between the manipulator and the obstacles, also minimizes energy consumption.

Load frequency controller is networked in noisy environment which is produced by frequent switching of load. Hence, this paper aims to develop a controller which is less sensitive to noise. Presented paper introduces a PID-derivative filter load frequency controller for the two area interconnected thermal-thermal with wind power plant. The wind turbine equipped with inertial control and droop control participating in the frequency regulation. The proposed controller is based on cascading of derivative filter with PID controller. The Z-N, tuning method is used for tuning of PID controller. Time domain analysis has been performed in MATLAB/SIMULINK ver. 2013 a for testing of applicability of proposed controller. The simulation results of the PID-derivative filter load frequency controller have been compared with conventional proportional integral derivative controller. A substantial improvement in stability of the system has been perceived with PID-derivative filter controller alleviating its applicability. Simulated results given in the paper illustrate the feasibility of the PID-derivative filter load frequency controller.

Substantial amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) have been demonstrated to be emitted in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). One of the GHG with a great influence is nitrous oxide (N2O), which is emitted during the nitrification and denitrification processes in a biological wastewater treatment. This paper proposes the implementation of a control strategy in order to reduce N2O emissions in the nitrification process. Due to the fact that N2O emissions are produced as an intermediate in the nitrification process, the idea of the present work is based on the implementation of a nitrite control by manipulating dissolved oxygen (SO) in order to avoid partial nitrification and thus to reduce N2O peaks. A hierarchical control strategy is proposed, where the higher level is composed of an affine function and the lower level of a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller. A modified version of Benchmark Simulation Model 2 (BSM2G) that includes GHG emissions is used for the evaluation. The simulation results show that the proposed control strategy achieve the reduction of GHG emissions by reducing N2O. However, additional control strategies must also be implemented to take into account the other evaluation criteria of the plant.

While there has been a belief over the past few years that virtual network functions(VNFs) should be built on common servers, we argue that it can lead to limited performance and large up/down traffic. This paper proposes a new idea of shifting part of NFV functions from software packages to common hardware devices to promote overall performance. Then we present the design and implementation of PPAP, a Packets Processing Acceleration Platform for NFV. It offers high flexibility by allowing functions to control the processing flow of *** match tables and virtualization techniques ensure isolation among VNF instances.

The gastroenterology specialty could benefit from the introduction of Computer Assisted Decision (CAD) systems, since gastric cancer is a serious concern in which an accurate and early diagnosis usually leads to a good prognosis. Still, the way doctors interact with these systems is very important because it will often determine its embracement or rejection, as any gains in productivity will frequently hinge on how comfortable they are with it. Using other types of interaction paradigms such as voice and motion control, is important in a way that typical inputs such as keyboard and mouse are sometimes not the best choice for certain clinical scenarios. In order to ascertain how a doctor could control a hypothetical CAD system during a gastroenterology exam, we measured the natural response of users when faced with three different task requests, using three types of interaction paradigms: voice, gesture and endoscope. Results fit in what was expected, with gesture control being the most intuitive to use, and the endoscope being on the other edge. All the technologies are mature enough to cope with the response concepts the participants gave us. However, when having into account the scenario context, better natural response scores may not always be the best choice for implementation. That way, simplification or reduction of tasks, along with a well tought-out interface, or even mixing more oriented paradigms for particular requests, could allow for better system control with fewer inconveniences for the user.

This paper investigates various aspects related to demand modeling and line-planning for bus transport systems based on data elicited from Electronic Ticket Machine (ETM). The ETM data has not been explored thoroughly for transportation planning although it is nowadays collected and compiled by public transport undertakings on a regular basis. The data used in the study is part of transactions on ticket sales by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) maintained at 6 bus depots in Trivandrum city for the period between 2010 and 2013. The data collected through ETM is immensely huge with average monthly passenger transactions of approximately one million. The database can be audited and compiled to determine the passenger demand, operator's performance, and effectiveness of the service provided. It is possible to determine the origin-destination (OD) matrix of the bus commuters by querying the ETM database using a specially developed program in MATLAB®. The OD data will assist in travel demand modelling, decision-making, and formulation of strategies for future preplanning of the transit system. The work presented in this paper provides details on the block-diagram developed for the formulation of the programme, and a demonstration of its capabilities. In a similar manner, it is also possible to determine the link-volume in terms of passenger flow on the transit network using a specially developed program. Additionally, it is also possible to elicit details on the load-rate with information on boarding and alighting of passengers at bus stops in addition to performance-related statistical details can be elicited from the ETM database. It is proposed to develop MATLAB® based programs for the same. The work described herein also includes description on the use of the time-series approach in short-term demand forecasting. The present work proposes a number of analytical methods that can be employed to derive information from ETM data for travel demand modeling,
