In the community of evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO), one important issue is the choice of test problems for performance evaluations of EMO algorithms. This is because performance evaluation results of EMO algorithms totally depend on the choice of test problems. This means that the research on new EMO algorithm design is also influenced by the choice of test problems. Recently, researchers have started to use real-world problems for performance evaluation of EMO algorithms. Among them, a real-world problem suite RE has attracted much attention and has been used in many studies. However, most RE problems have been created from real-world constrained problems by using the total constraint violation as an additional objective. That is, the original versions of most RE problems are not unconstrained multi-objective problems. Thus, even when a good solution set is obtained by an EMO algorithm for an RE problem, it can be a poor solution set for its original constrained problem. This is because many well-distributed solutions over the entire Pareto front of the transformed unconstrained problem are usually infeasible solutions of the original constrained problem with some positive total constraint violation values. In this paper, we examine whether good solution sets obtained by EMO algorithms for RE problems are also good solution sets for their original constrained problems. Our experimental results show that good solutions sets for most RE problems include good feasible solution sets for their original constrained problems. However, for a few RE problems, good solution sets obtained by some high performance EMO algorithms do not include good feasible solution sets. Our results show that high-performance EMO algorithms on most RE problems generate good feasible solution sets for their original constrained versions. This observation supports the usefulness of those RE problems as test problems for performance evaluation of EMO algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) have emerged as a promising approach to addressing expensive and black-box problems. Most existing SAEAs leverage regression models to predict the objective values, reducing the use of true objective functions. However, these methods focus on learning the mapping from the decision space to the objective space and may fail to reveal the relationship between solutions in the decision space. Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs) have attracted increased attention due to their powerful ability to expose sample interaction. In this paper, we propose employing a graph neural network for learning embeddings of solutions in the decision space, followed by a classification task aimed at predicting dominance relationships between solutions in the objective space and a regression task for obtaining the estimated fitness values. To this end, we generate a graph at each generation to represent the topology relationship between solutions in the decision space, where nodes represent solutions, and edges are added depending on the Euclidean distances between nodes. In addition, a new acquisition function that adaptively weights the predictions on objective values and dominance relationships is proposed to effectively identify new samples. The performance of the proposed method is examined by extensive empirical studies on a widely used test suite in comparison to its peer algorithms, and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

The results of developing a mathematical model to uniform representation of the problem statement for row of dynamic problems of discrete optimization are presented. The model is applicable for tasks from different subject areas with a similar interpretation in terms of graph theory. The model is designed for solving discrete optimization with the algorithm of agent-based metaheuristics. According to the results of some numerical experiments, collection and analysis of statistical information of application of the bat algorithm in solving dynamic problems of discrete optimization were carried out. Analysis of the obtained statistics is used to identify the characteristics of and rules for setting the bat algorithm.

3D reconstruction of image sequences is an important application in computer graphics and image processing, especially in biomedical engineering. 3D reconstruction of elastin second harmonic generation (SHG) sequences images can offer much more spatial structure information to improve the diagnostic accuracy significantly. In the paper, we designed a reconstruction pipeline of normal scar samples based on three reconstruction algorithms including Marching cubes, Ray casting volume rendering and Contours algorithm and compared their results. The results show that contours algorithm is more effective and has better performance than the other two methods. © 2016 IEEE.

Establishing clear control boundaries between attitude dynamics control systems (ADCS) and autonomous formation flight controls (AFFC) is paramount for small satellite formation flight architecture. The ADCS obtains input data from the controller for guidance, navigation, and control. AFFC has direct control over an actuator and sensors for satellite missions. This paper examines the recent development of miniature AOCS components and control design strategies for both linear and nonlinear and algorithms (propellant optimization, environmental perturbations, trajectory optimization, satellite reconfiguration and planning, attitude determination, orbit correction/prediction, and relative dynamics) to achieve AFF. The results are summarized in the high-level architecture specifications of the individual sensors, actuators, and controllers. In addition, numerical simulation results for the reaction wheel controllers were analysed to determine Euler angles, regulated torques, reaction wheel torque, reaction wheel speed. Furthermore, reduced overall power consumption for the specified (active 4 wheels) maneuver. The proposed quaternion feedback control system model reduces computation time, fuel consumption, and collision avoidance between follow-on satellites. Expression-dag-based number-types are a very general and user-friendly way to achieve exact geometric computation, a widely accepted approach to the reliable implementation of geometric algorithms. Such number-types record the computation history of a numerical value in an expression dag in order to allow for recomputing the value or an approximation of it at a later stage. We describe how to defer dag construction by using error-free transformations into sums of floating-point numbers. We store a limited number of summands in statically allocated memory in order to postpone or avoid dag creation which involves expensive dynamic memory allocations. Furthermore we report on experiments where we compare different implementation strategies of our new approach. The experiments show that for small polynomial expressions typically arising in geometric applications our approach is superior to existing expression-dag-based number-types in the presence of degenerate and nearly degenerate configurations and competitive otherwise.

Shape parameter selection for multi-quadrics function method in solving electromagnetic boundary value problems

Purpose - The multi-quadrics (MQ) function is a kind of radial basis function. And the MQ method has been successfully adopted as a type of meshless method in solving electromagnetic boundary value problems. However, the accuracy of MQ interpolation or solving equations is severely influenced by shape parameter. Thus the purpose of this paper is to propose a case-independent shape parameter selection strategy from the aspect of coefficient matrix condition number analysis. Design/methodology/approach - The condition number of coefficient matrix is investigated. It is shown that the condition number is only a function of shape parameter and MQ node number, and is irrelevant to the interpolated function which means case-independent. The effective condition number which takes into account the interpolated function is introduced. Then, the relation between the relative root mean square error and condition number is analyzed. Three numerical experiments as transmission line, cable channel and grounding metal box model were carried out. Findings - In the numerical experiments, there is an approximate linear relationship between the logarithm of the condition number and shape parameter, an approximate quadratic relationship with node number. And the optimal shape parameter is corresponding to the early stage of condition number oscillation. Originality/value - This paper proposed a case-independent shape parameter selection strategy. For a finite precision computation, the upper limit of the condition number is predetermined. Therefore, the shape parameter can be chosen where condition number oscillates in early stage.

This paper formulates a delay propagation model that estimates total railway line delay as a polynomial function of a single primary delay. The estimate is derived from a finite series of delays over a horizon that spans two dimensions: the length of the railway line and the number of trains in the service plan. The paper shows that the total delay estimate is a cubic relation for small primary delays. A probabilistic approach is presented to combine the total delay functions of primary delays given to different trains. The final estimate is the total delay on railway lines, after a random incident has occurred. The model can be integrated in railway timetable analysis to reduce the number of necessary simulations, and can be used when the computation speed is an issue, such as on-line rescheduling algorithms. The model is demonstrated with an analysis of a Danish suburban railway. © 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In order to predict acoustic radiation from an elastic structure in shallow water, a method based on wave superposition is proposed, in which the free-space Green function is used to match the strength of equivalent sources. Necessary treatment is conducted in order to neglect the effect of sound reflection from boundaries, which makes the method more efficient. Moreover, the method is combined with the sound propagation algorithms to predict the sound radiated from a elastic cylindrical shell in Pekeris waveguide. The cylindrical shell with hemi-cap is taken as an example to illustrate the validity of the proposed method. Numerical simulations show that the proposed method has robust and efficient in computation.

This paper describes a real-time simulation study of conflict resolution in air traffic management where aircraft regularly broadcast their position, heading and speed and the computation of conflict resolution can be either distributed among the aircraft or computed at a single location and broadcast to all aircraft on the network. Communication latency is included in the simulation by two methods. The first is based on TCP/IP message latency over the Internet, while the second uses Iridium satellite data communications, which inherently provide relatively high latencies and communication errors. The architecture of the simulator and the real-time conflict resolution algorithms are described, together with results from simulation studies.
