the Brazilian energy transmission system is composed of approximately 160 thousand kilometers of lines that cross the country. the disturbances which inhibit the proper functioning of the system have different sources, and the monitoring frequenty is difficulty. the socio-patrimonial management of the resources must guard the integrity of the system, and it becomes essential to prevent occupation below the transmission lines. the radar images are viable alternative for the monitoring, being able to identify changes in the soil cover pattern without impediment from the clouds. In the scientific world these images have been better explored due to the costless and high frequency visits of the Sentinel-1. A scene dated year 2020 was chosen as default, spanning transmission line in the state of Ceara, Brazil and another scene, from 2021, was used to apply a change detection to check if the region remains unaltered or if there are patterns that correspond to new edifications. the application of change detection has shown to be feasible in the executed tests. Of the four spots of change, three of them have been confirmed. the process may be brought to its full potential with a larger number of scenes and samples with in loco verification. © 2022 ieee.

distribution network reconfiguration (dNR) has proved to be an economical and effective way to improve the reliability of distribution systems. As optimal network configuration depends on system operating states (e.g., loads at each node), existing analytical and population-based approaches need to repeat the entire analysis and computation to find the optimal network configuration with a change in system operating states. Contrary to this, if properly trained, deep reinforcement learning (dRL)-based dNR can determine optimal or nearoptimal configuration quickly even with changes in system states. In this paper, a deep Q Learning-based framework is proposed for the optimal dNR to improve reliability of the system. An optimization problem is formulated with an objective function that minimizes the average curtailed power. Constraints of the optimization problem are radial topology constraint and all nodes traversing constraint. the distribution network is modeled as a graph and the optimal network configuration is determined by searching for an optimal spanning tree. the optimal spanning tree is the spanning tree with the minimum value of the average curtailed power. the effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through several case studies on 33-node and 69node distribution test systems. © 2022 ieee.

the present design of protection systems is based on power flowing in a single direction, which allows for unpolarized (non-directional) protection schemes. With the large influx of renewable technologies recently introduced into the electric power system, referred to as distributed energy resources (dER), creates many challenges to adequately maintain existing protection schemes. Protection engineers design protection systems to safely eliminate faults from the electric power system that was exclusively built with rotating machines (which have quite a different behavior under fault than inverter-based sources). As the penetration level of dER increases, the adverse impacts from dER is no longer to be considered minimal. With dER becoming influential in the distribution system, the current utility protection strategy merits a comprehensive investigation. this paper discusses major protection issues caused by dERs and provides utility-verified solutions based on more than 500 dER interconnection project system impact studies. An optimized coordination flow chart is provided in this paper along with software CYMEdISt-verified real US utility radial distribution feeders, which were used for simulations and related validation. © 2022 ieee.

With the growing interest for a more advanced smart grid, there is an increasing need for more detailed and accurate distribution system models and assessments. this paper investigates the accuracy of today's distribution reactive power load modeling approaches and explores alternative load allocation processes to improve the spatial diversity of the reactive power load model. the performance of each methodology is assessed on a real utility feeder model ingested with real 15-minute resolution active and reactive power AMI data, providing a full-visibility base case for benchmarking purposes. this paper shows, among other things, that power-based load allocation or an allocation with improved power factor improves the reactive power load modeling by representing the real and reactive power at the feederhead (as compared to the current-based load allocation). © 2022 ieee.

Creating digital twin models for already existing substations is one of the big challenges for the transmission and distribution (t&d) electrical industry - to reach the goal of digitalization of the assets. the digital twin follows all changes and represents the physical twin in a digital model - can be used for simulating, analysis of data, understanding of problems, monitoring and simulation of real-world conditions. to get a digital twin with innovative methods and less effort, the Scan to twin principle is introduced, by creating - out of point clouds - a smart Building Information Modeling (BIM) model and digital twin with connections to other databases, as a real Virtual Reality (VR) substation simulation model. this paper describes the process of how to get the models, step by step, with a real use-case of an existing substation project of a transmission operator. the paper introduces a newly developed VR client solution connected to a BIM engineering solution to create - in a few clicks - VR models of existing substation BIM models.

transmission capacity shortfalls are a major bottleneck towards many efforts in electrification and renewable energy deployment. One relatively rapid and cost-effective solution to increase transmission capacity is to operate transmission lines as close to their thermal limits as possible, either via ambient-adjusted ratings (AAR) or dynamic line ratings (dLR). However, current AAR and dLR technologies must overcome several challenges to be adopted widespread. Motivated by the desire to reduce the financial and operational hurdles towards implementing AAR and dLR, a novel technique for thermally rating transmission lines using fiber-optic sensors was developed. this technique, known as FORM (FiberOptics for Rating and Measurement), meets the calculation requirements of the US rulemaking on AAR in FERC Order 881 and can also be used for dLR. FORM uses distributed temperature sensing (dtS) with the optical ground wire (OPGW) of the transmission network to spatially and temporally resolve a temperature measurement that reflects both the ambient temperature and solar heating. this measurement alone suffices for a reasonably accurate AAR or dLR implementation but specially designed fiber-optic anemometers (FOAs) can be installed on transmission towers and connected to the OPGW to improve the accuracy of FORM. the conductor temperature was calculated using FORM and was then compared with the same calculation using standard dLR models (CIGRÉ tB 601/ieee Std. 738) on a 380-kV line over a 12 -month period. © 2024 ieee.

the need to accurately measure high-frequency content in power system voltage and current phenomena is increasingly becoming more of a priority. As the amount of distributed energy resources (dER) and nonlinear loads penetrating the grid increases, so do challenges associated with traditional measurement and metering applications. In this paper, three commercially-available medium-voltage-level current sensors are characterized in terms of their harmonic amplitude and phase performance against reference signals that are 'played back' through the sensors through the use of an arbitrary waveform generator. It is shown that none of the three sensors studied are able to faithfully replicate all of the input signals completely, though there are advantages and disadvantages to each in terms of noise, resonance, and induced phase drift. Additionally, the Goodness-of-Fit metric, typically used for PMU model validation, is used to generate side-by-side comparisons of sensor accuracy over a small window around the events under study. © 2022 ieee.

Composite braced line post insulators are often the default choice for compact transmission lines. the working load capabilities of conventional braced line posts are restricted by the post insulator standard core diameters and traditional connection hardware. this paper presents the use of reinforced fitting hardware, larger post insulator core diameters and triangulated insulated cross-arms to increase the assembly working load capabilities for high strength applications.

Groundline integrity of aging direct embedded steel poles is the subject of this paper. Compromised direct embedded steel structures at the groundline are cause for thorough consideration regarding the potential for catastrophic structural failure and potentially the circuit. three elements are considered in this assessment approach: 1.) structure design and loading conditions per code;2.) structure condition-health;and 3.) structure capacity reduction. these elements represent a novel, holistic approach in assessing vulnerability and risk for embedded steel transmission structures, allowing for replacement prioritization, materials sourcing, labor allocation, and budget ***, the groundline assessment of embedded steel poles often relies on non-destructive testing to determine wall thickness degradation, then, percentage wall loss criteria are applied to determine structure replacement. Unfortunately, this specific replacement approach does not consider structural loading conditions, design parameters, environmental events, or conditions, nor the reduction of structure capacity due to wall *** paper focuses on the application of a comprehensive risk-based assessment solution for direct embedded transmission structures, addressing resiliency at the groundline. Groundline components are identified, and risk evaluation criteria and a ratings scale are then established. In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, carbon capture systems are being implemented in agriculture related industries across Iowa. this paper presents a recent distribution system impact study conducted for a rural electric cooperative to accommodate the pumping of methane gas collected from hog confinement sewage lagoons. the analysis of the distribution system considered conductor and equipment capacity, voltage drop, power quality and motor starting impacts and protective device evaluations. Upon implementation of the study recommendations the distribution system will be able to support the new loads and allow for the capture of methane previously dispersed into the atmosphere.
