Network availability is of paramount importance in optical telecommunication networks. Their rising connectivity and consequently their availability is compromised by link and node failures, usually due to physical force (e.g. digging, earthquake or fire). Single link failures can in turn cause multiple failures in case a failure hits a shared risk link group (SRLG), which is a group of logically distinct links sharing a common physical resource, be it a cable or a conduit. The number and length of SRLGs, as well as the characteristics of the underlying physical topology can significantly affect network availability. Especially, the physical topology can be represented by realistic synthetic graphs which are created by numerous geographic graph generators. This work describes the implementation and usage of six different physical topology models (Random Geometric, Gabriel, Relative Neighborhood, K-Nearest Neighbor, Waxman and Spatial Barabási-Albert) for investigation of the influence of the underlying topology on the optical telecommunication network availability. Network availability is estimated using Monte Carlo simulations based on a model of optical telecommunication network implemented by network simulator ns-3. Scenarios utilizing six topology models both in absence and presence of SRLGs are studied, and the optical network availability sensitivity to the underlying physical network topology is presented as the main result. © 2014 ieee.

Resilience to failure is a key concern for next-generation high-performance computing systems. The dominant fault tolerance mechanism, coordinated checkpoint/restart, is projected to no longer be a viable option on these systems due to its predicted overheads. Rollback avoidance has the potential to prolong the viability of coordinated checkpoint/restart by allowing an application to make meaningful forward progress, perhaps with degraded performance, despite the occurrence or imminence of a failure. In this paper, we present two general analytic models for the performance of rollback avoidance techniques and validate these models against the performance of existing rollback avoidance techniques. We then use these models to evaluate the applicability of rollback avoidance for next-generation exascale systems. This includes analysis of exascale system design questions such as: (1) how effective must an application-specific rollback avoidance technique be to usefully augment checkpointing in an exascale system? (2) when is rollback avoidance on its own a viable alternative to coordinated checkpointing? and (3) how do rollback avoidance techniques and system characteristics interact to influence application performance?

The proposed 6-Hop P2P (6-Hop) is an improved overlay network topology that intends to enhance the current P2P that houses a file sharing and media broadcasting (FSMB) application. A P2P system provides a serverless platform for the current FSMB application. It allows media files in each peer to be located by other peers in the network using any word in the file name. The current FSMB application is a closed system where only registered peers can join the overlay network. However, the current broadcasting system has shown some aspects of inefficiency. Two principle weaknesses identified are as follow: query messages flood the overlay network which taking up the bandwidth of the network; and, the search service is not reliable. When a new peer joins the P2P-based FSMB system, registered peers will randomly join clusters in the network. When a peer queries a specific or part of a file name, the current P2P examine all the peers and all the files in each peer. This has resulted in low recall rate and heavy query messages in the overlay network. The proposed 6-Hop P2P is an overlay network that adopts small-world characteristics attempting to improve the recall rate and to reduce the amount of query messages. The proposed P2P is designed using the "similarity interest" value to reduce unnecessary routing and to cut down the number of hops required by the search. It also rewires peers base on recall-rate learning algorithm to form clusters relying on the `interest' bit value of QRP table. This paper presents the proposed 6-Hop model and the work-in-progress results with a short discussion on its prototype.

NG Health IT and UMBC are collaborating together to advance the fields of healthcare and bioinformatics, with an emphasis targeting Personalized Medicine. As progress in biomedical analysis and personalized medicine provide new sources and levels of information about genomics and other 'omics, problems of sorting through, integrating, and presenting this information to clinical practitioners to allow them to reach sound, actionable, conclusions represents a significant challenge given the nature of the data which is heterogeneous and large. This project will provide significant value for the Veterans Administration (VA) and MHS systems by providing improved access to care and improved clinical decision making utilizing clinical, genomic, proteomic, and other 'omic information. The work being done focuses on the data access and analysis of multiple sources of healthcare data.

Annually, a lot of patients in Canadian hospitals are contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, resulting in abundant amounts of money spent on the health-care system. Even though most bacteria are risk-free to healthy individuals, the symptoms of bacterial contamination can be severe for patients with a weakened immune system. Early detection is critical for improved patient care and can help in minimizing the risk of cross contamination between patients. This work aims at using state-of-the-art technologies for developing handheld multibiosensors on a single chip for pathogenic bacteria detection. There is extensive demand for a low-cost, rapid, selective and sensitive method for detecting bacteria in medical diagnosis, and food-safety inspection. In this work, we are introducing more than one technique based on a CMOS/MEMS technology batch process for detecting pathogen bacterial cell at a low concentration level. The methodology of the proposed multi-labs-on-a-single-chip system (MLoC) lies on miniaturizing transducers, which is utilizing a sort of technique that has the capability to smooth the progress of point-of-care testing (POCT) and become conscious state-of-the-art molecular analysis independently of the state-of-the-art laboratory. MLoC methodology can be categorized as electrochemical, capacitive and optical, on the light of their sensing theory, incorporated with interdigitated microelectrode array (IDMA). © 2014 ieee.

This paper presents the main concepts and ideas of the research program ACT (Advancing Care Coordination & TeleHealth Deployment). ACT focuses on studying Coordinated Care (CC) and TeleHealth (TH) services for chronically ill patients, such as heart failure, COPD, diabetes, as well as co-morbid patients. The potential of these services to improve quality of care within European healthcare systems can be fully released only when certain barriers are overcome and organizational changes progress. Therefore, the purpose of ACT, as described in this work, is to study in a qualitative and quantitative manner, with a solid and reproducible research methodology, the organizational and structural procedures supporting effective implementation of CC&TH services in the routine management of chronic patients. The consortium will investigate key organizational and structural drivers in 5 European healthcare regions, and eventually produce a toolkit for use across Europe. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

A theory of fuzzy probability is presented based on fuzzy sets, which extends the conventional evenly distributed probability space to a complex distribution of fuzzy probability space. A mathematical model of fuzzy probability is formally introduced in the fuzzy sample space. Algebraic operators of fuzzy probability are rigorously described with a set of theorems on the algebra of fuzzy probabilities. Typical applications of the fuzzy probability theory are illustrated for dealing with random fuzzy events, fuzzy causations, and semantic uncertainties in formal inference, qualification, quantification, classification, cognitive linguistics, cognitive informatics, computational intelligence, and cognitive computing.

Hotel photo gallery provides an opportunity for travelers to see interior room and facilities provided in the hotel. However, photo quality uploaded by hotel guests may not meet the professional photo quality, which in turn could impact user experience of potential travelers. Thus, this study investigates how Malaysian travelers perceive the importance of photo gallery and their emotional responses toward different types of photo. A low fidelity prototype of the photo gallery tablet application was developed. Fourteen Malaysian participants took part in this preliminary study. Results of eye-tracking data and cued retrospective think aloud showed that Malaysian participants gave positive emotion responses in less than 1 minute and half of the participants fixated on both professional photo and traveler photo. Professional photo had more influence on participants' attitude toward the hotel and perceived room quality compared to traveler photo. Participants also agreed that photo gallery is important for them. © 2014 ieee.

This paper provides an overview of recent research efforts for digital media analysis and description. It focuses on the specific problem of human centered video analysis for activity and identity recognition in unconstrained environments. Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are of growing interest in test development and in the measurement of human performance. The DINA (deterministic input, noisy, and gate) model has been widely used in cognitive diagnosis tests and in the process of test development. Central to many such models, the well-known Q-matrix [1], which specifies the item-attribute relationships and two noise parameters in DINA model related to item response functions are termed as slip and guessing. Slip parameter indicates a student with mastery of all of the attributes that an item requires fails to answer the item correctly. In contrast, guessing parameter indicates a student lacks the attributes that are required by an item but succeeds to answer the item correctly. In this paper, we developed a new method and presented an alternate recursive algorithm to learn Q-matrix and uncertainty variables slip and guessing based on Boolean Matrix Factorization (BMF) and Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) respectively for DINA model of CDM. In particularly, we spontaneously transferred the deterministic Q-matrix learning problem into BMF problem. Because BMF is an NP-hard problem [2], we proposed an alternate recursive method to find approximate solution by adding one dimension in attribute latent space in each step. On the other hand, we analytically estimated the slip and guessing parameters through the maximum likelihood of uncertainty variables. The optimum process is alternate recursive between latent attribute space and uncertainty variable space. Simulation results show that the MLE Q-matrix learning algorithm has fast convergence to the optimal solution under suitable initial values of Qinit and Ainit. This is extremely important and applicable when the method is extended to big data. © 2014 ieee.
