The evolution of wireless communication protocols drives the quest of power-efficient and flexible computing for embedded DSPs, but popular architectures, very-long-instruction-word (VLIW) and application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP), serve as opposite extreme cases in regard to power-efficiency and flexibility. To this end, we present DeAr: Dual-thread Architecture DSP, which manipulates a multi-banked register file that enables simultaneous multi-threading (SMT), and a transport-triggered bus that exploits the data forwarding mechanism in its compact datapath. We also propose a novel scheduling algorithm which leverages the compact hardware to achieve both high throughput and flexible computation. In the experiment of common DSP kernels, DeAr saves 20.3%-13.1% and 31.8%-2.2% of power dissipation, 36.1%-31.5% and 28.2%-5.7% of area, compared with VLIW and ASIP respectively.

A single hidden layer based Multi-Layered Feedforward Neural Network (MLFFNN) with an input layer and an output layer after appropriate training performs image compression with the hidden layer while the decompression is performed at the output layer with optimum weights and suitable bias values. The computational complexities of multi-layered architecture impose challenges in hardware implementation with the requirement of large number of multipliers, adders and memory elements for computation. Hardware circuits designed to implement Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architectures are referred to as Hardware Neural Networks (HNN). The implementation of HNN offers advantages in terms of area and power. The proposal explains the implementation of FeedForward Neural Network (FFNN) algorithm, and is realized using modified architecture that compresses and decompresses images that are obtained from sub-bands. The modified architecture is implemented using pipelined and parallel processing architecture and proposed design is modeled using Verilog and synthesized using Xilinx ISE and targeted to implement on Virtex-5 FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array).

Computationally efficient implementation of different image processing and analysis algorithms is crucial in many modern real world applications. Several modern visual analytics applications involve processing large amounts of compressed image/video data on restricted hardware resources, in a numerically efficient manner. In this context, the formulation of some image analysis/processing algorithms in the compressed image/video domain can bring significant benefits in the computational complexity reduction. An important step to image analysis, feature extraction, based on unitary image transforms is addressed in this paper, in a general form. Starting from the fact that in most popular video compression the intraframes are block discrete cosine transform (DCT) encoded, we present and propose a solution to computing any unitary image transform at pixels block level, starting from the DCT coefficients of the block. Since approximate forms of the transforms are often satisfactory, we propose a fuzzy logic system based approach to optimize the computational complexity with minimal loss of image information. The method is exemplified for the case of the Walsh transform, which shows that even the fastest implementation provides (by reconstruction) images of good quality.

Human emotions are an important part of our life. We express our feelings through emotions. Recognition and validation of human emotions have become important for improving the overall human computer interaction. Emotion Recognition is a progressive research area and plays an important role in Computer interaction. For any Emotions Recognition, it is necessary to obtain the image features of face that can be used to detect the emotion class. We implement the adaptive sub-layer compensation (ASLC) based facial emotions recognition method for human emotions recognition with various features extraction mechanism. We modify Marr-Hildreth algorithm by using Adaptive sub-layer compensation and hysteresis analysis to minimize negative effects of Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG), such as image degradation, high response to unwanted details in image, and disconnected edge details from given image. We have studied four different features extraction techniques to identify the emotion. The four feature detection mechanisms implemented are Principal Component Analysis, Local Tetra Pattern, Magnitude Pattern and Wavelet features. The emotion class is identified by using the extracted features and K nearest neighbor algorithm. We identify five different emotion classes i.e. Happy, Sad, Neutral, Surprise and Fear. We have used still image database for the experiments and the results gives identification of input into the five different emotion classes i.e. Happy, Sad, Neutral, Surprise and Fear.

In order to improve tunnel in long, narrow tunnel environment flexible robot control and autonomous obstacle avoidance ability, designed the control platform based on ARM, more modular sensor fusion, through WIFI communications and figure and raspberry pie auxiliary control system in the field of image processing, signal processing, robot applied to the tunnel. The control system design, has solved the tunnel under complicated environment communication impeded, the figure is not clear, cannot independent walls and other control problems, at the same time solve the operate of people can be far away from the tunnel environment, the problem of inspection. Robot can be realized for traditional cable tunnel without modification inspection provides the control scheme.

Off-the-shelf accelerator-based embedded platforms offer a competitive energy-efficient solution for lightweight deep learning computations over CPU-based systems. Low-complexity classifiers used in power-constrained and performance-limited scenarios are characterized by operations on small image maps with 2- 3 deep layers and few class labels. For these use cases, we consider a range of embedded systems with 5-20W power budgets such as the Xilinx ZC706 board (with MXP soft vector processor), NVIDIA Jetson TX1 (GPU), TI Keystone II (DSP) as well as the Adapteva Parallella board (custom multi-core with NoC). Deep Learning computations push the capabilities of these platforms to the limit through compute-intensive evaluations of multiple 2D convolution filters per layer, and high communication requirements arising from the movement of intermediate maps across layers. We present CaffePresso, a Caffe-compatible framework for generating optimized mappings of user-supplied ConvNet specifications to target various accelerators such as FPGAs, DSPs, GPUs, RISC-multicores. We use an automated code generation and auto-tuning approach based on knowledge of the ConvNet requirements, as well as platform-specific constraints such as on-chip memory capacity, bandwidth and ALU potential. While one may expect the Jetson TX1 + cuDNN to deliver high performance for ConvNet configurations, (1) we observe a flipped result with slower GPU processing compared to most other systems for smaller embedded-friendly datasets such as MNIST and CIFAR10, and (2) faster and more energy efficient implementation on the older 28nm TI Keystone II DSP over the newer 20nm NVIDIA TX1 SoC in all cases.

In this paper, we design a Deep Dual-Domain (D~3) based fast restoration model to remove artifacts of JPEG compressed images. It leverages the large learning capacity of deep networks, as well as the problem-specific expertise that was hardly incorporated in the past design of deep architectures. For the latter, we take into consideration both the prior knowledge of the JPEG compression scheme, and the successful practice of the sparsity-based dual-domain approach. We further design the One-Step Sparse Inference (1-SI) module, as an efficient and lightweighted feed-forward approximation of sparse coding. Extensive experiments verify the superiority of the proposed D~3 model over several state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, our best model is capable of outperforming the latest deep model for around 1 dB in PSNR, and is 30 times faster.

As FPGA device sizes increase, they offer greater opportunities for on-site data processing, which is potentially useful for reducing the transmission requirements for applications with large data sets. For satellite applications, unlike ASICs, designers also benefit from an FPGA's ability to be reprogrammed to update functionality over the lifetime of a satellite (15+ years) and a mission (often 5+ years), while having significantly lower power costs than GPGPUs or high performance processors. This paper presents the first custom, fully pipelined, adaptable framework for multi-beam Scan Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), the only 24/7 remote sensing imaging system that is capable of producing high-resolution global images in any weather conditions. As high resolution SAR or even low-resolution global-coverage generates on the order of hundreds of Megabytes of raw data per second, onboard SAR processing would reduce this transmitted data by orders of magnitude. Our Scan-mode SAR processor is scalable to different bit-widths and frame-sizes. We are able to process 81×730 frames of 8-bit I-Q channels from each scan (1.4 MB) in less than 1.5 ms, approximately 102 times faster than a corresponding estimated C solution leveraging the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives, and 150 times faster than the corresponding fully vectorized software solution run in MATLAB (6-core, 3.5 Ghz CPU).
