Energy storage plays an important role in managing effectively the integration of distributed renewable energy generation within the electrical networks of the future. Pervasive monitoring and control of these systems makes growing use of information and communication technologies, which aim at secure and economic operation at various scales from microgrids to system-wide integration. Among these, low power wireless communication and computing embedded systems, in the main form of wireless sensor networks (WSN), have become a robust solution. Through hardware and software architectures, along with appropriate mechanisms e.g. for data collection and aggregation, wireless communication protocols and standards, they represent a valid solution in assuring continuous and reliable operation. The paper introduces a cyber-physical framework for renewable storage systems monitoring and control and discusses the application of wireless sensor networks to densely instrument such deployments. A hardware-in-the-loop type structure is designed which allows both testing various types of real storage systems, as well as more complex simulated models derived from large scale applications. We argue that the specific advantages brought forward by the advances in WSN technology can be put to efficient use for local distributed intelligence and control. Experimental data collected is analyzed in order to achieve an insight into the characteristics of the proposed solution. © 2014 ieee.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming integral part of today's world due to their wide range of applications. WSNs are used in industrial applications such as factory automation and control, environmental monitoring etc. which are of low data rate but demand Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of reliability and timeliness along with energy efficiency. A WSN's lifetime depends on the rate of consumption of energy by the sensors. One way to save energy is the judicious use of active and inactive periods in the duty cycle based Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. The slotted ieee 802.15.4 MAC protocol provides for it. The duty cycle mechanism however has the potential to affect the performance of the network in terms of QoS due to possible higher packet collision rate in the active periods with reduction in duty cycle. For such applications an appropriate selection of duty cycle that maintains the required QoS is vital while ensuring longevity of the network. Another important MAC parameter that has a role in the performance of WSNs based on ieee 802.15.4/ ZigBee is the length of the Beacon Interval (BI). In this paper we present the results of our simulation experiments for determining appropriate Duty Cycle and Beacon Interval that maximizes energy efficiency while ensuring the QoS requirements of the application. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Ohya and Volovich proposed the polynomial time quantum algorithm to solve SAT problem which is one of NP-complete problems. This algorithm contains effective amplification process, so called a Chaos Amplifie, based on classical Chaotic dynamics. Recently we described this process by the GKSL master equation on two qubits system. In this talk, we introduce an efficien quantum algorithm for searching problem using the Chaos Amplifie.

Denoising is an essential application to improve image quality, especially in medical imaging. This paper introduces an example and patch-based learning method for reducing Gaussian noise and Poisson noise which often appear in medical imaging modalities using ionizing radiation. In the proposed method, denoising is performed by learning the regression model based on a set of the nearest neighbors of a given noisy patch, with the help of a given set of standard images. The method is evaluated and compared to several state-of-the-art denoising methods. The obtained results confirm its efficiency, especially for heavy noise. © 2014 ieee.

Cognitive systems are evolving system as governed by perception-action processes, memory, attention, and intelligence. Classical dynamic systems have either no memory, or very short memory, as signified by the Markovian assumption of exponential relaxation. This talk provides an overview of multi-scale and poly-scale modeling of such systems, with emphasis on poly-scale measures and fractional-order differential equations as the basis for modeling of dynamical systems with short-and long-term memory.

Non-verbal people with autism are usually unable to communicate normally using natural languages. They can, however, learn to communicate through specific symbols and images. Special education instructors have adopted this method of communication to teach non-verbal people with autism. They introduce the symbols and images to them through different methodologies. This learning process appeared to be effective but it is very long. The process is carried out manually and requires a lots of times, dedication, and resources. The instructors should find the materials in different formats and circumstances. They should repeat the lessons several times and normally in a face-to-face framework. We propose in this paper a mobile-based application that allows non-verbal people with autism to learn and communicate with their surroundings using a smart device. They can then be taught to use specific symbols and images through the smart mobile phones. They can form simple words and sentences to express their feelings and needs. The application is flexible and allows the addition of new contents very easily. To assess the progress of the users, different exercises and puzzles are proposed. These allow the users to improve their skills and to continue learning outside the classrooms. © 2014 ieee.

Due to the ongoing fight situation in Syria, most of the private universities around the capital Damascus had to abandon their campuses and move to safer locations inside the city. In the case of the authors the new place was not equipped with any system for enabling the delivery of course contents over the Internet. Further more, university administration did not have the will to invest in establishing an e-learning system in the new place due to the high cost and uncertainty of continuity. The only good thing was that Internet was still working in most areas. So the teaching staff thought of using the free storage service offered by a number of providers on the WEB for hosting course contents as a start. This worked well, but it did not fulfill all necessary functions. Therefore, we started working on a new system utilizing Cloud computing for managing courses. The new system utilizes a 'Platform as a Service' model offered for free on the WEB to enable distributing course materials electronically as a first step, and is intended to perform more function gradually. © 2014 ieee.

In the current trend towards the evidence based medicine we should not forget previously collected data, neither in hand-written records nor in legacy systems. In this paper we present a process to integrate the data gathered by therapeutic machines of our industrial partner used for treatment of neurological and orthopedic disorders. These devices are deployed in numerous physical therapy clinics worldwide. During a therapy session they collect and store precise measurements of various physical parameters. As they have been used for many years, they hold a large and valuable set of data. One goal of the project was to develop a mechanism for transferring those dispersed data to a central server where they can be analyzed by a team of specialists in medical statistics. Another goal was to develop a software that permits to define flexibly various statistics by those specialists, without a necessity of having IT skills. In addition to the system permitting to collect and analyze the therapy session data, an application has been developed to implement a standardized quality of life questionnaire (EuroQol-5D) that allows to compare the results of the therapy using this machine with other therapy methods. As an incentive to cooperate in the program, the patient receives a personal report about his/her therapy progress, possibly benchmarked against the progress of other patients suffering from the same disease. This report also can be flexibly configured by a software developed in this project. In this way, valuable data, previously dormant on isolated systems worldwide, can be reused to validate and improve the therapy for the benefit of the patients.

As we all know, human vision is quite sensitive to abnormal behaviors, which is attributed to the discharging of the receptor cells in the brain visual cortex and the ensuing bioelectrical energy features. Inspired by this biological nature, this paper constructs a computing model to describe video dynamic energy, which can further improve the perception of machine vision to abnormal behaviors. Experiments show that this computing model can extract video energy features of abnormal behaviors under complex environment.
