Authority as an Interactional Achievement: Exploring Deference to Smart Devices in Hospital-Based Resuscitation

Over the years, healthcare has been an important domain for cscw research. One significant theme carried through this body of work concerns how hospital workers coordinate their work both spatially and temporally. Much has been made of the coordinative roles played by the natural rhythms present in hospital life, and by webs of mundane artefacts such as whiteboards, post-it notes and medical records. This paper draws upon the coordinating role of rhythms and artefacts to explore the nested rhythms of the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) protocol conducted to restore the proper heart rhythm in a patient who has suffered a cardiac arrest. We are interested in how the teams delivering CPR use various 'smart' assistive devices. The devices contain encoded versions of the CPR protocol and are able to sense (in a limited way) the situation in order to give instructions or feedback to the team. Using an approach informed by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EM/CA) we analysed video of trainee nurses using these devices as they delivered CPR in dramatized training scenarios. This analysis helped us to understand concepts such as autonomy and authority as interactional accomplishments, thus filling a gap in cscw literature, which often glosses over how authority is formed and how it is exercised in medical teams. It also helps us consider how to respond to devices that are becoming more active in that they are being increasingly imbued with the ability to sense, discriminate and direct activity in medical settings.

To solve the problem that network services provided by ships can’t distinguish different users and the Quality of Service (QoS) is poor, an intelligent shipborne terminal system which combines advanced positioning technology and wireless communication technology is designed in this paper. The overall design of the system including hardware design and software design is proposed. The test results show that the system can distinguish between different users’ Wi-Fi connection, intelligentize the management of system users, realizes the function of GPS positioning navigation and has a rich local resource storage, which all proved its good application value. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2018.

Design is often done by teams of designers and other stakeholders. Design also creates a time-lapsed collaborative relationship between designer(s) and user(s), who "complete the design through use". The intentions of designers in designing and crafting computational artifacts are therefore important for multiple HCI and cscw related research and design traditions, including (a) appropriation studies, (b) participatory design, (c) design criticism, and (d) design collaborations in organizational contexts. All of these design philosophies handle intentions differently, including normative, organizational, and ethical aspects of what designers and designs 'should' intend. Some people consider intentions to be highly important, and demand explicit articulations of intentions;some people question whether we give the wrong kind of weight to designers' intentions. With this panel, we will bring these notions to the discussion table to allow a deeper understanding of the diverse theoretical perspectives and research methods available to account for designers' intentions. This will help to theorize design as a social activity, and to understand how people negotiate, evolve, and change designs over the lifecycle of a product or a system. This panel opens a conversation, comprising multiple perspectives, to help HCI and cscw develop new ways to consider designers' intentions from an empirical and theoretical perspective. © Ecscw 2017 - Proceedings of the 15th European conference on computer supported cooperative work. Multilingual teams often include subgroups of members who share a native language different from the team's common language. Linguistic choices by members of these subgroups can have implications for information exchange at the team level. We reported a field study of language use in 3 multilingual teams, each of which consisted of some native English speakers (NS) and some non-native English speakers (NNS) who shared a native language with at least one other team member. We found that NNS often shifted between English and their native language. The way language shift happened differed for formal meetings, informal conversations, and instant messaging. Language variation was often associated with shifts in content, participants, and communication medium. Further analysis indicated that language shift had both benefits and costs for team communication, depending on the context in which it happened. Based on these findings, we outline suggestions for designing multilingual collaboration systems.

The main goal of my research project is to investigate the social and technological conditions for infrastructuring computer-supported collaboration with the aim to enhancing the life condition of low-income people living on Madeira island. The idea underpinning the project is to foster the connection between high and low-skilled people, trying to find common interests that could lead them to collaborate with mutual advantages. The objective of the resulting ICT tool is to provide those usually considered merely as "low-skilled" with the opportunity to take advantage of their practical skills and informal knowledge. They will benefit from the process of re-Thinking their abilities, from the possibility to interact with people belonging to other social networks and from discovering the possibilities provided by technology in terms of communication and organization. © Ecscw 2017 - Proceedings of the 15th European conference on computer supported cooperative work. Given a large graph, such as social network, how to determine set of vertices should we protect given the k budget such that the percentage of vertices that remain uninfected at the end of infection propagation is maximized? Considering the intricacy of this problem and the requirement of scalability, the existing methods are not scalable. On the other hand, the connections among vertices in many real world contagions are usually not solely binary entities (either present or not) but have associated magnitudes and directions. We formulate the flow-aware vertex protection (FAVP) problem to elaborate more efficient and realistic way to prevent infection spreading in graphs by protecting a set of vertices. We also demonstrate that the FAVP problem is NP-Hard. Finally, we propose an efficient and scalable algorithm, called GraphShield by taking into account the role of infection flow, graph connectivity, and outdegree centrality. Experimental results on many real network datasets show that the GraphShield outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms regarding both effectiveness and efficiency. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

To cope with the increasing information in sensor networks, distributed cooperative computing is used, to exchange and utilize the data. However, the data in each specific sensor network is heterogeneous with specific formats and semantics. Thus, it is a huge conundrum to integrate, share and interoperate these sub sensor networks. To solve the above problem, a real-time novel Distributed cooperative model for Isomerism Multi-Sensor network (DCIMS), is proposed in this paper. The DCIMS architecture is based on distributed cooperative data caching and forwarding, which can handle massive, semantic and real-time data stream at each Sensor Gateway node. A new filtering algorithm named Post-Tree-Automata filter (PTAfilter) is proposed based on unranked tree automata and suffix technologies. The proposed filter can process real-time XML streaming (which contains uncertain semantic elements), and understand more complex subscription structures. Both simulation results and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the proposed method improves the query speed, reduces redundant transmission intermediate states.

This paper studies the large scale frequency assignment problem (FAP) in TD-SCDMA network of mobile communications industry in China. The problem considers finding the optimal frequency allocation scheme for carriers with a limited frequency resource in a fast time, such that the entire network interference is minimized. Furthermore, the allocation of frequencies needs to satisfy some constraints to avoid the effect of call interference within the same cell or adjacent cell. Given the formula for calculation of the network interference, we take the FAP as a constrained optimization problem and propose a cooperative co-evolutionary hyper-heuristic genetic algorithm (CC-HHGA) to optimize the assignment of frequencies. In this algorithm, the whole problem is divided into many sub-problems and each sub-problem is dealt with HHGA in parallel. Intensive experiments have been conducted on a real instance of TD-SCDMA network, and the obtained solutions show low interference, robustness and high utilization efficiency of frequencies, thus it is a high quality solution.

Online social media provide a platform for rapid network propagation of information at an unprecedented scale. In this paper, we study the evolution of information cascades in Twitter using a point process model of user activity. Twitter is rich with heterogenous information on users and network structure. We develop several Hawkes process models considering various properties of Twitter including conversational structure, users’ connections and general features of users including the textual information, and show how they are helpful in modeling the social network activity. Evaluation on Twitter data sets shows that incorporating richer properties improves the performance in predicting future activity of users and memes. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.
