In this paper, we develop a sparsity-aware algorithm for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of correlated targets in the context of coprime arrayprocessing. The idea is to iteratively interpolate the observed data to a virtual nonuniform linear array (NLA) in order to raise the degrees of freedom (DOF). We derive the estimation procedures using variational inference for fully Bayesian estimation, where the current parameter estimates are used to interpolate the observed data better and thus increase the likelihood of the next parameter estimates. The novelties of our method lies in its capacity of detecting more correlated sources than the number of physical sensors. Simulated data from coprime arrays are used to illustrate the superior performance of the proposed approach as compared with other state-of-the-art compressed sensing reconstruction algorithms.

The problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of quasi-stationary signals using a nested array in unknown noise field is investigated and two methods based on differencing method and eigenspace are proposed in this paper. Through performing differencing between the virtual received data, the unknown noise component is directly removed from the data model. The resulting data model is then utilized to find out the DOAs of the signals based on the theory of subspace. Thanks to the configuration of the nested array, it can produce large degrees of freedom (DOF) in the virtual sensorarray which provides the virtual received data. These increased DOF can contribute enhanced resolution in DOA estimation. Numerical simulations of DOA estimation exhibit the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we investigate into joint direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar in the presence of gain-phase error and mutual coupling error. An auxiliary sensors-based framework is proposed, the matched array measurement of the MIMO radar is formulated as a parallel factor (PARAFAC) model, which links the problem of joint DOD and DOA estimation to PARAFAC decomposition. Thereafter, the DODs and DOAs are obtained via least square strategy. The proposed method is computationally more efficient than the existing reduced-MUSIC method. Besides, it can achieve closed-form solutions for DODs and DOAs, which are paired automatically. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

A signalprocessing algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival of a harmonic signal using only a single sensor is proposed. The method is based on the recently invented architecture called CAROUSEL, which makes use of the Doppler effect caused by observing signals using the sensor in a circular motion. The proposed method estimates the direction of arrival from the amount of phase shift of a harmonic component caused by the Doppler effect. Simulation using various harmonic signals including synthesised speech phonemes prove the proposed algorithm is able to accurately estimate the direction of arrival of the harmonic signals.

The effect of mutual coupling among the antenna elements will degrade the performance of arraysignalprocessing methods, and hence, mutual coupling calibration has attracted many research interests. However, existing approaches to deal with this problem either require the angular information of the calibration source(s) or require computationally expensive procedures to determine the mutual coupling coefficients. To this end, we propose an efficient method to calibrate the mutual coupling with a single source at unknown location. In particular, by exploiting the fact that mutual coupling is inversely related to their separation and is negligible when they are separated by a few wavelengths and the mutual coupling matrix (MCM) of uniform linear array (ULA) can be approximated as a banded symmetric matrix, it is shown that both the signal direction-of-arrival (DOA) and mutual coupling coefficients can be estimated in closed-form without any spectral grid search. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methods is able to provide promising performance compared with existing approaches.

The main-beam deceptive jamming reduces the estimation precision and tracking accuracy of the target, which brings huge resources consume and severe challenges along with threats. Besides, it is impossible to obtain perfectly orthogonal waveforms for all Doppler and delay pairs in the multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In this paper, based on the frequency diverse array (FDA)-MIMO radar with random polyphase codes, we have addressed the problem of the main-beam range deceptive jamming suppression with two steps. Firstly, the true and false targets are distinguished in the joint transmit-receive spatial frequency domain according to the time delay difference in the false target generation. Subsequently, due to the range mismatch, the main-beam deceptive jamming can be suppressed through a range-angle adaptive matched filter. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

By using simple design examples of a three-element sensorarray coupled with the sensing signals consisting of three well-designed frequencies, we provide insights to achieve a high number of consecutive lags, unique lags, and array aperture. Such multi-frequency sensorarrays with reduced number of sensors can be attractive in many applications to achieve effective sensing with a low cost.
