The nsf-funded project titled "computing in context" (DUE- 1141209) aims to develop and evaluate new teaching materials and pedagogies that promote students' active learning in four inter-disciplinary areas of relevance to computing. We report progress and current status of the four areas of the cic project, and introduce the 2015 nsf workshop on curricular development for computing in context (cic15). The workshop focuses on the area of intelligence and security informatics, and is a venue for computing scholars to present their works on developing, evaluating, and disseminating curricular materials in this area. © 2015 ACM.

Despite the needs for developing next-generation business analytics professionals, there is a severe lack of curricular modules and materials that emphasize context-specific learning of analytics. In this research, we evaluated a set of new curricular modules developed in the context of intelligence and security informatics (ISI). Our modules use an active learning pedagogy, business issues in the context of ISI, and realistic characters and stories to engage students in active learning of analytics concepts and skills. Findings from the study that compared two groups of students (control vs. treatment groups) show a statistically significant difference in students' average performance in homework assignments. Students who learned the subject using the new contextual curricular modules were found to achieve significantly higher average scores in homework assignments than students who learned the subject through the traditional method. The findings are very encouraging and show promise on using the new curricular modules in the teaching of foundation analytics courses. © 2015 ACM.

The importance of applying context in pedagogy has been the subject of research for decades and has been explored in many subject areas. context in pedagogy refers to linking the teaching of a particular subject or topic to some other subject area that is meaningful, making the topic being taught seem less abstract or irrelevant. In this paper, the subject of Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI) is used to provide context for the teaching of other topics in computer science such as data structures, web application development, database management, and data analytics. A number of possible learning modules are proposed, each linked to one of two ISI contexts. With national security and computer and network security being highly relevant and relatable to students, teaching various computer science subject matters with this context in mind may help make the material seem more concrete and understandable. © 2015 ACM.
