In recent years, large-scale wind power integration on electric system gradually becomes to be a major trend to the development of wind power industry. Thus, high precision wind speed and power prediction technology is urgently needed. Being different from traditional wind prediction models that largely rely on various numerical methods, this paper considers the dynamical essence features of atmospheric motion. A brand new Lorenz disturbance prediction model, which is based on wavelet neural networks (WNN), is proposed and called LSWNN shortterm wind speed prediction model. Compared with the results of WNN model, LSWNN model is more accurate for the actual wind speed distribution forecasting. In this article, the research not only has important theoretical value on analyzing atmospheric nonlinear motion process, but also has profound engineering guidance in wind speed prediction and wind energy resource exploitation.

This work includes a review of two cases study of mobile applications that use Identity-Based Cryptography (IBC) to protect communications. It also describes a proposal of a new mobile application that combines the use of IBC for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth communication between smartphones, with the promising Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for secure authentication. The proposed scheme involves NFC pairing to establish as public key a piece of information linked to the device, such as the phone number, so that this information is then used in an IBC scheme for peer-to-peer communication. This is a work in progress, so the implementation of a prototype based on smartphones is still being improved. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Objects having social properties is a well explored field in Sociology and the idea has been introduced into the field of Internet of Things (IoT) recently. In this paper, the authors analyze some social features of IoT and propose a Sociology-based interaction relationship model between IoT objects. The relationship model, together with the automatic relationship recognition, can enhance the dynamics and the autonomy of communications in IoT. In the latter part of the paper, the authors give an experiment based on real data as a simple example to show how the paper's idea reduces the dependency of IoT on human intervention and makes IoT objects more `smart'.

Higher education institutions in Indonesia are widely dispersed by their expertise, their supporting infrastructure, and even by geographical separation. To facilitate knowledge sharing in such a complex system is a challenging task. This paper proposes a conceptual model of a knowledge market as a possible mechanism to overcome the problem. By employing the market mechanism in higher education knowledge sharing, both seller and buyer of knowledge can meet and make transactions to exchange the results of intellectual efforts. When used is a digital environment, we use the term 'Knowledge as a Service' to designate the support of the market actor and the term 'Market as a Service' to refer the organization of the market. Supporting Optimum knowledge exchange is achieved as a consequence of the market mechanism. This framework is to be evaluated by a case study to support the design of a framework for knowledge exchange in the higher education system in Indonesia. © 2014 ieee.

Considerable effort has been made by researchers from various areas of science to forecast financial time series such as stock market and foreign exchange market. Recent studies have shown that the market can be outperformed by trading systems built with soft computing techniques. This paper aims to compare different trading systems based on support vector regression (SVR), growing hierarchical self-organizing maps (GHSOM) and genetic algorithms (G A) when tested against nine currency pairs of the foreign exchange market (Forex). The experiments were performed using the sliding window strategy. The results showed that the GA-based trading systems outperformed the SVRGHSOM model when evaluated by four performance metrics, including an statistical test. © 2014 ieee.

Information processing is a very broad area in which many problems are computationally intensive and thus, they require parallelization and acceleration based on new technologies. The Xilinx Zynq-7000 all programmable system-on-chip can be seen as a very adequate platform permitting application-specific software and problem-targeted hardware to be coupled on a single configurable microchip. The tutorial is dedicated to multi-level software/hardware co-design techniques and system architectures that combine general-purpose computers, multi-core application-specific processing, and accelerators in reconfigurable hardware with emphasis on broad parallelism. Four projects from the scope of data processing, application informatics, parallel algorithms (mapped to hardware), and combinatorial search are briefly characterized and will be demonstrated in fully implemented and ready to test projects that include software and reconfigurable hardware linked with on-chip high-performance interfaces. Particular design examples, potential practical applications, experiments and comparisons will be demonstrated.

One of the aims of the human-like computational paradigm of granular computing (GrC) is to discover - and capture - high-level knowledge from raw data in the form of information granules. In real-world applications, information is often associated with uncertainty due to factors such as measurement imprecision, low process repeatability, as well as sparse data measurements. Hence, data uncertainty should be taken into consideration while carrying out information granulation. In this paper, a framework of iterative information granulation is presented that for the first time in the literature is enhanced with measures of uncertainty during the granulation process. A special case study is investigated, one of a complex manufacturing processes and associated information consisting of sparse, often conflicting data (measurements). An algorithmic procedure is proposed for quantifying the uncertainty caused by conflict during the iterative information granulation process;this is achieved via the use of the Shannon entropy theory to capture uncertainty during the iterative merging of the information granules. The resulting conflict measure is used to 'guide' the granulation process into solutions of low-conflict granules. The result is an enhanced granular information set, in terms of distinguishability and interpretability. The granular data set is then 'mapped' into the linguistic terms of a Neural-Fuzzy (NF) rule-base to form a model that represents the process under investigation. The proposed GrC-NF methodology is applied to the complex manufacturing process of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of steel. It is shown how the proposed framework is able to capture good quality information granules from raw process data, which are then mapped into a Neural-Fuzzy model that predicts the resulting torque on the FSW tool with more than 90% accuracy.

The dynamics behaviour and underlying principles of macrophages movement within living bodies still being unknown, we are currently studying unique sets of pictures in order to better understand them and develop a simulator able to successfully reproduce them. In previous works, we presented our early efforts in building a simple 2D macrophages simulator, as well as a new set of 3D data and a new tool to visualize them. In this paper, our goal is to progress towards a full analysis of our 3D data by extending our visualizing tool into an analysing tool, able to fully break the data about macrophages movement. By applying object recognition and object tracking techniques, we developed a tool able to display and record all information relative to the moves of a given three-dimensional macrophages set, information we will be able to use in order to develop a new 3D macrophages simulator.

These days, Automated screening systems are becoming the best possible solution for not only reducing burden on the medical practitioners but also reducing human prone errors with the help of accurate automated diagnosis of the disease. In Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), the crucial step for an automated system is exhaustive detection of the lesions. In this paper, a modified red lesion detection method is presented based on some changes to the filters used in the prior work by Spencer et al. Along with this, a novel three stage false positive elimination technique is presented to remove non red-lesion candidates detected in the modified filter approach. Firstly, false positive candidates detected elsewhere in the retina are removed. Secondly, falsely found candidates on the blood vessels are removed. Third, candidates found in the optic disc area are removed using our earlier work. To evaluate our method for the detection of red lesions, we examined two sets of fundus images, first set constituting of 94 images obtained from the routine screening at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Thiruvananthapuram and the second set of 89 images from DIARETDB1 database. When determining whether an image contains red lesions, our method achieved a sensitivity of 95.6% and specificity of 93.2%. Also, our method detected 78.9% red lesions present in each of the images. © 2014 ieee.

Cloud computing has increasingly been used as a platform for running large business and data processing applications. Although clouds have become extremely popular, when it comes to data processing, their use incurs high costs. Conversely, Desktop Grids, have been used in a wide range of projects, and are able to take advantage of the large number of resources provided by volunteers, free of charge. Merging cloud computing and desktop grids into a hybrid infrastructure can provide a feasible low-cost solution for big data analysis. Although frameworks like MapReduce have been devised to exploit commodity hardware, their use in a hybrid infrastructure raise some challenges due to their large resource heterogeneity and high churn rate. This study introduces BIGhybrid, a toolkit that is used to simulate MapReduce in hybrid environments. Its main goal is to provide a framework for developers and system designers that can enable them to address the issues of Hybrid MapReduce. In this paper, we describe the framework which simulates the assembly of two existing middleware: BitDew- MapReduce for Desktop Grids and Hadoop-BlobSeer for Cloud computing. The experimental results that are included in this work demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. © 2014 ieee.
