One emerging and challenging issue in Smarter Cities is Mobility. In order to gather mobility data for relevant analyses, two solutions are widely discussed, namely the conventional standardized infrastructure sensors and the novel social sensing solution. However infrastructure sensors solution is too costly, that is unfeasible for every city. On the contrast, social sensing is a renewal approach, by which people perform "sensory data" collection tasks. In order to widely conduct the second solution and meet various needs of cities, it requires the ability to 1) support various social data sources, 2) be scalable, customizable and configurable, and 3) use cost-efficient IT resources. However current research cannot overcome these challenges. Therefore, this paper presents a social sensing data analysis framework in cloud for smarter cities, especially to support smart mobility. As a case study, Mobility Analyzer, a subsystem of IRMA (Integrated Real-time Mobility Assistant, that is a pilot project of Pavia, Italy), is implemented.

DNA sequencing technology generates millions of patterns on Every run of the machine and it poses a challenge for matching these patterns to the reference genome effectively with high execution speed. The main idea here is inexact matching of patterns with mismatches and gaps (insertions and deletions). In Inexact match up pattern DNA sequence is to be matched with some allowed number of errors. Here we have considered 2 errors. Errors can be mismatches or gaps. Existing algorithm as SOAP3 performs inexact matching on GPU with mismatches only. SOAP3 doesn't consider gaps (insertion and deletion). General Purpose Graphical Processing Unit (GPGPU) is an effective solution in terms of the cost and speed and there by providing a high degree of parallelism. This paper presents a parallel implementation of multiple pattern inexact matching in genome reference using CUDA based on BWT. The algorithm incorporates DFS (Depth First Search) Strategy for For matching multiple patterns, each thread of GPGPU is provided with a different pattern and hence millions of patterns can be matched using only one CUDA kernel. Since the memory of the GPU is limited then memory management should handled carefully. Synchronization of multiple threads is provided in order to prevent illegal access to the shared memory. GPU results are compared with that of CPU execution Experimental results of the proposed methodology achieved an average speedup factor of seven as compared to that of CPU execution.

This paper proposes a content based mode in camera based applications and image viewers, where the system recognizes the type of content in the image and automatically links it to other applications. When the device is in content mode, all the images viewed or accessed have an extra context based menu based on the detected data (such as call number and email). The user can switch between the normal mode and this content mode, while using the device, by performing a simple gesture. This mode can also be plugged in to any number of services available on the device. Such a feature would make it much easier for users to perform useful actions directly from the image, saving several intermediate steps. We provide methods for the user to manipulate and share the content accessed through the camera, including browsing the links, saving a new contact, and so on. We review existing applications where parts of this feature have been implemented, especially in calling cards. Then we describe the system architecture and algorithm for implementing the content mode generally in all applications on the device, as well as APIs useful for third party application developers. We also provide sample user interfaces where this mode can used.

Opportunistic networks are formed by small devices that communicate over a wireless link with each other. Opportunistic network possess various heterogeneous resources. Resource management and scheduling of these heterogeneous resources are major problems in the Opportunistic network due to highly dynamic behavior of the devices in the opportunistic network. Especially challenging is the multisuser aspect in the opportunistic network environment, since with a high and changeable number of users the workload is difficult to predict, and so making a proper scheduling of tasks becomes a serious problem. The overheads imposed by the waiting queues may become a major part of the total execution time. So to efficiently manage the resources in the opportunistic network, a Grid environment is considered to address the problem of fair sharing. An auction model which is an economic based technique has also been considered in the Grid environment. In the proposed work, a second price auction mechanism is considered to employ a pricing mechanism that is incentive compatible. Incentive compatible pricing mechanisms ensure that the users' self-interests are maximized when they honestly reveal their preferences to the allocation mechanism. These mechanisms can provide powerful guarantees about optimal user behavior and can deliver highly efficient allocations. So in the proposed work, a second price auction mechanism is considered which is very efficient and also it elicits honest information from the participants thereby successfully managing the resource allocation in the Grid environment. A Gossip based mechanism is also considered in the proposed work in order to reduce the overheads caused by the waiting queues.

Many industries nowadays use management and decision making based on artificial neural networks. However, the major drawback of neural networks lies in their time and computational complexity. The problem with computational complexity could be eliminated using sharing of the computing needs on multiple computing nodes. This article focuses on the architectural design of a distributed system, which aims to solve large neural networks. The article describes the technology GPGPU and the next part of the article deals with an overview of methods for speeding up the calculation and distribution of artificial neural network. The main section describes the design of a model architecture description of the algorithm that allows correct data distribution on computational nodes. © 2014 ieee.

A concussion is a poorly understood mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that alters the way the brain functions. Clinical practice guidelines suggest different algorithms that should be followed to evaluate TBI patients [ 11]. At different steps, the clinical guidelines ask for physical, cognitive, behavioral, imaging, and neuropsychological evaluations which result in dozens of measures that should be analyzed to better establish an understanding of the patient's condition. The complexity, multimodal, and subjective properties of many of these data combined with the overlapping symptoms of comorbid issues raise many challenges for physicians who must integrate these disparate measurements to develop a comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and for researchers trying to understand the effects of concussions. The complexity of determining the long-term effects of concussions as well as the data challenges faced by clinicians when trying to diagnose mTBI shows that research on the effects of concussion is a big data problem that only when large, comprehensive, and standardized clinical information are analyzed simultaneously, is when new knowledge can be obtained. This paper presents a large-scale informatics database that has been designed to enable research in the understanding of the effects of concussions. The database consists of millions of longitudinal clinical data points ranging from encounters, type of encounters, clinical notes, diagnosis codes, imaging findings, and other clinical information.

Cloud computing is a technology which computes the resources and delivered as a service over a network in virtual form. Cloud computing is a bigger and broad concept which allows people to access the services through the use of internet from various devices. It has rapidly gained the popularity and captures the IT industries, colleges and institutes in recent years. Due to its advanced service benefits, numbers of users are increasing day-by-day. Hence, the need of task scheduling in cloud is increasing. Task scheduling is done to allocate the tasks onto the resources effectively and efficiently. A number of scheduling algorithms have been developed till now. A good scheduling strategy has the capability to adapt to changing environment and type of tasks. In this paper, we proposed a meta-heuristic scheduling algorithm i.e. improved honey bees life scheduling algorithm for a public a cloud (IHBSLA). The new scheduling algorithm is simulated using Cloudsim toolkit. Experimental results showed that our proposed algorithm performs 50% better than honey bees life scheduling algorithm (HBLSA) in terms of cost.

Trust has been a hotspot for adopting cloud computing. This paper proposes a hybrid model to build, evaluate and expose trust. It uses different techniques like sliding window technique to reach optimum processes for trust value delivery. Trust value is evaluated through integrated mechanisms from literature. Moreover, measuring trust included evaluating SLA violations side to side with consumer customized measures for validating trust. We also added caching module to ensure optimization of querying trusted services. Moreover, we added a module for service registry and novel personalized modules for tracking both cloud providers and cloud consumers behaviors. Furthermore, we present a comparison between recent literature research trust models and our model. It discusses trust criteria for building and evaluating trust. Also, we substitute different techniques against known security attacks. Finally, we provide a simulation for evaluating proposed techniques for building trust.

Distributed applications running on a large cluster environment, such as the cloud instances will have shorter execution time. However, the application might suffer from sudden termination due to unpredicted computing node failures, thus loosing the whole computation. Checkpoint/restart is a fault tolerance technique used to solve this problem. In this work we evaluated the performance of two of the most commonly used checkpoint/restart techniques (Distributed Multithreaded Checkpointing (DMTCP) and Berkeley Lab Checkpoint/Restart library (BLCR) integrated into the OpenMPI framework). We aimed to test their validity and evaluate their performance in both local and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) environments. The experiments were conducted on Amazon EC2 as a well-known proprietary cloud computing service provider. Results obtained were reported and compared to evaluate checkpoint and restart time values, data scalability and compute processes scalability. The findings proved that DMTCP performs better than BLCR for checkpoint and restart speed, data scalability and compute processes scalability experiments.

Massively parallel computers have found significant interest from researchers in recent years. These machines have been used for complex and sophisticated simulations, such as, the brain functions simulation. Due to the increase in the power demand by massively parallel computers and it's move into the exascale computing in future, temperature and power consumption has become a major constrains, many researches aimed to address the power efficiency and temperature problems. In this work, we studied the effect of the programming languages statements on system power consumption for three control loop statements. These statements are: For Loop, While Loop, and Do-While Loop. For each of the three statements six measurements were obtained: average temperature for the control loop, average maximum reached temperature for the control loop, average percentage of execution time when the control loop reach the maximum temperature, average number of times the control loop reach the maximum temperature, average power consumption for the control loop, and average execution time for the control loop. The findings indicated that the For loop statement was the most efficient control loop statement. Also, it showed that the While loop statement was the worst in efficiency.
