This year, cscw is coming to Latin America for the first time. In this workshop, we aim to position the region as a common context that brings together students, academics, as well as industry researchers and practitioners interested in studying, designing, developing, deploying, and/or evaluating cscw and social computing technology, addressing challenges either emerging from or impacting Latin America. Previous initiatives have explored or highlighted the potential of Latin America for cscw research, and this one-day workshop seeks to build on that foundation. Our objectives are to: (1) Bring together researchers, practitioners, and students interested in engaging with Latin America through their research and practice;(2) Discuss the opportunities and challenges of conducting cscw research centered on Latin America;(3) Collaboratively mentor emerging projects focused on Latin America;(4) Advance 5-year collaborative research agendas among existing cscw Latin America research groups;and (5) Increase the visibility of Latin American research projects within the broader international cscw community. We will invite senior cscw researchers from Latin America and other regions to discuss the work presented at the event. This workshop seeks to enrich the global conversation on cscw and highlight and strengthen Latin America's unique contributions to this field. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Older adults in China face numerous barriers to physical exercise. Most related studies have focused on environmental and health factors, while the impact of family responsibilities has been overlooked. Through interviews, this paper finds that most older adults bear primary responsibility for raising their grandchildren, sacrificing their free time for exercise. As a result, they desire to exercise but are unable to do so. In response, we propose the Farmily system, targeting preschool grandchildren aged 3 to 7 and grandparents aged 50 to 75. This system assists grandparents in engaging in physical exercise while caregiving by facilitating co-exercise with their grandchildren. We construct a flexible game framework by transforming the grandparent-grandchild relationship from unilateral dominance to bilateral cooperation, as exemplified through a farm game. We hope this system will provide innovative strategies for improving physical exercise among grandparents who care for their grandchildren. © 2024 acm.

Almost thirty years ago, cscw published an article written by Joan Greenbaum detailing how and why cscw should consider the framing of "labor"over "work"in researching and designing information systems [17]. This argument is especially salient in the present day, with the increasing wariness of algorithmically-mediated monitoring, surveillance, automation, and management in work processes. Despite its salience, Greenbaum's paper has had relatively low engagement in cscw so far. As such, this workshop responds to Greenbaum's call-to-action, asking: 1) Where is cscw research now in thinking about "work"vs. "labor"in designing systems? and 2) How can we support emerging cscw scholars in grounding themselves in theories of work that includes - if not centers - a labor-oriented economic frame? Following a Freirean pedagogy model of social action involving a cycle of reflection and action, this workshop will aim to generate a critical consciousness around labor issues in cscw. Ultimately, by crafting individual commitments to labor, this workshop will aim to contribute to a more worker-centered future. © 2023 Owner/Author.

This one-day workshop invites researchers and practitioners to map the human labour, in its sites, categories, and characteristics, in the infrastructuring of AI and algorithmic systems. Our concern is with the broadening of the terms with which we articulate and account for human labour in the AI pipeline. We aim to attend to not only the privileged bodies in the production of AI or the harmed bodies in the witnessing and moderation of its harms, but the constellation of mundane labours that make AI systems work the way they work. We consider this labour across sites - from labelling datasets, to red teaming, to the (inevitable) public perception management - and across categories of work - from knowledge work to emotion work, from bodily work to organisational work. Approaching the AI pipeline both as a site of empirical study and critical scrutiny, this workshop promotes a cscw perspective into the inquiry of the humans, work practices, and politics in the AI pipeline. Taking a reflective turn, the workshop also invites us to consider what we as cscw researchers - one group of humans active at various parts of the AI pipeline - can do and be challenged by through engaging with AI production. © 2024 Owner/Author.

This panel will host a debate about the possible roles of HCI within cscw research. To do so, it assembles five intellectually diverse researchers who contribute to the field of cscw, while taking divergent approaches to incorporating an historicist sensibility in their work, as a matter of design, politics, reflection, or research. Panelists will briefly answer the following prompts: What is history for? What does good historical work look like? And, what is distinct for historicism in cscw? Then, panelists and audience will discuss and compare answers. The goal of the panel is to further hone the discussion and method of historicism, and to invite a wider cross-section of the community of cscw into the conversation. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Collaboration across distances is a core interest in cscw. During the COVID-19 pandemic, most people were forced to work from home, and this long-term change in work conditions revealed both opportunities and challenges that continue to affect the post-pandemic future. While we do not know in which specific ways, we are certain that it will combine analog and digital work practices. Hybrid work consists of both collocated and distributed people whose collaboration is enabled by physical as well as digital artefacts. This PhD research aim to comprehend cooperative engagements across the spectrum of fully collocated and completely virtual, focusing the placement of hybrid work. We study how hybrid work can be conceptualized within the research field of cscw. This conceptual grounding is vital for understanding the extent and implications of hybrid work in designing technologies to support future work practices © 2023 Owner/Author.

COVID-19 lockdowns accelerated user adoption of remote collaboration technologies such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Despite the challenges of working remotely, many knowledge workers still desire the flexibility of hybrid work and its personal benefits allowing for more productive individual work. However, return-to-office (RTO) mandates suggest an inclination that in-office work allows for more productive teamwork. To resolve these conflicting desires, workspace VR was created. Unlike other social telework virtual reality (VR) applications, workspace VR enables uncoordinated, social, collaborative, and productive individual work and teamwork via virtual avatars, workspaces, and integration with user computers. Designed for Meta Quest devices, users can feel like they are working together with others without constraints in workspace VR. © 2023 acm.

Care work, encompassing physical, emotional, and developmental support, is essential yet often undervalued reproductive labour within capitalist systems. Advancements in automation, robotics, AI, and mixed reality are poised to alter care work, raising questions to explore their roles in reshaping caregiving practice, the workforce, workplaces, and ecological care systems. This workshop aims to challenge three dominant narratives surrounding emerging technology and future care work: technology as a solution to the care crisis, aggressive technology investment in the growing care economy, and overlook of the "end of (care) jobs"in post-work discourse. Drawing on cscw and HCI research, this workshop investigates the complex sociotechnical ecologies of care, envisioning future scenarios through participatory speculative design. By fostering dialogue among diverse participants, the workshop aims to explore the potential impacts of emerging technologies on care work, with a focus on holistic employee wellbeing, worker rights, equity, ethical integration, and socio-economic dynamics. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Historically, the Black church has played a pivotal role in civic engagement and social justice, and continues to do so today. Yet, few researchers have explored how decisions around technology use are made in the church. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with five Black church leaders to understand how church leaders interact with digital technologies, both in general and specifically with the communities that they serve. We found that while Black Church leaders are eager to engage with technology, most of the engagement with outside communities is through in-person contact;opportunities to give online have a financial penalty in comparison to traditional methods of tithing and donating;lastly, technology use within outreach and ministries is highly dependent by ministry leaders - many whom volunteer their time. We contribute to research that focuses on technology use in religious organizations and community engagement of community-based organizations. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Hospital teachers are state-employed educators who provide K-12 instruction to children in the hospital. We conducted research to understand how technology is used in hospital classrooms, an area which has been relatively underexplored. We conducted semi-structured interviews with five hospital teachers to understand their experience of using technology in and outside the classroom. Our findings revealed that hospital teachers often rely on older curricula given the changing education atmosphere;learning is often assessed through in-classroom observations of mastery;and technology and internet use by students is often restricted, which may inhibit opportunities to use AI and other technical resources in the classroom. We contribute a deeper understanding of technology use in the hospital classroom. © 2024 Owner/Author.
