In recent years, sediment scour near bridge piers and abutmentis a serious problem which cause nationwide concern because it has resulted in more bridge failures than other causes. After this question arose, more and more numerical analyses about this problem have been carried out. In this study,computational model simulations using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) model were conducted toexamine the mechanism of scour around one cylindrical pier, and then verified the scour results with the experiments carried out by D.L Liu from Dalian University of Technology. After that, the study about the local scour around side by side cylindrical piers and square shaped pier has been promoted. Subsequently, we studied the flow field, downwash motions, horseshoe vortices and vortex shading around the piers, and a detailed analyses of how these piers been damage and the equilibrium scour depth has been carried out.

A novel method is proposed in this paper tostore and retrieve images in entangled quantum systems, i.e., we employ a 2-qubit(or 3-qubit) entangled quantum state torepresent the colors of 3 pixels(or 5 pixels) of color or gray images, and design quantum circuits tostore images in entangled quantum systems, in addition, illustrate how toretrieve images stored in entangled quantum systems and analyze that the number of measurementis needed at most toretrieve a correct entangled quantum state. Simulation results on the Lena image shows compression ratiois 5.7 when PSNR is 32.8DB by Fourier transform while compression ratioof 2-qubit entangled coding(i.e., 2-qubit entangled quantum states representimage colors) is 12 without losing any information of the image. Due totake advantage of the superposition and entanglement properties of quantum states, our method improves the ability of image compression.

Virtual Reality(VR) presents a promising future in the field of rehabilitation due toits advantages brought tothe training process as is indicated in many articles and researches. In this paper, we describe a novel method in developing a virtual training environment for a 5 degrees of freedom(DOF) upper limb rehabilitation robot which has been designed tohelp provide assistance for patients whosurvive stroke but remain hemiplegic tocomplete rehabilitation exercise. The method involved utilizes ROS(Robot Operating System) and Gazebo(a multi-robot simulator) toset up an interesting virtual scene of daily life in a 3D world tofacilitate the patients tomove their affected arms with synchronous visual feedback and interact with the virtual training task. The control method of human model in the virtual world and the communication mechanism between the host machine which controls movement of the real robot and the master machine which runs the VR will be introduced. Finally, a virtual training environment containing reaching task setin a modern kitchen is presented.

Task allocation and scheduling in MAS systems utilized genetic algorithm is a focus for more and more computer scholars. Aiming at the low speed of typical genetic algorithm, the global convergence for traditional genetic algorithm, and the local convergence for simulated annealing algorithm, this paper proposes a new task allocation algorithm in multiple Agent systems with the advantages of both methods as inclusive based on the formal description for the task allocation. This paper describes the foundermental ideas and key steps of the proposed algorithm, which is validated by simulated experiment. The results demonstrate that the genetic algorithm based on simulated annealing has faster convergence speed and more optimal solution than a genetic algorithm or a simulated annealing algorithm.

A vessel segmentation algorithm for pathological retina images is proposed. Firstly, the vessel centerlines are extracted by using the divergence of the normalized gradient vector field. Secondly, the main vessels are segmented by a sequence of bot-hat operators with different scales and directions. Thirdly, the skeleton lines of main vessels are generated after a skeletonization procedure. The distances from each extracted vessel pixel tovessel centerline and toskeleton line are compared. The noisy pixels with larger distance tothe centerline than tothe skeleton are removed. Finally, a repair procedure is performed toregain the pixels at the positions of vascular intersections and bifurcations. Experimental evaluation on the publicly available DRIVE database and STARE database shows that the proposed algorithm shows a global performance improvement not only for pathological retinal images but alsofor healthy retinal images.

This article proposes twomodifications of a new unsupervised method of word segmentation consisting of three phases:Evaluation, Selection, and Adjustment(ESA), which was presented in our early paper. Lowest Relative Value(LRV) is the core algorithm in ESA. The whole method has only one parameter(the exponentin LRV) that can be approximately predicted by the empirical formulae. In this article, we further evaluate one of the empirical formulae on SIGHAN Bakeoff-3 dataset. And we correct the formula for the better prediction. Additionally, we modify another part of the LRV and demonstrate how the part alleviates the sparse data problem. Meanwhile, the results indicate that the modified ESA can produce better results than the original ESA and other methods.

Videoannotation plays an important role in content based videoretrieval. In this paper, we propose an automatic method tofind out person identity in live videofrom a fixed camera by making use of a novel contextual information, motion pattern. When subjects move around in the Field Of View(FOV)of a camera, motion measurements of human body are simultaneously captured by twodifferent sensing techniques, including camera and smart phones equipped with inertial sensors. Then classification models are trained torecognize motion pattern from raw motion data. Toidentify the subject that appeared in videofrom the camera, a metric of distance is defined toquantitatively measure the similarity between motion sequence recognized from videoand each of those from smart phones When a most similar sequence is detected, identity information related tothe corresponding phone is used toannotate videoframes, together with time and camera location. Totest the feasibility and performance of the proposed method, extensive experiments are conducted, which achieved impressive results.

The transmission rate of visible light communications(VLC) remains low as the low modulation bandwidth performance of light emitting diode(LED). This paper proposes a transmission system consisting of multiple LEDs and a photodiode(PD) toincrease the transmission rate. We combines the radiosuperposition coded modulation(SCM), interleave division multiple access(IDMA) technology with VLC. Tofit the driving voltage non-negative characteristics of LED and detect the mixed multi-LED lightintensity signals, the VLC multi-LED parallel transmission based on OOK modulation scheme is proposed, which has about K(K is the number LED wicks) times the transmission rate of the traditional ways. Finally, we analyze the number of iterations, the different specific interleaver and the driving voltages that are the factors influence the transmission performance. The simulation alsoverifies the high speed transmission capability and the anti-nonlinearity performance of the proposed scheme.

With a rapidly increasing amount of available data and studies proposing novel data analysis methods, researchers often neglect the importance of translational research in healthcare. In translational research, it is important to not only develop and evaluate a novel method, but also to make it useful for practical applications by letting the potential end-user to test it. This tutorial aims to demonstrate the best practices of building, evaluating and deploying predictive models in healthcare using a language and environment for statistical computing called R [1]. According to a recent poll [2] R (61%) is by far the most widely used language for data mining and analytics followed by Python (39%). Despite the popularity of R in core research environment, it is rarely found in production environment mostly due to lack of enterprise level graphical user interface support and historical orientation towards experimental work. However, most of the proposed predictive models presented in healthcare literature do not need a complex graphical interface and could be presented to the potential end-users via a simple web interface. This tutorial will present a framework for developing and deploying predictive models including data preparation, model selection, tuning and evaluation, followed by development of a simple web based graphical user interface to deploy predictive models from R. For all users with at least basic level of R knowledge, we will demonstrate that no additional knowledge is needed to create a simple one-page web application that will increase the impact of their research work by allowing them to publish their predictive models online. It has to be noted that it will be possible to follow the tutorial even if one has never used R. Participants of the tutorial will be able to download the source code of the presented framework and developed application to set up their own web-based predictive model visualizations.
