The service delivery model of cloud computing acts as a key enabler for big data analytics applications enhancing productivity, efficiency and reducing costs. The ever increasing flood of data generated from smart phones and sensors such as RFID readers, traffic cams etc require innovative provisioning and QoS monitoring approaches to continuously support big data analytics. To provide essential information for effective and efficient bid data analytics application QoS monitoring, in this paper we propose and develop CLAMS-Cross-Layer Multi-Cloud Application Monitoring-as-a-Service Framework. The proposed framework: (a) performs multi-cloud monitoring, and (b) addresses the issue of cross-layer monitoring of applications. We implement and demonstrate CLAMS functions on real-world multi-cloud platforms such as Amazon and Azure.

Mapping eye tracking data for moving targets on computer displays is a difficult task due to the characteristics of the moving targets and the limited capabilities of the eye tracking systems. We introduce 1) a design concept to map eye fixations to moving targets, and 2) an algorithm that generates "target-based" eye tracking data that determines eye fixation order and duration specific to the moving targets. The mapping reduces the number of areas of interest (AOIs) required for the analysis by trading off AOI size and accuracy in correspondence with the targets of interest. Our resulting methodology was applied to a case study with an air traffic controller conducting a conflict detection task with multiple moving aircraft on a simulated radar screen. Benchmarking results show that a limited reduction in accuracy when considering the larger AOIs and the number of fixations on the targets. The methodology shows promise for supporting the analysis of eye tracking data for tracking multiple moving targets.

In peer-to-peer networks, each node directly connects to other nodes without access points. This type of network system is useful for information sharing by using mobile devices (e.g., smart phones). On message delivery over the network, it is very difficult to assume the static routing if each node is assumed to move. In this paper, we suppose to use gossip-style epidemic message dissemination and show the performance evaluation of several gossip algorithms in terms of network topology. Specifically, we focus on the distribution of links in the network. Our results clarified the characteristics of those algorithms on the topologies that are biased the degree distribution locally.

Parallel performance for GPUs today surpasses the traditional multi-core CPUs. Currently, many researchers started totest several AI algorithms on GPUs instead of CPUs, especially after the release of libraries such as CUDA and Open CL that allows the implementation of general algorithms on the GPU. One of the most famous game tree search algorithms is Negamax, which tries tofind the optimal next move for zerosum games. In this research, an implementation of an enhanced parallel NegaM ax algorithm is presented, that runs on GPU using CUDA library. The enhanced algorithms use techniques such as nodivergence, dynamic parallelism and shared GPU table. The approach was tested in checkers and chess games. It was compared with previous studies, including threads on CPU for up to6x speedup for an 8 core processor and threads on GPU using iterative dependence and fixed grid and block size for up to40 x speedup at 14 depth. Furthermore, the approach was tested with different depths on the CPU and the GPU. The result shows speed up for parallel GPU up to80 x at 14 depth for checkers game and 90 x at 14 depth for chess game, which doubled the previous research results.

Communication Board (CB) is an Assistive Technology (AT) that enables people who have speech impairment to communicate their needs or desires using visual-graphic symbols. Since each patient has individual needs, it is important to offer a customizable approach to define the vocabulary of their CB. In this context, this paper proposes a modeling language for diagramming the CB vocabulary. Its feasibility, expressiveness and usefulness were validated through the construction of a software that will be described later in this paper.

Nowadays, teachers and students continue to face the problem to find high quality learning objects for learning and teaching. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach, which considers Item Response Theory (IRT) for recommending to students or teachers Learning Objects (LOs) of high quality in the context of the Learning Objects Economy, which is a marketplace for sharing and reuse of LOs. Recommendations provide to teachers or students the needed support for finding high quality learning objects taking advantage of the previous quality evaluations carry out by peers. An evaluation of our approach was carried out in a real scenario which allowed us to verify the applicability of the process for generating good recommendations.

Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) with HEp-2 cells is considered as a powerful, sensitive and comprehensive technique for analyzing antinuclear autoantibodies (ANAs). Fractal dimension can be used on the analysis of image representing and also on the property quantification like texture complexity and spatial occupation. In this study, we apply the fractal theory in the application of HEp-2 cell staining pattern classification, utilizing fractal descriptor firstly in the HEp-2 cell pattern classification with the help of morphological descriptor and pixel difference descriptor. The method is applied to the data set of MIVIA and uses the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Experimental results show that the fractal descriptor combining with other two descriptors makes the precisions of six patterns more stable, all above 50%, achieving 62.04% overall accuracy at best with relatively simple feature vectors.

This video presents our preliminary work towards addressing the ladder climbing event in DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) using DRC-Hubo robot. A ladder-climbing motion planner is developed which generates a collision-free, stable quasi-static trajectory for execution. Compliance control is enabled on arm joints to compensate for the calibration error, modeling error and control error. We have demonstrated that DRC-Hubo can robustly climb a variety of ladders in simulation and successfully climb a ship ladder on the hardware.

This paper presents a probabilistic technique for identifying support surfaces like floors, walls, stairs, and rails from unstructured 3D point cloud scans. A Markov random field is employed to model the joint probability of point labels, which can take on a number of user-defined surface classes. The probability of a point depends on both local spatial features of the point cloud around the point as well as the classifications of points in its neighborhood. The training step estimates joint and pairwise potentials from labeled point cloud datasets, and the prediction step aims to maximize the joint probability of all labels using a hill-climbing procedure. The method is applied to stair and ladder detection from noisy and partial scans using three types of sensors: a sweeping laser sensor, time-offlight depth camera, and a Kinect depth camera. The resulting classifier achieves approximately 75% accuracy and is robust to variations in point density.

Denoising is an essential application to improve image quality, especially in medical imaging. This paper introduces an example and patch-based learning method for reducing Gaussian noise and Poisson noise which often appear in medical imaging modalities using ionizing radiation. In the proposed method, denoising is performed by learning the regression model based on a set of the nearest neighbors of a given noisy patch, with the help of a given set of standard images. The method is evaluated and compared to several state-of-the-art denoising methods. The obtained results confirm its efficiency, especially for heavy noise.
