Visual analytics aims to be scalable in several aspects, one of which is being able to handle large data volumes in an interactive system. This can be achieved by designing efficient analysis and visualization algorithms that ensure short response times to user interactions or by providing appropriate hardware. With increasing data sizes, however, an analyst will eventually have to wait for the completion of computations or renderings. For these cases, we present a framework which remains responsive and keeps the analyst informed on and in control of pending operations. Our implementation builds on performing complex analysis and rendering tasks in the background, providing progress indications, displaying preliminary results, and allowing changes to task elements while continuing to evaluate others. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach for huge data sets by analyzing a real-world public transportation vehicle data set.

Today, electronic devices may have multiple possibilities to communicate, either through wired or wireless interfaces. Despite this diversity, devices still fail to fully use the available resources by not simultaneously using multiple channels to their full extent. This is especially true in wireless channels where the efficient aggregation of multiple channels has proved to be a difficult task, as shown in recent simulation based works. In this Work In progress paper, we present a testbed suitable to the evaluation of aggregation algorithms under real network environments. The proposed testbed aims to simulate and experiment both existing and new aggregation algorithms, optimized for wireless heterogeneous communication channels that can be deployed in industrial environments. In order to illustrate the merits of the proposed testbed, we also describe its use in the performance assessment of two aggregation algorithms: Linux Bonding Driver and Multipath TCP.

This work presents an improvement on a novel Selection Method to develop applications in the context of the Service-Oriented computing paradigm. We have defined an Interface Compatibility procedure to assess Web Services by exploring the available information from WSDL documents. Such information involves data types from return, parameters and exceptions, and identifiers from parameters and operation names. The lexical database WordNet was originally used as a semantic basis to assess terms from identifiers. In this paper we use the DISCO database as an alternative, to evaluate the independence of the approach w.r.t. the semantic basis. We made a comparative analysis through different experiments with a data-set of 465 real-life Web Services and measured the results using metrics from the Information Retrieval field. © 2014 ieee.

Maintenance management is certainly the important factor to support the successfulness of Small and Medium Industries (SMIs). The SMIs will gain larger profits with the correctness of maintenance system which can minimize the expenses incurred. The application with Decision Making Grid (DMG) for appropriate maintenance strategy has been achieved with favorable outcome. However, the problems, i.e. incompleteness, unavailability and inconsistency of data are the common practice gaps in SMIs. The presences of data gaps cause adverse effects on the DMG process which is certainly not able to provide satisfactory results of maintenance strategies. To overcome the problems, the current research applies the most optimal heuristic adaptive methods of Genetic Algorithm (GA) to generate optimal variable values of machine breakdowns from a DMG process on observed SMIs to be processed into other related problematic SMIs. The combination method has produced remarkable validation results against decision-making of maintenance strategies for all machines with the accuracy of 90,81%. The results deliver the trust toward related SMIs with the data problems or even new concerned SMIs with the absences of data to utilize this DMG-GA method for maintenance decision making which can help maintenance personnel by giving the correct selection of the maintenance strategy. © 2014 ieee.

The non-destructive, rapid and accurate monitoring diagnosis of rapeseed diseases is of significance for sustainable development of rapeseed production and environment protection. The spectrum data of rapeseed leaf leukoplakia were collected in the experimental Farm of Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Science in 2013 and 2014. Firstly, the common distinctive bands of the disease and the health were found by comparing re flectance spectrum of leaves in the field and under black background. The results showed that with the progress of the growth period, re flectance of disease leaves decreased earlier than healthy leaves. It was the best period to identify rapeseed leukoplakia from11 days after early anthesis to 9 days after finish flowering to identify rapeseed leukoplakia in the field due to during this period the re flectance of healthy leaves remained at 35 % while the disease diseased to 30 %. The sensitive band was in the range of 760–1080 nm. The correlation among disease index(DI), agronomic parameters, and the re flectance of the disease samples were analysed, and the results showed that there were high correlations between DI, and agronomic parameters and re flectance, e.g., the correlation between the leaf moisture content and the re flectance in 460 nm, 550 nm, 650 nm, 710 nm, 760 nm,1480 nm, and 1600 nm, between the leaf nitrogen content and the re flectance in810 nm, 870 nm, 1080 nm, 1280 nm, 1320 nm, 1540 nm, 1600 nm, 1650 nm,and 1700 nm, and between the SPAD value and the re flectance in 1200 nm,1280 nm, and 1540 nm had significance with p < 0.01. The quantitative models of agronomic parameters based on reflectance were developed by stepwise regression, principal component analysis, and curve fitting. The data of rapeseed leukoplakia in 2013 and rapeseed virus in 2014 were used to test. In this work-in-progress, we consider a lifted inference algorithm and analyze its scaling properties. We compare two versions of this algorithm - the original implementation and a newer implementation built on a database. Our preliminary results show that constructing the factor graph from the relational model rather than the construction of the compressed model is the key bottleneck for the application of lifted inference in large domains. © Copyright 2014 Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. In model-based design of cyber-physical systems, such as switched mixed-signal circuits or software-controlled physical systems, it is common to develop a sequence of system models of different fidelity and complexity, each appropriate for a particular design or verification task. In such a sequence, one model is often derived from the other by a process of simplification or implementation. E.g. a Simulink model might be implemented on an embedded processor via automatic code generation. Three questions naturally present themselves: how do we quantify closeness between the two systems? How can we measure such closeness? If the original system satisfies some formal property, can we automatically infer what properties are then satisfied by the derived model? This paper addresses all three questions: we quantify the closeness between original and derived model via a distance measure between their outputs. We then propose two computational methods for approximating this closeness measure. Finally, we derive syntactical re-writing rules which, when applied to a Metric Temporal Logic specification satisfied by the original model, produce a formula satisfied by the derived model. We demonstrate the soundness of the theory with several experiments. © 2014 ieee.

The exponential growth of video data produced by surveillance cameras, cell phones and movie post-production creates the need to process big-data using methods that are able to produce instantaneous result. Video summarization can be accomplished and represented in several manners. The achieved summaries might be a sequence of images or short videos. In our method, an input video is divided into segments. From each segment we calculate key frames using three different key frame definitions, to summarize the video data. The contribution of this paper is to describe how to incorporate techniques that extract on the fly results. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.
