this paper considers the spark of L × N submatrices of the N × N Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) matrix. Here a matrix has spark m if every collection of its m - 1 columns are linearly independent. the motivation comes from such applications of compressed sensing as MRI and synthetic aperture radar, where device physics dictates the measurements to be Fourier samples of the signal. Consequently the observation matrix comprises certain rows of the DFT matrix. To recover an arbitrary k-sparse signal, the spark of the observation matrix must exceed 2k + 1. the technical question addressed in this paper is how to choose the rows of the DFT matrix so that its spark equals the maximum possible value L + 1. We expose certain coprimeness conditions that guarantee such a property.

Performing surgery on the beating heart has significant advantages for the patient compared to traditional heart surgery on the stopped heart. A remote-controlled robot can be used to automatically cancel out the movement of the beating heart. this necessitates precise tracking of the heart surface. For this purpose, we track 24 identical artificial markers placed on the heart. this creates a data association problem, because it is not known which measurement was obtained from which marker. To solve this problem, we apply a multiple target tracking method based on a symmetric kernel transformation. this method allows efficient handling of the data association problem even for a reasonably large number of targets. We demonstrate how to implement this method efficiently. the proposed approach is evaluated on in-vivo data of a real beating heart surgery performed on a porcine beating heart.

these last three decades, many second order (SO) and higher order (HO) high resolution (HR) direction finding (DF) methods, such as 2q-MUSIC (q ≥ 1), exploiting the information contained in the SO or HO circular (C) cumulants of the data, have been developed. However, for 2qth-order non-circular (NC) sources such as M-PSK sources with M ≤ 2q, strong gains in performance may be obtained by taking into account the information contained in both 2qth-order C and NC cumulants of the data, giving rise to NC 2qth-order DF methods. Numerous NC DF methods have been developed these last fifteen years but mainly at the SO and under restrictive assumptions on the sources. the purpose of this paper is to give new insights into NC 2q-MUSIC methods for 1 ≤ q ≤ 2 and for arbitrary NC sources.

Distributed signal processing algorithms suitable for their implementation over wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and ad hoc networks with communications and computing capabilities have become a hot topic during the past years. One class of algorithms that have received special attention are particles filters. However, most distributed versions of this type of methods involve various heuristic or simplifying approximations and, as a consequence, classical convergence theorems for standard particle filters do not hold for their distributed counterparts. In this paper, we look into a distributed particle filter scheme that has been proposed for implementation in both parallel computing systems and WSNs, and prove that, under certain stability assumptions regarding the physical system of interest, its asymptotic convergence is guaranteed. Moreover, we show that convergence is attained uniformly over time. this means that approximation errors can be kept bounded for an arbitrarily long period of time without having to progressively increase the computational effort.

In many Independent Component Analysis (ICA) problems the mixing matrix is nonnegative while the sources are unconstrained, giving rise to what we call hereafter the Semi-Nonnegative ICA (SN-ICA) problems. Exploiting the nonnegativity property can improve the ICA result. Besides, in some practical applications, the dimension of the observation space must be reduced. However, the classical dimension compression procedure, such as prewhitening, breaks the nonnegativity property of the compressed mixing matrix. In this paper, we introduce a new nonnegative compression method, which guarantees the nonnegativity of the compressed mixing matrix. Simulation results show its fast convergence property. An illustration of Blind Source Separation (BSS) of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) data confirms the validity of the proposed method.

A non-iterative two-stage precoding scheme for the multiple-input-multiple-output interference channel (IC) with a large number of transmit antennas is presented. Second stage precoders are used to compress the channel state information (CSI) of interfering links, while keeping the multiplexing gain of the IC constant. First stage precoders zero-force the interference based on the compressed CSI of interfering links. In addition, a proper design of the second stage precoders forces the first stage precoders to span a reduced subspace containing the maximal direct links' power, resulting in a better zero-forcing solution in terms of sum-rate. For a fixed number of receive antennas and transmitter/receiver pairs, the required feedback amount of interfering links is constant, regardless of the number of transmit antennas. As cooperative algorithms are very sensitive to CSI errors, the proposed scheme offers an attractive solution in case CSI feedback constitutes the system bottleneck.

Coprime sampling has been recently proposed to efficiently estimate the spectrum of wideband signals, using sampling rates which can be significantly lower than the Nyquist rate. While the method has been shown to work well when large number of samples are available for estimating the autocorrelation, the effect of fewer samples on the performance of coprime spectrum estimation has not been addressed so far. this paper addresses this issue by employing a denoising scheme on the spectral estimates, as a l 1 norm penalized quadratic program. the solution to this problem results in the so-called soft thresholding operator on the spectral estimates, which inherently promotes sparsity. It also helps to combat the effect of spurious peaks resulting from the finite sample averaging. the probabilities of detecting active and inactive bands are also explicitly characterized and they converge to unity by increasing the number (L) of sub Nyquist samples available to compute the estimates. the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical examples.

We propose a new class of nested vector-sensor arrays, via tensor modeling, which is capable of increasing the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, compared with the uniform linear array (ULA). By using one component's information of the interspectral tensor, the proposed nested vector-sensor array can provide O(N 2 ) DOFs with only N physical sensors. To utilize the increased DOFs, a novel spatial smoothing approach is proposed, which preserves the data structure and avoids reorganization via tensor modeling. Further, we propose corresponding direction of arrival (DOA) estimation strategies. Based on the analytical results, we consider two main applications: electromagnetic (EM) vector sensors and acoustic vector sensors. We show that the DOA estimation performance is greatly improved due to the combination of the nested-array strategy and tensor modeling. the effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified through numerical examples.

Cooperative sensor self-localization (CSL) in wireless networks usually requires the nodes to be equipped with specific ranging hardware including ultra-wideband or ultrasonic distance sensors. Such designs are not suitable for application in low-cost, low-power sensor networks. Here, we demonstrate how low-cost, low-power, asynchronous sensor nodes can be used to perform CSL (and, simultaneously, distributed synchronization) by means of time-stamped communication without additional ranging hardware. Our method combines a belief propagation message passing algorithm for cooperative simultaneous localization and synchronization (CoSLAS) with a MAC-layer time stamping *** validate the models underlying the CoSLAS algorithm by means of measurements, and we demonstrate that the localization accuracy achieved by our hardware implementation is far better than that corresponding to the time resolution and measurement errors of the hardware.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. the proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. this method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. this pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.
