With robots becoming more prevalent, it is important to understand human attitudes toward robots not only when humans directly interact with the robots as most research examines, but when robots are performing nonsocial tasks (e.g., cleaning) within sight and hearing of humans. This study examined how presumed robot communication style in such situations of human-robot colocation affects human perceptions of a group of robots. Results suggest that communication style of robots did not affect perceptions of robots, but further studies should use different techniques to manipulate supposed communication style.

In recent years, large-scale wind power integration on electric system gradually becomes to be a major trend to the development of wind power industry. Thus, high precision wind speed and power prediction technology is urgently needed. Being different from traditional wind prediction models that largely rely on various numerical methods, this paper considers the dynamical essence features of atmospheric motion. A brand new Lorenz disturbance prediction model, which is based on wavelet neural networks (WNN), is proposed and called LSWNN short-term wind speed prediction model. Compared with the results of WNN model, LSWNN model is more accurate for the actual wind speed distribution forecasting. In this article, the research not only has important theoretical value on analyzing atmospheric nonlinear motion process, but also has profound engineering guidance in wind speed prediction and wind energy resource exploitation.

Energy efficiency of cloud data centers is of great concern today and has been tackled by many researchers. Dynamic VM placement is a well-known strategy to improve energy efficiency of a data center. Virtual machines (VMs) under light load are consolidated into a small number of physical machines (PMs) to turn idle PMs into low-power states. Although live migration is essential for dynamic VM placement, former studies have not yet revealed how energy overhead of live migration has impact on energy efficiency of dynamic VM placement. To tackle this problem, we conducted integrated simulation of energy overhead of live migration and dynamic VM placement sing Sim Grid. We used three dynamic VM placement policies and two live migration mechanisms (existing pre-copy and an accelerated mechanism invented by us) to thoroughly evaluate the energy overhead. The results showed that in the worst case energy overhead of live migration occupies 5.8% of total energy consumption of a data center.

Most social media analyses such as sentiment analysis for microblogs are often built as standalone, endpoint to endpoint applications. This makes the collaboration among distributed software and data service providers to create composite social analytic solutions difficult. This paper first proposes a system of systems service architecture (SoS-SA) design for social media analytics that support and facilitate efficient collaboration among distributed service providers. Then we propose a novel Twitters sentiment analysis service implemented on top of this design to illustrate its potentials. Current sentiment classification applications based on supervised learning methods relies too heavily on the chosen large training datasets, approaches using automatically generated training datasets also often result in the huge imbalance between the subjective classes and the objective classes in the sentiment of tweets, making it difficult to obtain good recall performance for the subjective ones. To address this issue, our proposed solution is based on a semi-supervised learning method for tweet sentiment classification. Experiments show that the performance of our method is better than those of the previous work.

In this poster, we introduce our developed wireless tag system called Smart Narrow Field Communication (SNFC). The purpose of SNFC is to provide a long url of the contents on the Internet easily like QR code and NFC (Near Field Communication). SNFC assumes a device name of wireless applications as a tag for recognizing a target content. The relationship between a device name and the url is managed on our cloud system. In addition to a device name, our system takes other user contexts such as gender and age into consideration for deciding the target content. The advantage of SNFC is that all the common devices such as WiFi router or Bluetooth mouse can be used as a tag.

An auction-based pricing mechanism has been presented to be applied for the problems that can be modeled as a variant of reserve price biddings on combinatorial auctions. In there, the combinatorial auction is extended to cover a multi-unit scenario, which allows placing bids for indistinguishable items to cover the case, for example, to assign an allocation of electricity power usage for services, considering electricity generation costs on the power suppliers. Although such a mechanism could be naively applied to various purposed such as dynamic electricity auctions, it was difficult to be applied for large-scale auction problems due to its computational intractability and theoretical limitations. In this paper, a preliminary analysis for an extended pricing mechanism is presented. The mechanism employs an approximate allocation and pricing algorithm that is capable to handle multi-unit auctions with reserve price biddings, guaranteeing the reserve price condition. The presented preliminary analysis shows the approach efficiently produces approximation allocations that are also necessary in its pricing process and it behaves as an approximation of VCG (Vickrey-Clarke-Groves) mechanism satisfying budget balance condition and bidders' individual rationality without having single-minded bidders assumption.

One of the key benefits of Cloud systems is their ability to provide elastic, on-demand (seemingly infinite) computing capability and performance for supporting service delivery. With the resource availability in single data centres proving to be limited, the option of obtaining extra-resources from a collection of Cloud providers has appeared as an efficacious solution. The ability to utilize resources from multiple Cloud providers is also often mentioned as a means to: (i) prevent vendor lock in, (ii) to enable in house capacity to be combined with an external Cloud provider, (iii) combine specialist capability from multiple Cloud vendors (especially when one vendor does not offer such capability or where such capability may come at a higher price). Such federation of Cloud systems can therefore overcome a limit in capacity and enable providers to dynamically increase the availability of resources to serve requests. We describe and evaluate the establishment of such a federation using a CometCloud based implementation, and consider a number of federation policies with associated scenarios and determine the impact of such policies on the overall status of our system. CometCloud provides an overlay that enables multiple types of Cloud systems (both public and private) to be federated through the use of specialist gateways. We describe how two physical sites, in the UK and the US, can be federated in a seamless way using this system.

This paper presents a lock-free cuckoo hashing algorithm, to the best of our knowledge this is the first lock-free cuckoo hashing in the literature. The algorithm allows mutating operations to operate concurrently with query ones and requires only single word compare-and-swap primitives. Query of items can operate concurrently with others mutating operations, thanks to the two-round query protocol enhanced with a logical clock technique. When an insertion triggers a sequence of key displacements, instead of locking the whole cuckoo path, our algorithm breaks down the chain of relocations into several single relocations which can be executed independently and concurrently with other operations. A fine tuned synchronization and a helping mechanism for relocation are designed. The mechanisms allow high concurrency and provide progress guarantees for the data structure's operations. Our experimental results show that our lock-free cuckoo hashing performs consistently better than two efficient lock-based hashing algorithms, the chained and the hopscotch hash-map, in different access pattern scenarios.

Charging of large-scale electric vehicles will have a significantimpact on the grid sothat their charging schedule needs tobe optimized. The traditional centralized scheduling method requires high performance in information exchange and computing. Based on the analysis of the features of electric vehicle charging load and the research of cloud computing, we propose a cloud computing based schedule platform for optimal charging of electric vehicles. In addition, the function and implementation of the three basic modules of the platform(the data collection module, the cloud computing center and the control center) are exposed. The platform performs well in optimal scheduling for electric vehicles. In addition, the platform can alsomake full use of the computing resource and reduce the communication congestion.

The rate at which biomedical literature is being published is quickly outpacing our ability to effectively leverage this information for evidence-based medicine. While papers are readily searchable through databases such as Pub Med, clinicians are often left with the time-consuming task of finding, assessing, interpreting, and applying this information. Tools that structure evidence from published papers using a standardized data model and provide an intuitive query interface for exploring documented biomedical entities would be valuable in utilizing this information as part of the clinical decision making process. This talk presents efforts towards developing computational tools and a representation for modeling and relating evidence from multiple clinical trial reports for lung cancer. Challenges related to representing this information in a machine-interpretable manner, assessing study quality, and handling conflicting evidence are described. I discuss the development of two tools: 1) an annotator tool used to extract information from papers, mapping it to concepts in an ontology-based representation and 2) a visualization that summarizes information about a single paper based on information captured in the model. Using lung cancer as a driving example, I demonstrate how these tools help users apply information reported in literature towards individually tailored medicine.
