A single hidden layer based Multi-Layered Feedforward Neural Network (MLFFNN) with an input layer and an output layer after appropriate training performs image compression with the hidden layer while the decompression is performed at the output layer with optimum weights and suitable bias values. The computational complexities of multi-layered architecture impose challenges in hardware implementation with the requirement of large number of multipliers, adders and memory elements for computation. Hardware circuits designed to implement Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architectures are referred to as Hardware Neural Networks (HNN). The implementation of HNN offers advantages in terms of area and power. The proposal explains the implementation of FeedForward Neural Network (FFNN) algorithm, and is realized using modified architecture that compresses and decompresses images that are obtained from sub-bands. The modified architecture is implemented using pipelined and parallel processing architecture and proposed design is modeled using Verilog and synthesized using Xilinx ISE and targeted to implement on Virtex-5 FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array).

The evolution of wireless communication protocols drives the quest of power-efficient and flexible computing for embedded DSPs, but popular architectures, very-long-instruction-word (VLIW) and application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP), serve as opposite extreme cases in regard to power-efficiency and flexibility. To this end, we present DeAr: Dual-thread Architecture DSP, which manipulates a multi-banked register file that enables simultaneous multi-threading (SMT), and a transport-triggered bus that exploits the data forwarding mechanism in its compact datapath. We also propose a novel scheduling algorithm which leverages the compact hardware to achieve both high throughput and flexible computation. In the experiment of common DSP kernels, DeAr saves 20.3%-13.1% and 31.8%-2.2% of power dissipation, 36.1%-31.5% and 28.2%-5.7% of area, compared with VLIW and ASIP respectively.

In this paper, we describe a design space exploration (DSE) tool for domain specific reconfigurable computing where the needs of the applications drive the construction of the device architecture. The tool has been developed to automate the design space case studies which allows application developers to explore architectural tradeoffs efficiently and reach solutions quickly. We selected some of the core signal processing benchmarks from the MediaBench benchmark suite and some of the edge-detection benchmarks from the image processing domain for our case studies. We compare the energy consumption of the architecture selected from manual design space case studies with the architectural solution selected by the design space exploration tool. The architecture selected by the DSE tool consumes approximately 9% less energy on an average as compared to the best candidate from the manual design space case studies. The fabric architecture selected from the manual design case studies and the one selected by the tool were synthesized on 130 nm cell-based ASIC fabrication process from IBM. We compare the energy of the benchmarks implemented onto the fabric with other hardware and software implementations. Both fabric architectures (manual and tool) yield energy within 3 X of a direct ASIC implementation, 330 X better than a Virtex-II Pro FPGA and 2016 X better than an Intel XScale processor.

The selective visual attention mechanism in human visual system helps human to act efficiently when dealing with massive visual information. Over the last two decades, biologically inspired attention model has drawn lots of research attention and many models have been proposed. However, the top-down cues in human brain are still not fully understood, which makes top-down models not biologically plausible. This paper proposes an attention model containing both the bottom-up stage and top-down stage for the target detection from SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. The bottom-up stage is based on the biologically-inspired Itti model and is modified by taking fully into account the characteristic of SAR images. The top-down stage contains a novel learning strategy to make the full use of prior information. It is an extension of the bottom-up process and more biologically plausible. The experiments in this research aim to detect vehicles in different scenes to validate the proposed model by comparing with the well-known CFAR (constant false alarm rate) algorithm. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

In this paper, we design a Deep Dual-Domain (D~3) based fast restoration model to remove artifacts of JPEG compressed images. It leverages the large learning capacity of deep networks, as well as the problem-specific expertise that was hardly incorporated in the past design of deep architectures. For the latter, we take into consideration both the prior knowledge of the JPEG compression scheme, and the successful practice of the sparsity-based dual-domain approach. We further design the One-Step Sparse Inference (1-SI) module, as an efficient and lightweighted feed-forward approximation of sparse coding. Extensive experiments verify the superiority of the proposed D~3 model over several state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, our best model is capable of outperforming the latest deep model for around 1 dB in PSNR, and is 30 times faster.

In recent years, deep learning algorithm has been one of the most used method in machine learning. Success rate of the most popular machine learning problems has been increased by using it. In this work, we develop an eye detection method by using a deep neural network. The designed network, which is accepted as an input by Caffe, has 3 convolution layers and 3 max pooling layers. This model has been trained with 16K positive and 52K negative image patches. The last layer of the network is the classification layer which operates a softmax algorithm. The trained model has been tested with images, which were provided on FDDB and CACD datasets, and also compared with Haar eye detection algorithm. Recall value of the method is higher than the Haar algorithm on the two datasets. However, according to the precision rate, the Haar algorithm is successful on FDDB dataset.

image matching is one of the active areas of research in today's world. There exist many ways in which two images can be matched. When the size of the image is very large, it incurs more computational time and cost. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to match large images is proposed. This algorithm works by generating key features using SIFT algorithm. This SIFT features are then clustered using k-means clustering algorithm The output of k-means is then subjected to coupled decomposition phase. This will result in a set sub-images of the original images. Subsequently matching is done by finding the line segments in the corresponding sub-images. If all the sub-images are matching then the two images are considered to be fully matching. In the last part of the paper, the full image matching method is modified so that it can be used to detect partial match as well.

Nodule detection in chest radiographs is a main component of current Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. The problem is usually approached as a supervised classification task of candidate nodule segments. To this end, a discriminative model is learnt from predefined set of features. A key concern with this approach is the fact that some normal tissues are also imaged and these regions can overlap with the lung tissue as to hide the nodules. These overlaps may reduce the discriminative ability of extracted features and increase the number of false positives accordingly. In this study, we offer to learn distinct models for bone and normal tissue regions following to the segmentation of ribs, which are often the major reason for false positives. Thus, the nodule candidates in bone and normal tissue regions can be assessed in context-sensitive way. The experiments on a common benchmark set determine that the proposed approach can significantly rescue the false positives while preserving the sensitivity of detections.

Coordinate Rotational Digital Computer (CORDIC) has been widely used as an iterative algorithm for performing rotations in many digital signal processing (DSP) applications. The CORDIC algorithm is divided into two modes, which are the rotation and vectoring modes. The conventional hardware architecture of CORDIC algorithm has two problems. First, though the computations of both modes are very similar, two separate modules are used in separate hardware architecture. Second, after computations of the whole iterations, an extra scaling operation to make a normalized output has been another computational burden. In this paper, we present a compact multi-mode CORDIC architecture, where both of the rotation and vectoring modes can be performed using a shared hardware architecture. In addition, Global-Shifting-Sum (GSS) approach which uses one adder and one barrel shifter is also proposed to efficiently eliminate the scaling operation of CORDIC. The proposed multi-mode GSS CORDIC is implemented as the iterative cross-folded architecture to minimize the area of CORDIC. The experimental results with 65nm CMOS process show 42% area reduction compared to the conventional two separate hardware architectures of CORDIC with minor degradation in accuracy.

Sophisticated computational imaging algorithms require both high performance and good energy-efficiency when executed on mobile devices. Recent trend has been to exploit the abundant data-level parallelism found in general purpose programmable GPUs. However, for low-power mobile use cases, generic GPUs consume excessive amounts of power. This paper proposes a programmable computational imaging processor with 16-bit half-precision SIMD floating point vector processing capabilities combined with power efficiency of an exposed datapath. In comparison to traditional VLIW architectures with similar computational resources, the exposed datapath reduces the register file traffic and complexity. These and the specific optimizations enabled by the explicit programming model enable extremely good power-performance. When synthesized on a 28nm ASIC technology, the accelerator consumes 71mW of power while running a state-of-the-art denoising algorithm, and occupies only 0.2mm 2 of chip area. For the algorithm, energy usage per frame is 7mJ, which is 10x less than the best found GPU-based implementation.
