Ambient assisted living (AAL) delivers IT solutions that aim to facilitate and improve lives of the disabled, elderly, and chronically ill people. Mobility is a key issue for elderly people because their physical activity, in general, improves their quality of life and keep health status. Then, this paper presents an AAL framework for caregivers and elderly people that allow them to maintain an active lifestyle without limiting their mobility. This framework includes four AAL tools for mobility environments: i) a fall detection mobile application;ii) a biofeedback monitoring system trough wearable sensors;iii) an outdoor location service through a shoe equipped with Global Positioning system (GPS);and iv) a mobile application for caregivers that take care of several elders confined to a home environment. The proposal is evaluated and demonstrated and it is ready for use.

Trajectory recognition of the moving objects is the basic problem of the activity analysis. To recognize the incomplete trajectory caused by the video frame loss or the occlusion, we use the asynchronous hidden Markov model (AHMM) to improve the recognition accuracy. Multi-target trajectory observations are obtained using background subtraction method in which the background model is generated in HSV color space for better shadow control. To ensure the validity of the comparison between the AHMM and the hidden Markov model (HMM), the same initial parameter set is adopted in EM algorithms for each method. The hidden states of the AHMM are estimated by the E-step. Finally, the maximum likelihood of the test samples relative to all the trained models is computed, the maximum value is saved, and the corresponding model is the recognition result. Experiments indicate that the AHMM performs better than the HMM in the recognition of the incomplete trajectory.

Electric field emission of electrical appliances has become an important problem, especially when testing for safety and compliance with regulations of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). To confirm the safety and compliance of an electrical appliance, it is important to measure the levels of the emitted electric and magnetic fields from this appliance and compare them to the exposure limit values set by the international standards. Moreover, modeling these emitted fields can aid understanding their characteristics and ease investigating how different systems react to such emission. However, a good model depends mainly on the accuracy and robustness of the measurement methodology. Hence, the aim of this paper is to present a measurement methodology and a frequency domain model for the emitted electric field of vacuum cleaners using system identification tools. The proposed model is a data-driven model where the recorded signal is used to construct the model using polynomial model estimation methods. Measurement setup, related work and the model equation are presented accordingly.

Knee-FES-ergometer for knee swinging exercise is introduced as a hybrid exercise for restoration of function of the knee for stroke patients through the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The aim of the new knee-FESergometer is to provide high intensity knee swinging exercise. It is able to reduce required electrical stimulation and will able to elongate the exercise duration while avoiding early muscle fatigue. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is used to control the knee trajectory for the purpose of smooth knee swinging exercise. However, conventional FLC rely on human experiences and trial and error for parameter identifications. In this work, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to tune the FLC to maintain a smooth swinging exercise. The performance of the proposed GA tuned FLC is compared with a manually tuned FLC. Results shows that the GA tuned FLC offers encouragingly better performance.

The study of static friction in controlengineering is the subject of many researches due to its impact on degradation of performance of the control loops. Mathematical model of systems with static friction is not straight forward. Precise and proper model of this phenomenon is a key factor in model-based control to mitigate its effect. By increasing number of smart valve in industry, demand for identification of such valves is rising. In these valves, identification of process is limited to control signal (OP) and valve position (MV). By taking advantage of Hammerstein approach, identification is divided in two parts, linear dynamic part and nonlinear static part. In this paper, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is used for identification of nonlinear static part of the plant. The linear dynamic part can be identified using linear identification methods. Results reveal that ANFIS which integrates both neural networks and fuzzy logic principles and has potential to capture the benefits of both in a single framework can capture well the key model of the systems with smart valves involved in static friction.
