this paper focuses on a noncoherent flat Rayleigh fading wireless communication system with a single transmitter antenna and N receiver antennas, i.e., a single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) system, in which the channel coefficients vary in every one time slot. For such a system, a fast noncoherent maximum likelihood (ML) detection algorithm and a corresponding closed form symbol error probability (SEP) formula are derived. In addition, the lower and upper bounds on SEP are established to quantitatively characterize how quickly SEP decays when N goes to infinity, with two important concepts, full receiver diversity gain and geometrical coding gain, being introduced, showing that any nonnegative pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation enables full receiver diversity for the massive SIMO system. Furthermore, we find that an optimal received constellation that maximizes the geometrical coding gain is the geometrical constellation. Comprehensive computer simulations validate our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that our proposed optimal constellation attains significant performance gains over the currently available constellation design for the same massive SIMO system.

the estimation of directions of arrival is formulated as the decomposition of a 3-way array into a sum of rank-one terms. However, a low-rank tensor approximation does not always exist. We propose an optimization technique based on differentiable angular constraints on the factors, ensuring the existence of the low-rank tensor decomposition. the efficiency of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via numerical simulations, and compared to Cramer-Rao bounds.

A signal processing algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival of a harmonic signal using only a single sensor is proposed. the method is based on the recently invented architecture called CAROUSEL, which makes use of the Doppler effect caused by observing signals using the sensor in a circular motion. the proposed method estimates the direction of arrival from the amount of phase shift of a harmonic component caused by the Doppler effect. Simulation using various harmonic signals including synthesised speech phonemes prove the proposed algorithm is able to accurately estimate the direction of arrival of the harmonic signals.

Several methods have been developed which allow the estimation of the location of an existing source with considerable accuracy in the absence of multipaths. However, if, in addition to the Line-of-Sight (LOS) path, non-LOS (NLOS) paths are also present, then all existing localisation algorithms dramatically fail to estimate the location of the source. In this paper, a passive array processing algorithm is proposed, which, if used prior to a localisation approach, suppresses all the multipath contributions in the received signal except for that of the LOS path. the performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through computer simulation studies.

A novel convex optimization problem formulation for source localization using partly calibrated arrays composed of subarrays with unknown displacements is introduced. the proposed formulation is based on sparse reconstruction using a mixed trace- and l(1)-norm minimization and exploits joint sparsity and special structure in the signal model. the new technique is applicable to subarrays of arbitrary topologies and allows the joint estimation of the directions of arrival (DoAs) and the array calibration. As shown by simulations, our new DoA estimation technique outperforms the state of the art method RARE, especially in low number of snapshot and low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

this paper deals with the issue of monitoring physical phenomena using wireless sensor networks. It provides principal component analysis for the time series of sensors' measurements. Without the need to compute the sample covariance matrix, we derive several in-network strategies to estimate the principal axis, including noncooperative and diffusion strategies. the performance of the proposed strategies is illustrated in the issue of monitoring gas diffusion.

One of the applications of advanced array signal processing is immersion ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT), where a solid test sample and an array of transducers are immersed in water, for the purpose of imaging the test sample. To do so, the knowledge of the shape of the upper surface of the test sample is needed. We model the interface between water and the solid as an incoherently spatially distributed reflector. We then develop a covariance fitting based approach to estimate the parameters of the shape of the upper surface of the test sample. With the knowledge of the estimated shape of this surface, we use the same approach to estimate the parameters of the shape of a crack inside the test sample. Numerical simulations are conducted to show the accuracy of the proposed approach.

A coprime array consists of two uniform linear subarrays that construct an effective difference co-array with certain desirable characteristics. In this paper, we propose a generalized coprime array concept through the compression of the interelement spacing of one constituting subarray. As such, the existing variations of coprime array and nested array structures are represented as special cases. the achievable unique lags as well as consecutive lags in the resulting virtual array are analytically expressed, and the direction-of-arrival estimation performance is examined using both the MUSIC algorithm and sparse signal reconstruction techniques.

the ESPRIT method is a classical method for one-dimensional harmonic retrieval. During the past two decades it has become apparent that several applications in signal processing correspond to the less studied Multidimensional Harmonic Retrieval (MHR) problem. In order to accommodate this demand, we propose an extension of ESPRIT to MHR based on the coupled canonical polyadic decomposition. this leads to a dedicated uniqueness condition and an algebraic framework for MHR.
