Online social media provide a platform for rapid network propagation of information at an unprecedented scale. In this paper, we study the evolution of information cascades in Twitter using a point process model of user activity. Twitter is rich with heterogenous information on users and network structure. We develop several Hawkes process models considering various properties of Twitter including conversational structure, users’ connections and general features of users including the textual information, and show how they are helpful in modeling the social network activity. Evaluation on Twitter data sets shows that incorporating richer properties improves the performance in predicting future activity of users and memes. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

This paper presents HERO, a system for accelerating high performance data center applications by integrating hybrid electrical and optical multicast. We built a prototype and developed a flow-level simulator to evaluate the performance of HERO. Experiment and simulation results show that HERO reduces the average MFCT by ∼32% and∼28% compared to OCS and EPS multicast, respectively. © 2017 acm.

Localization' is one of the most important technologies in wireless sensor networks. Range-free node localization method earned much focuses due to its low deployment overhead. The traditional node localization schemes consider the locations of anchors are reliable, which makes these schemes are invalid in some scenarios with unreliable anchors such as drifted anchors, fake anchors and malicious anchors. Aiming at solving this problem mentioned above, a distributed node Reliable Location Framework (RLF) is proposed. RLF extends the applicability of traditional range-free localization method as an underlying technic. RLF constructs a distributed reputation model of node location to verify the location of each node. In addition, after filtering out those unreliable anchors RLF conquers the problem of anchor lacking by promoting some temporal anchors. Experiments show that RLF yields relative high detection performance and re-localization accuracy. And it processes practicability and ubiquity.

One of the most shared content in social Media (SM) is text, making it vulnerable to copy and authorship misappropriation. Due to the low data noise, watermark embedding is very hard. This problem is exacerbated in the context of SM, where the amount of data in a single message can be extremely small, like in Twitter. Firstly, in this paper we investigate whether SM do applies watermarks on the texts. Then, we propose a text watermarking method able to work on all the SM platforms considered, while ensuring visual indistinguishability and length preservation of the original text and robustness to copy and paste. We conduct an extended evaluation on eighteen different SM platforms by using 6,000 posts from six public figures’ profiles. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Controllers in cyber-physical systems integrate a design-time behavioral model of the system under design to improve their own quality. In the state-of-the-art control designs, behavioral models of other interacting neighbor systems are also integrated to form a centralized behavioral model and to enable a system-level optimization and control. Although this ideal embedded control design may result in pareto-optimal solutions, it is not scalable to larger number of systems. Moreover, the behavior of the multi-domain physical systems may be too complex for a control designer to model and may dynamically change at run time. In this paper, we propose a novel Adaptive and cooperative Quality-Aware (ACQUA) control design which addresses these challenges. In this control design, an ACQUA-based controller for the system under design will monitor the quality of the neighbor systems to dynamically learn their behavior. Therefore, it can quickly adapt its control to cooperate with other neighbor controllers for improving the quality of not only itself, but also other neighbor systems. We apply ACQUA to design a cooperative controller for automotive navigation system, motor control unit, and battery management system in an electric vehicle. We use this automotive example to analyze the performance of the design. We show that by using our ACQUA control, we can reach up to 86% improvements achievable by an ideal embedded control design such that energy consumption reduces by 18% and battery capacity loss decreases by 12% compared to the state-of-the-art on average. © 2017 IEEE.

Superior power density, high efficiency and excellent controllability contribute to interior permanent magnet synchronous machine(IPMSM) research hot issue. With high performance computing and digital signal processing, the extended Kalman filter(EKF) speed estimation can offer accurate online prediction and correction of speed in discrete system. However, based on speed estimation, 0 d i field-oriented field control strategy ignores the use of reluctance torque of IPMSM. Consequently, this paper proposes an EKF-LQR-based cooperative control scheme. It exploits accurate speed estimation with EKF and better stability with LQR. In detail, online EKFLQR controller shows complementary features, where outer-loop achieves high dynamic speed estimation and inner-loop completes good transition. In the end, the methodology is simulated and validated to have high dynamics and self-adaptation. © 2017 acm.

Tremendous increase in the usage of mobile devices and interconnected social networking applications have brought privacy concerns for the end users. The privacy concerns in Online social Networks (OSN) can be addressed with decentralized architectures where users directly interact with their peers. The distributed OSN platforms remove central authorities from the networked systems as users share their content only with intended peers through mobile devices. In a decentralized architecture, efficient sharing and timely access of objects play a vital role especially in interactive systems. In this study, we analyze content dissemination in decentralized OSNs. Measuring interactions in friend circle of 16 users red, which contain a total of 3,539 users, in detail, we analyze efficient approaches to locate online friends and exchange data efficiently and overhead with cloud-backed decentralized OSNs. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Population control policies are proposed and in some places employed as a means towards curbing population growth. This paper is concerned with a disturbing side-effect of such policies, namely, the potential risk of societal fragmentation due to changes in the distribution of family sizes. This effect is illustrated in some simple settings and demonstrated by simulation. In addition, the dependence of societal fragmentation on family size distribution is analyzed. In particular, it is shown that under the studied model, any population control policy that disallows families of 3 or more children incurs the possible risk of societal fragmentation. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.
