Future Internet and distributed cloud (FIDC) testbeds are rapidly becoming important research and educational resoures worldwide. While FIDC testbeds may be built on diverse technologies, they share the primary capabilities of slicing (virtualized end-to-end configurations of computing, networking, and storage resources) and deep programmability (experimenter programmability of all resources from low level hardware to virtualized components). FIDC testbeds often achieve their deep programmability through software defined networking (SDN) capabilities, which researchers employ both to construct per-Application and per-experiment virtual networks, and to intelligently steer traffic throughout the virtual network/cloud environment. © 2014 ieee.

Climate models that predict polar ice sheet behavior require accurate measurements of the bedrock-ice and ice-air boundaries in ground-penetrating radar imagery. Identifying these features is typically performed by hand, which can be tedious and error prone. We propose an approach for automatically estimating layer boundaries by viewing this task as a probabilistic inference problem. Our solution uses Markov-Chain Monte Carlo to sample from the joint distribution over all possible layers conditioned on an image. Layer boundaries can then be estimated from the expectation over this distribution, and confidence intervals can be estimated from the variance of the samples. We evaluate the method on 560 echograms collected in Antarctica, and compare to a state-of-the-art technique with respect to hand-labeled images. These experiments show an approximately 50% reduction in error for tracing both bedrock and surface layers. © 2014 ieee.

Mobile cloud computing, which comes up in recent years, is a new computing paradigm. In mobile cloud, mobile users can access and schedule the resources or services in remote clouds via wireless networks, which we call mobile cloud task scheduling. They even can build mobile micro-cloud (MuCloud) with mobile device to provide lightweight service. However, unreliable wireless connection and dynamic join and quit of MuCloud make task scheduling in mobile cloud face more challenges than in wired cloud. Moreover, from both the users and service providers' perspective, task scheduling is a multi-objective optimization problem. Small makespan and load balancing are pursued by mobile users and cloud service providers respectively. In this paper, we advance a demand-driven task scheduling model and introduce an estimate method to predict warranty complete time of tasks in wireless network. An improved genetic algorithm using 2D chromosome (2DCGA) is presented to tackle multi-objective task scheduling. Simulation experiments show: 1) compared with Markov model, our estimate method has higher accuracy of prediction and more reasonable prediction results of probability of task scheduling failure; 2) 2DCGA has good performance for task scheduling. When compared with IGA, it has smaller makespan and lower deviation of load; 3) objective priority can be adjusted exactly by weights of fitness functions. It makes 2DCGA suitable for multi-objective optimization.

This paper introduces the Cloud Efficiency (CE) metric, a novel runtime metric which assesses how effectively an application uses software-defined infrastructure. The CE metric is computed as the ratio of two functions: i) a benefit function which captures the current set of benefits derived from the application, and ii) a cost function which describes the current charges incurred by the application's resources. We motivate the need for the CE metric, describe in further detail how to compute it, and present experimental results demonstrating its calculation.

Recent research on automatic analysis of social media data during disasters has given insight into how to provide valuable and timely information to formal response agencies-and members of the public-in these safety-critical situations. For the most part, this work has followed a bottom-up approach in which data are analyzed first, and the target audience's needs are addressed later. Here, we adopt a top-down approach in which the starting point are information needs. We focus on the aid agency tasked with coordinating humanitarian response within the United Nations: OCHA, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. When disasters occur, OCHA must quickly make decisions based on the most complete picture of the situation they can obtain. They are responsible for organizing search and rescue operations, emergency food assistance, and similar tasks. Given that complete knowledge of any disaster event is not possible, they gather information from myriad available sources, including social media. In this paper, we examine the rapid assessment procedures used by OCHA, and explain how they executed these procedures during the 2013 Typhoon Yolanda. In addition, we interview a small sample of OCHA employees, focusing on their uses and views of social media data. In addition, we show how state-of-the-art social media processing methods can be used to produce information in a format that takes into account what large international humanitarian organizations require to meet their constantly evolving needs.

The digital divide between urban and rural areas is now attracting active research. There are a host of reasons for this divide and this paper presents the work in progress about one proposed solution to a major technical problem causing this. It has been noted that the high frequency WiFi and similar signals are not well suited for the wilderness type of environment with dense foliage. Additionally, such terrains also impose stringent restriction on computational and electric power as well as in cost. This calls forth the need for a new type of signal that can work efficiently in such environments and a low cost, low bandwidth, low frequency signal that can possibly work is identified in the form of Sound. This paper presents a new network architecture that is designed to work with the low frequency, ubiquitous signals such as sound. The architecture can work in peer-to-peer ad-hoc networks mode, infrastructure mode, broadcast mode (for remote telemetry) etc. using wideband multi-channel transmission. However, since the proposed architecture uses low frequency signal, it is expected to deliver low throughput as well. Using an ubiquitous signal such as sound makes the entire process very cost effective as it eliminates the need of expensive transceivers. © 2014 ieee.

Using 3D building models is extremely helpful throughout the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) lifecycle. Such models coupled with virtual walk through can enable customers to decide and be satisfied with their dream building. Manually creating a polygonal 3D model of a set of floor plans is nontrivial and requires skill and time. This project introduces and reviews a mechanism for applying interior and exterior design constructs after the conversion of 2D drawings into 3D Building Information Model (BIM). This research demonstrates an automated 3D model reconstruction of real world object from an un-calibrated image sequence targeting the same scene, which can be used for interior and exterior design. There are many key techniques in 3D reconstruction from image sequences, including feature matching, fundamental matrix estimation, projective reconstruction, camera self-calibration, dense stereo matching and Euclidean reconstruction. The effectiveness of the algorithms was evaluated in the experiments with many real image sequences. © 2014 ieee.

The concepts of both business process management (BPM) and Green IS are on the agenda of IS researchers. BPM has a long-lasting legacy from enterprise resource planning and business process re-engineering. Green IS is still a young topic, although significant research progress has been made in recent years. However, in terms of combining the two aspects, there is still a lack of research. While there are some initial papers, concepts, and thoughts about this subject, a clear definition is missing. In this paper, we examine the literature concerning the research streams of Green IS and BPM and combine it with the initial research on Green BPM. Consequently, we present a definition for Green Business Process Management as well as a multidimensional framework for further research. We argue that research should focus on dimensions we could derive from literature in order to close the gaps in the field of Green BPM.

Many of today’s applications attempt to connect mobile users with resources available in their immediate surroundings. Existing approaches for discovering available resources are either centralized, providing a single point of lookup somewhere in the cloud or ad hoc, requiring mobile devices to directly connect to other nearby devices. In this paper, we explore an approach based on cloudlets, marrying these two approaches to reflect both the proximity requirements of the applications and the dynamic nature of the resources. We present the design and implementation of a cloudlet-based proximal discovery service, solving key technical challenges along the way. We then use real world data traces to demonstrate, evaluate, and benchmark our service and compare it to acompletely centralized approach. We find that, in supporting highly localized queries, our service out performs the centralized approach without significantly affecting the quality of the discovery results. © Institute for Computer Sciences, Social informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

The Scalable Video Coding (SVC) compression technique is extension of H.264/AVC which is developed by Joint Video Team of the ITU-T VCEG and the ISO/EC MPEG. SVC enables scalability support and capable to adapt bitrate with lower temporal or spatial resolutions for wireless channel bandwidth those varying with time. In this paper, we proposed a cross-layer mechanism, which includes video packet prioritization and Quality of Services (QoS) mapping, for the transmitting SVC video over the ieee 802.1 1n wireless networks without aggregation. The proposed mechanism delivery enables interaction with Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, providing controlling of different Access Classifications (ACs) for video packets. Our purposed Traffic Queue Controlling Cross-layer Mechanism (TQCCLM) performs with the SVC packet prioritization at the MAC layer according to Temporal Identification (TId) Quality Identification (QId) values of incoming video SliceData and access queue length. Simulation results shows that the proposed mechanism improves SVC video quality when compared to ieee 802.1 1n EDCA default mapping method.
