Companies today interact in an increasingly competitive environment and seek to leverage the potentials of IT for generating new business models and for changing existing ones. For these business models, companies have to align the respective business and IT architectures. This task can be supported by using enterprise architecture management. In this paper, we first analyze the potentials for integrating enterprise architecture (management) and business model (management). Second, the components of different approaches for describing business models are compared to each other. Third, we present a concept for integrating business models into enterprise architectures. Fourth, we outline an integration of business model management and enterprise architecture management processes.

This paper compares two alternative feature data meta-representations using Intervals' Numbers (INs) in the context of the Minimum Distance Classifier (MDC) model. The first IN meta-representation employs one IN per feature vector, whereas the second IN meta-representation employs one IN per feature per class. Comparative classification experiments with the standard minimum distance classifier (MDC) on two benchmark classification problems, regarding face/facial expression recognition, demonstrate the superiority of the aforementioned second IN meta-representation. This superiority is attributed to an IN's capacity to represent discriminative, all-order data statistics in a population of features.

Mobile business is now becoming into reality with the ubiquitous Internet connectivity, the powerful of mobile devices and the vast amount of available cloud services. However, the characteristics of mobile environment such as mobility, unpredictability and variation of the signal-strength of mobile network bring great challenges for the selection of optimal services for orchestration. Traditional Qos-aware methods selecting services with the best QoS may not always result in a best orchestration as the constant mobility makes the performance of service invocation unpredictable and location-based. This work-in-progress paper presents the challenges of this problem and defines the problem in a formal way. This paper presents a systematic benchmarking comparison between optimal motion planners. Six planners representing the categories of sampling-based, grid-based, and trajectory optimization methods are compared on synthetic problems of varying dimensionality, number of homotopy classes, and width and length of narrow passages. Performance statistics are gathered on success and convergence rates, and performance variations with respect to geometric characteristics are analyzed. Based on this analysis, we recommend planners that are likely to perform well for certain problem classes, and make recommendations for future planning research.

The proliferation of Cloud computing has attracted a large variety of applications which are completely deployed on resources of Cloud providers. As data management is an essential part of these applications, Cloud providers have to deal with many different requirements for data management, depending on the characteristics and guarantees these applications are supposed to have. The objective of a Cloud provider is to support these diverse requirements with a basic set of customizable modules and protocols that can be (dynamically) combined. With the pay-as-you-go cost model of the Cloud, literally each user action and resource usage has a price tag attached to it. Thus, for the application providers, it is essential that the needs of their applications are provided in a cost-optimized manner. In this paper, we present the work in progress PolarDBMS, a flexible and dynamically adaptable system for managing data in the Cloud. PolarDBMS derives policies from application and service objectives. Based on these policies, it will automatically deploy the most efficient and cost-optimized set of modules and protocols and monitor their compliance. If necessary, the modules and/or their customization is changed dynamically at run-time. Several modules and protocols that have already been developed are presented. Additionally, we discuss the challenges that have to be met to fully implement PolarDBMS.

With increasing use of technology being applied to the management and delivery of radiation for cancer patients, it should be paralleled by use of technology in helping patients have a seamless and comfortable experience in radiation oncology clinics. Traditional clinic encounters have included significant paperwork that has to be entered by patients onto a hard copy and then reentered into computer systems by front office employees. With increasing introduction of technology into the front end, at the very least, redundancy in these tasks can be avoided. Tools such as iPads, tablet computing, and other hand held devices may offer an opportunity for patients to provide this information easily but at the same time learn about radiation therapy and aspects of their cancer management. With computational feedback, clinics can learn about how to help their patients better cope with their current conditions. Ultimately, radiation oncology clinics can offer a paradigm for other medical disciplines in “exploring ways to make cancer care more accessible and friendly to patients through mobile technology such as cell phones and tablets.”

In computing, informatics and other scientific disciplines, combinations of two or more systems have been shown to perform better than individual systems. Although combinations of multiple systems can be better than each individual system, it is not known when and how this is the case. In this paper, we focus on visual cognition systems. In particular, we conduct an experiment consisting of twenty trials, each focused on a pair of visual cognition systems. The data set is then analyzed using combinatorial fusion. Our results demonstrate that on average, combination of two visual cognition systems can perform better than individual systems only if the individual systems have high performance ratio and cognitive diversity. These results provide a necessary condition as to when two visual cognition systems should be combined to achieve better outcomes.

Today, Enterprises act in an increasingly interconnected world and in different kinds of collaborative networks. They are part of business ecosystems in which they interact with their customers, partners and competitors. The processes of analyzing and planning the intertwinement of business and IT architecture within enterprises has been successfully supported by enterprise architecture management (EAM) approaches. In this paper, we analyze four cases from different industries (health care, logistics, retail, and education) and argue that the intra-organizational concepts of enterprise architectures (EA) and EAM need to be extended to grasp the challenges of the enterprises' interconnectedness. Beyond the known concepts of extended enterprise architecture and federated architectures, we define five stages of extended architectures. Additionally, we describe challenges and existing solutions, which are relevant for this extended perspective.
