After a network node or a link fails, an unpredictable period of time ensues during which the network communication is disturbed. This period encompasses the time necessary for the network to reconverge on new shortest paths. This process may last from a few miliseconds up to tens of seconds. The time heavily depends on the physical topology and the routing protocol used. During the failure and reconvergence period, the network is experiencing serious connectivity issues in which different destinations may become unreachable causing other difficulties, e.g. with critical and sensitive services. Addressing these issues, IP Fast ReRoute (IP FRR) mechanisms have been developed. The main goal of IPFRR mechanisms is to minimize network recovery time by computing repair paths for possible node or link failures before they happen. Several IPFR mechanisms exist, ranging from selecting loop-free alternatives to other ones using tunneling mechanisms. In this paper we are proposing a new multicast based mechanism for IPFRR recovery in an IPv6 network. Our proposed mechanism uses a modified algorithm of the Reverse Path Forwarding (RPF) control used by Protocol Independent Multicast - Dense Mode (PIM-DM) multicast routing.

One of the main promises of the cloud computing paradigm is the ability to scale resources on-demand. This feature characterizes the cloud era, where the overhead of early expenditure for infrastructure is eliminated. Innovative services are thus able to enter the market quicker and adopt faster to new challenges and user demand. One of the main aspects of this on-demand nature is the concept of elasticity, i.e., the ability of autonomously provision and de-provision resources by reacting to changes in the incoming load. An elastic service is able to operate with an optimal cost by expanding and contracting its used resources at runtime and according to demand. This does not only minimizes running cost, but also avoids disruptive outages due to spikes in service usage. While the various layers comprising a cloud service can be scaled, this does not happen in a unified manner. The vision of CELAR is to provide a fully integrated software stack that manages resource allocation for cloud applications in an autonomous, efficient and generic manner. In order to achieve that, CELAR incorporates novel methodologies for describing cloud applications, monitoring the use of various resources, evaluating cost, taking informed decisions and interacting with the underlying cloud infrastructure. Our goal is two-fold. On the one hand is developing the methodologies for achieving multi-grained, automatic elasticity control on both application and infrastructure level. On the other hand is developing the open-source tools that implement those methods in an integrated manner. Hereby we present an overview of the CELAR platform, explaining its architectural components and some basic workflows that show how they interact in order to achieve the core functionalities.

The current pay-per-use model adopted by public cloud service providers has influenced the perception on how a cloud should provide its resources to end-users, i.e. on-demand and access to an unlimited amount of resources. However, not all clouds are equal. While such provisioning models work for well-endowed public clouds, they may not always work well in private clouds with limited budget and resources such as research and education clouds. Private clouds also stand to be impacted greatly by issues such as user resource hogging and the misuse of resources for nefarious activities. These problems are usually caused by challenges such as (1) limited physical servers/ budget, (2) growing number of users and (3) the inability to gracefully and automatically relinquish resources from inactive users. Currently, cloud resource management frameworks used for private cloud setups, such as OpenStack and CloudStack, only uses the pay-per-use model as the basis when provisioning resources to users. In this paper, we propose OpenStack Café, a novel methodology adopting the concepts of 'time' and booking systems' to manage resources of private clouds. By allowing users to book resources over specific time-slots, our proposed solution can efficiently and automatically help administrators manage users' access to resource, addressing the issue of resource hogging and gracefully relinquish resources back to the pool in resource-constrained private cloud setups. Work is currently in progress to adopt Café into OpenStack as a feature, and results of our prototype show promises. We also present some insights to lessons learnt during the design and implementation of our proposed methodology in this paper.

This paper addresses the problem of “deep matching” - or matching different classes of entities based on latent underlying semantics, rather than just their visible attributes. An example of this is the “automatic task assignment” problem where several tasks have to be assigned to people with varied skill-sets and experiences. Datasets showing types of entities (tasks and people) along with their involvement of other concepts, are used as the basis for deep matching. This paper describes a work in progress, of a deep matching application called SortingHat. We analyze issue tracking data of a large corporation containing task descriptions and assignments to people that were computed manually. We identify several entities and concepts from the dataset and build a co-occurrence graph as the basic data structure for computing deep matches. We then propose a set of query primitives that can establish several forms of semantic matching across different classes of entities.

Today's crowdsourcing systems are predominantly used for processing independent tasks with simplistic coordination. As such, they offer limited support for handling complex, intellectually and organizationally challenging labour types, such as software development. In order to support crowdsourcing of the software development processes, the system needs to enact coordination mechanisms which integrate human creativity with machine support. While workflows can be used to handle highly-structured and predictable labour processes, they are less suitable for software development methodologies where unpredictability is an unavoidable part the process. This is especially true in phases of requirement elicitation and feature development, when both the client and development communities change with time. In this paper we present models and techniques for coordination of human workers in crowdsourced software development environments. The techniques augment the existing Social Compute Unit (SCU) concept-a general framework for management of ad-hoc human worker teams-with versatile coordination protocols expressed in the Lightweight Social Calculus (LSC). This approach allows us to combine coordination and quality constraints with dynamic assessments of software-user's desires, while dynamically choosing appropriate software development coordination models.

Botnets continue to threaten the security landscape of computer networks worldwide. This is due in part to the time lag present between discovery of botnet traffic and identification of actionable intelligence derived from the traffic analysis. In this article we present a novel method to fill such a gap by segmenting botnet traffic into communities and identifying the category of each community member. This information can be used to identify attack members (bot nodes), command and control members (Command and Control nodes), botnet controller members (botmaster nodes), and victim members (victim nodes). All of which can be used immediately in forensics or in defense of future attacks. The true novelty of our approach is the segmentation of the malicious network data into relational communities and not just spatially based clusters. The relational nature of the communities allows us to discover the community roles without a deep analysis of the entire network. We discuss the feasibility and practicality of our method through experiments with real-world botnet traffic. Our experimental results show a high detection rate with a low false positive rate, which gives encouragement that our approach can be a valuable addition to a defense in depth strategy.

With the spread of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems and cloud services, various kinds of data are available through Web services. A context-aware service recognizes a real-world context from such data and behaves autonomously based on the context. However, it has been challenging to manage contexts and services defined on the heterogeneous and distributed Web services. In this paper, we propose a framework, called RuCAS, which systematically creates and manages context-aware service using various Web services (e.g. information services, sensor services, networked appliances, etc.). The framework describes every context-aware service by an ECA (Event-Condition-Action) rule. For this, an event is a context triggering the service, a condition is a set of contexts to be satisfied for execution, and the action is a set of Web services to be executed by the service. Thus, every context-aware service is simply managed in a uniform manner. Since the RuCAS is published as a Web service, it is easy for various applications to reuse and integrate created contexts and services. As a case study, RuCAS is applied to creating context-aware services in a real home network system.

With the introduction of the Personally Controlled Health Record (PCEHR), the Australian public is being asked to accept greater responsibility for their healthcare. Although well designed, constructed and intentioned, policy and privacy concerns have resulted in an eHealth model that may impact future health information sharing requirements. Thus an opportunity to transform the beleaguered Australian PCEHR into a sustainable on-demand technology consumption model for patient safety must be explored further. Moreover, the current clerical focus of healthcare practitioners must be renegotiated to establish a shared knowledge creation landscape of action for safer patient interventions. To achieve this potential however requires a platform that will facilitate efficient and trusted unification of all health information available in real-time across the continuum of care. As a conceptual paper, the goal of the authors is to deliver insights into the antecedents of usage influencing superior patient outcomes within an eHealth-as-a-Service framework. To achieve this, the paper attempts to distil key concepts and identify common themes drawn from a preliminary literature review of eHealth and cloud computing concepts, specifically cloud service orchestration to establish a conceptual framework and a research agenda. Initial findings support the authors' view that an eHealth-as-a-Service (eHaaS) construct will serve as a disruptive paradigm shift in the aggregation and transformation of health information for use as real-world knowledge in patient care scenarios. Moreover, the strategic value of extending the community Health Record Bank (HRB) model lies in the ability to automatically draw on a multitude of relevant data repositories and sources to create a single source of practice based evidence and to engage market forces to create financial sustainability.

Both cloud computing and desktop virtualization are based on massive virtual machines (VMs). Due to the conventional template-based creation and the limited bandwidth of disk I/O, booting up massive VMs is time consuming and lacks flexibility as well. However, current solutions put their focus on the design of the distributed storage for massive VMs' images. Considering all VMs' images should be read into the memory for booting up, the limited local disks' I/O bandwidth is actually the big challenge. To tackle this challenge, in this paper, we propose a scheme based on the minimum dataset (for booting up an operating system), which is shared by all the VMs created from different images. It can not only accelerate the boot-up progress of massive VMs via sparing I/O overhead, but also support the independent VM as well as the closed-source OS such as Windows. To demonstrate its efficiency, we also implement and deploy the system, namely Fast VM, on the Xen platform for Windows virtual machines with two types of VM formats, VHD and QCOW2. Experimental results show that our approach can significantly reduce the I/O overhead and even spare the booting up time up to 64.8%.
