Blood vessel detection from high resolution fundus images is a necessary step in several medical applications. Automatic blood vessels detection is a computing intensive task which raises the need for accelerated hardware architectures. In this paper, we propose a scalable hardware architecture for blood vessel detection using a matched filter (MF). the algorithm is made hardware friendly using parallel processing and efficient resources sharing to achieve real-time performances. the paper also introduces a tool for the automatic generation of an HDL description based on the proposed architecture as a template. the tool takes as input the parameters of the filter to deal with the parameter selection problem and to make their choice more flexible. Performances in terms of area utilization and maximum frequency are reported. Several designs were verified and implemented on an FPGA platform. the results show significant improvements over the state of the art implementations, up to a factor of 10x for high resolution fundus images.

In this paper a hardware-software system for vehicle detection and counting at intersections is presented. It has been implemented and evaluated on the heterogeneous Zynq platform. the vehicle detection is based on the concept of virtual detection lines (VDL). Differences in colour, horizontal edges and Census transform results between areas around the VDL for two consecutive frames are used to disclosure particular vehicles. this part of the system is designed in hardware description language and implemented in the reconfigurable resources of the Zynq platform. Information about the vehicle presence, along with the time-spatial image obtained at the VDL are transmitted and processed on the ARM core integrated in the Zynq device. this allows to perform further analysis and eliminate false or multiple detections. the solution has been evaluated on several video sequences recorded in various conditions: sunny day (the occurrence of deep shadows), cloudy day, rain and night-time. the system could be an important element of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) i. e. applied in a smart camera.

Although the research on the design of heterogeneous concurrent systems has a long and rich history, a unified design methodology and tool support have not emerged so far. therefore, the creation of such systems remains a difficult, time-consuming and error-prone process. the absence of principled support for system evaluation and optimization at high level of abstraction makes the quality of the resulting implementation strongly dependent on the experience or individual preferences of the designer. In this work we are presenting TURNUS, a unified dataflow design space exploration framework for heterogeneous parallel systems. this open source framework represents a decade of research on high-level modelling and simulation methods and tools for system level performance estimation and optimization. Last year we presented heuristic algorithms that were focused on the results of exploration in terms of algorithmic optimization, rapid performance estimation, application throughput, buffer size dimensioning and power optimization. this year we are presenting the novelties that have been introduced in TURNUS such as clock gating, pipelining optimization, kernel splitting algorithms, advanced partitioning algorithms and scheduling optimization based on model predictive control techniques.

Technology scaling enables today the design of ultra-low cost wireless body sensor networks for wearable biomedical monitors. the typical behaviour of such systems consists of multi-channel input biosignals acquisition, data compression and final output transmission or storage. To achieve minimal energy operation and extend battery life, several aspects must be considered, ranging from signal processing to architectural optimizations. the recently proposed Rakeness-based Compressed Sensing (CS) paradigm deploys the localization of input signal energy to further increase compression without sensible RSNR degradation. Such output size reduction allows for trading off energy from the compression stage to the transmission or storage stage. In this paper we analyze such tradeoffs considering a multi-core DSP for input biosignal computation and different technologies for either transmission or local storage. the experimental results show the effectiveness of the Rakeness approach (on average approximate to 44% more efficient than the baseline) and assess the energy gains in a technological perspective.

this short paper introduces a closed-loop design optimization method for self-organizing and self-optimizing networked systems with a focus on signal processing and control. the design process starts with creating graph-based model of the system using a dedicated modeling language. the design is exported and converted to executable code in order to obtain the properties of the runtime behavior of the system using a simulation environment. the embedding optimization loop iteratively invokes the evaluation and searches for optimal architectures and parameterization in the user defined design space. A distinguishing feature of the tool is that it allows for runtime changes in the models, i.e. it is capable of evaluating runtime reconfigurable architectures. the design space is split into two disjunct sub-spaces: one of them defines the runtime reconfigurability (the self-* capabilities), the other defines the region of design time optimization. the tool is demonstrated via a real-time monitoring application.

Possessing the capability of breaking through the limitation of geographic conditions, Space-Terrestrial Heterogeneous networks play a significant role for global coverage capacity, which however pose new challenges to the network architecture design. In this paper, we first propose novel architectures for the considered space-terrestrial heterogeneous networks. the location accuracy of the workpiece is the key problem in the glue dispensing operation of the automobile engine cover. A vision location system is designed for the glue dispensing robot to locate the position of the feature points in the engine cover. the system correct the original teaching trajectory in real time to maintain the accuracy of the gluing operation. the system is based on a digital signal processor (DSP) dedicated to image processing for its real-time performance. image preprocessing operations including gray value linear transformation and median filtering are applied to modify the image quality for the subsequent feature-point detection procedure. Experiments are conducted and the result shows that the system is feasible after the calibration of the camera.
