We present an optimization method for automatic selection of downlink transmit power of LTE eNodeB based on the estimated throughput of the network. The procedures provide self optimized network functions to minimize the inter-cell interferences and maximizing the radio resource utilization. We propose a method based on the expected link throughput based on uniform client spatial distribution and compare our approach with solution based on SINR. We show simulation results that prove that the proposed method gives higher average link rate per client and higher total network throughput than optimization methods shown in the literature.

Literature about cloud computing often makes the assumption that the resource demands of computing clouds (and the virtual machines that constitute them) are unpredictable in the short term. There are, however, specific use cases where resource demands can be anticipated. This paper discusses dissertation work-in-progress which shows that, in certain predictable environments, preemptive virtual machine migration can improve both computational resource utilization and the overall user experience. A novel algorithm which reacts to anticipated future resource demands based on past behavior of virtual machines is presented. Simulations are used to quantify performance improvements.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. For that, this work proposes a new set of mapping rules to translate UML/-MARTE elements into VHDL constructs, allowing the generation of fully synthesizable descriptions, including the embedded system structure and behavior. The proposed mapping rules have been implemented in GenERTiCA tool, which is used in AMoDE-RT to generate source code from UML/MARTE models, enabling the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation. The proposed approach has been validated using a valve control system as case study. The obtained results show a decrease in FPGA used area, as well as a small impact on system performance. These results indicate the practicability of a full translation from UML elements into VHDL, opening room for specifying the system behavior using higher abstraction levels even for FPGA-based embedded system implementation.

Wireless visual sensor networks can provide significant information for a large set of monitoring and surveillance applications. In these networks, mobile sinks are often used to reduce energy consumption over the network, where many algorithms have been proposed for higher energy efficiency. Frequently, visual sensors may have different relevancies for the monitoring functions of the applications, according to their potential to provide significant data. Additionally, the relevancies of visual sensors may be quickly adjusted according to the occurrence of some critical event. In such cases, higher relevant source nodes may be concurrently transmitting visual information with higher quality or frequency, potentially increasing energy consumption in intermediate nodes from those sources toward the sink. We propose an autonomous balanced positioning algorithm for mobile sinks in order to shorten the transmission paths from higher relevant sources, directly benefiting multi-hop sensor networks with multiple active visual source nodes.

6LoWPAN being one among the enabling technologies of the vision, Internet of Things, brings forward the sensor networks into the world of Internet through the effective implementation of IPv6 on constrained devices. Even then, inorder to avail the numerous services provided by the sensor networks ubiquitously and with ease, there is a need to be cognizant of the available services, identity of nodes providing the desired services and the means to access. In this paper, we present an 6LoWPAN based architecture of sensor/actuator nodes, that employ Simple Service Location Protocol(SSLP), and respond to all service related queries from the user devices. The system implements Constrained Application Protocol(CoAP) a RESTful Architecture to leverage service access similar to HTTP transactions. The proposed architecture also integrates various protocols, defined specific to the constrained LoWPANs like, Neighbor Discovery(ND) Protocol, and Routing Protocol for Low power lossy networks(RPL) for interactions between traditional IP networks and the 6LoWPAN network.

The hierarchy of human knowledge is categorized at the levels of data, information, knowledge, and intelligence. For instance, given an AND-gate with 1,000-input pins, it may be described very much differently at various levels of perceptions in the knowledge hierarchy. At the data level on the bottom, it represents a 2 1,000 state space, known as `big data' in recent terms, which appears to be a big issue in engineering. However, at the information level, it just represents 1,000 bit information that is equivalent to the numbers of inputs. Further, at the knowledge level, it expresses only two rules that if all inputs are one, the output is one; and if any input is zero, the output is zero. Ultimately, at the intelligence level, it is simply an instance of the logical model of an AND-gate with arbitrary inputs. This problem reveals that human intelligence and wisdom are an extremely efficient and a fast convergent induction mechanism for knowledge and wisdom elicitation and abstraction where data are merely factual materials and arbitrary instances in the almost infinite state space of the real world. Although data and information processing have been relatively well studied, the nature, theories, and suitable mathematics underpinning knowledge and intelligence are yet to be systematically studied in cognitive informatics and cognitive computing. This will leads to a new era of human intelligence revolution following the industrial, computational, and information revolutions. The paper discusses the concept of value of integration in two apparently distant research domains, database and service domains. In the area of virtual database integration, we address the problem of increased utility in an organization resulting from adopting data integration architectures, so to be able to querying an integrated database schema instead a set of local schemas. In the area of service design, we investigate the increased utility resulting from the reuse enabled in a set of production lines from the integration of their local service repositories, that are conceptual representations of services along with is-a and part-of relationships expressed among them. We define a concept of utility and value in a general fashion, and subsequently adapt utility and value to the two analyzed domains. The paper is concluded with real life case studies.

With the availability of cloud computing infrastructures, migrating business-critical functionality to public clouds is becoming commonplace. Cloud providers typically offer a variety of computing capabilities and pricing options. Therefore, the problem of selecting the ones that suit enterprise needs becomes critical. Our major focus is on the migration of enterprise communication services, such as IP-telephony, to the cloud. We design a tool to assist in optimally deciding among the set of available hosting and network connectivity Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) under Quality-of-Experience (QoE) and budget constraints. In particular, we propose a multi-objective optimization framework making use of application-specific QoE estimation tools to tackle with the conflicting objectives of price and quality and demonstrate its application to a cloud-based teleconferencing service as a case study.

This research paper uses text visualisation methods, such as Wordclouds, to emphasis the key terms used by different political parties throughout the 2011 Irish Parliament (Dáil) period; this includes the final sessions of the 30th Dáil before the 2011 General Election and the entire 2011 sessions of the 31st Dáil. Using term frequencies this research clearly shows the topics that were important to each relevant political party. This study also highlights the key differences that may reside between what a political party stated clearly in their election manifesto and what was written on Dáil transcript records during the course of 2011. The main objective of this research is exploring and understanding ways in which key political information can be summarised and subsequently displayed in an intuitive visual fashion as a guiding education facility.
