Distributed storage systems (DSS) are becoming even more important and complex due to the emergence of paradigms such as cloud computing, and the challenges for dealing with big data. DSS provide a set of services such as publishing, file sharing and high performance utility storage. In addition, there is a growing demand to support these services with high scalability, availability and low cost. Sheepdog is a distributed storage system which aims at providing storage volumes with high availability, using clusters of common machines. This type of storage system may prove useful in the VMS (Video Monitoring Service) market and as remote storage for cloud-based applications. This paper analyzes the scalability of Sheepdog clusters, by measuring the performance with different number of nodes and different replication degrees. The system analyzed here showed better performance for read operations in small cluster sizes than in larger ones. On the other hand, proper scalability was found for the write throughput, since no significant performance degradation was noticed when the number of cluster nodes increased.

Arterial blood pressure (ABP) is an important vital sign of the cardiovascular system. As with other physiological signals, its measurement can be corrupted by different sources of noise, interference, and artifact. Here, we present an algorithm for the quantification of signal quality and for the reconstruction of the ABP waveform in noise-corrupted segments of the measurement. The algorithm quantifies the quality of the ABP signal on a beat-by-beat basis by computing the normalized mean of successive differences of the ABP amplitude over each beat. In segments of poor signal quality, the ABP wavelets are then reconstructed on the basis of the expected cycle duration and envelope information derived from neighboring ABP wavelet segments. The algorithm was tested on two datasets of ABP waveform signals containing both invasive radial artery ABP and noninvasive ABP waveforms. Our results show that the approach is efficient in identifying the noisy segments (accuracy, sensitivity and specificity over 95%) and reliable in reconstructing beats that were artificially corrupted.

In systems that support dynamic allocation of work across human and autonomous agents, mechanisms for the delegation of authority are required. A case study inspired by the Uberlingen mid-air collision is presented demonstrating an instantiation of a delegation assignment and coordination model. The scenario includes multiple delegation assignments issued from two sets of delegating agents to the same set of adopting agents. For one aircraft, two delegation assignments are made: a clearance from an air traffic controller and an opposing resolution from flightdeck traffic collision alerting automation. For the other aircraft, one delegation assignment is made (a resolution from flightdeck traffic collision alerting automation that is coordinated with the other traffic's automation and that makes the effect of the air traffic control clearance hazardous). The example demonstrates how the agents involved in Uberlingen assigned and accepted multiple, coupled delegations and highlights issues arising from available information and the timing of assignments that may interfere with adherence to coordination procedures. This example indicates the need to extend methods for modeling of delegation assignment and coordination in order to inform the design of autonomous agents, associated procedures, and decision support.

Due to increasing hardware capacity, computing grids have been handling and processing more data. This has led to higher amount of energy being consumed by grids, hence the necessity for strategies to reduce their energy consumption. Scheduling is a process carried out to define in which node tasks will be executed in the grid. This process can significantly impact the global system performance, including energy consumption. This paper focuses on a scheduling model for opportunistic grids that considers network traffic, distance between input files and execution node as well as the execution node status. The model was tested in a simulated environment created using Green Cloud. The simulation results of this model compared to a usual approach show a total power consumption savings of 7.10%.

In a collaborative robot development, the robot is required to understand both the content of the work operation, and the current condition of the working environment and the progress of the human, in order to provide exact assistance in the correct timing. This work aims to integrate together both robot knowledge in work operation and embodied multimodal interaction for collaborative robot development. A task modeling approach is proposed to build a hierarchical task model of the entire work operation and grounding with the actual condition (“state”) of the objects and environment, and the action (“transition”) of work in the embodied dimension. The system is implemented in a simulation environment with human interaction in both structured (collaborative cooking task) and unstructured (clean up task) operations.

Temperature strongly affects the operation of integrated circuits, and its impact has been largely investigated on a device level. However, the impact of temperature variations on networks of multiple devices is far less understood and requires investigation. We aim to close this gap and analyse the impact of temperature fluctuations on low-power wireless sensor networks, a key enabling technology of pervasive computing. As we are moving forward into an era of human-centric safety-critical applications (e.g., smart health and intelligent transportation systems), it is particularly important to make sure that a networked system offers a reliable and deterministic performance despite all possible temperature changes over its deployment lifetime. In this demo, we present a testbed infrastructure based on infra-red heating lamps that allows to vary the on-board temperature of sensor nodes on a large scale in a repeatable fashion. Using this experimental infrastructure, we show the effects of temperature variations on network performance in two different ways. First, in a small-scale local testbed at PerCom, we highlight the degradation of the wireless link quality at high temperatures, and show that the performance of radio transceivers is temperature-dependent. We quantify this degradation and parametrize the dependency between temperature and link quality using the signal strength information captured between four wireless sensor nodes. Second, we connect remotely to our large-scale experimental infrastructure at TU Graz, and assess the impact of temperature variations on the performance of state-of-the-art network protocols, showing that the typical outdoor temperature fluctuations occurring during 24-hours do affect key network metrics such as throughput, delay, and lifetime.

That safety cases are gaining prominence in safety regimes and regulations is a claim that, nowadays, may go more or less unchallenged. In brief, a safety case intends to make an explicit and compelling case that a system under consideration is safe for its intended use. When understood in this sense, the notion of a safety argument becomes one of the key elements of a properly formulated safety case. Herein, in what may be seen as work in progress, we comment on some preliminary thoughts regarding the challenges one must face in order to provide an adequate and sensible definition of what would count as being a safety argument. We contend that, without such a definition, the assessment of a safety argument is well-nigh impossible.

An IT infrastructure comprises both hardware and software resources. While much progress has been made on automating the provisioning of software resources, provisioning hardware resources continues to use labor-intensive manual processes. For example, hardware provisioning tasks including most of the peripheral tasks, such as designing the system architecture, planning the tasks to deploy on it, describing the operational procedures, and managing the progress of hardware deployment, remain a manual process despite being amenable to automation. To address these problems, this paper presents a model-based approach to automating hardware provisioning. First, we describe a specification to define a hardware system in the form of a desired state model. Second, we propose a scheme to generate operational procedures to deploy the system detailing how we handle dependencies and address issues of practical importance useful to improve worker productivity. Third, through a case study involving hardware provisioning for a private cloud platform, we show the benefits accrued through our scheme, which not only addresses the issues with peripheral administrative tasks but also the practical operations by supporting improved operational procedures. Our system is implemented in Java. We qualitatively evaluate our solution alluding to how reusability can be enhanced, and also elicit its current limitations providing insights into ongoing work to address these limitations.

As computing becomes ubiquitous, researchers and engineers aim to exploit the potential of the pervasive systems in order to introduce new types of services and address inveterate and emerging problems. This process will, eventually, lead us to the era of urban computing and the Internet of Things; the ultimate goal being to improve our quality of life. But these concepts typically require direct and constant interaction of computing systems with the physical world in order to be realized, which inevitably leads to the introduction of a range of safety and privacy issues that must be addressed. One such important aspect is the fine-grained control of access to the resources of these pervasive embedded systems, in a secure and scalable manner. This paper presents an implementation of such a secure policy-based access control scheme, focusing on the use of well-established, standardized technologies and considering the potential resource-constraints of the target heterogeneous embedded devices. The proposed framework adopts a DPWS-compliant approach for smart devices and introduces XACML-based access control mechanisms. The proof-of-concept implementation is presented in detail, along with a performance evaluation on typical embedded platforms.

This paper compares two methods for rotor flux estimation of sensorless vector controlled squirrel-cage induction machine used in wind power applications. The compared methods are based on the integration of stator back electromotive force (back-emf) which is obtained from the machine parameters and measured voltages and currents. Rotor flux estimation based on the integration of back-emf leads to an estimation error due to dc drift and initial value problems associated with pure integrators. In order to overcome these problems, two methods for rotor flux estimation are compared in this paper. In first method the pure integrator is replaced by a low-pass filter (LPF), whereas the second method has a quadrature detector to detect the orthogonality between the estimated flux and back-emf and a PI controller to generate an appropriate compensation feedback level. Both methods are implemented into digital control system and verified on the laboratory model. The experimental setup consists of a squirrel cage induction generator connected to the grid via back-to-back-converter and the permanent magnet motor driven by industrial frequency converter and used as a wind turbine emulator. Experimental tests carried out on the induction generator connected to the grid demonstrate advantages and disadvantages of both methods.
