This overview presents the mid stages of my doctoral research-based on ethnographic work conducted in IT companies in India and in Denmark-on collaborative work within global software development ( GSD). In the following I briefly introduce how this research seeks to spark a debate in cscw by challenging contemporary ideals about software development outsourcing through the exploration of the multiplicities and asymmetric dynamics inherent in the collaborative work of GSD.

This research demonstrates how government information workers employed different communication strategies through social media after a mass-causality event. Effectively using social media for some government functions may blur the lines between official work and the personal boundaries of government workers, thus raising privacy concerns for government employees.

Based on ethnographic data collected at a global architecture firm over a one-year period, we describe the ways in which drawings are strategically created and curated by architects in an attempt to carefully craft their interactions and fulfill specific intentions with clients and contributors. We identify three strategies used by architects when creating drawings and reveal that the way these strategies are employed depends on the intended purpose of each drawing with a specific set of actors. This work builds on existing literature on the role of objects, such as drawings, for work across organizational boundaries and professional disciplines. We conclude with implications for cscw and propose ideas for approaches and applications that better support cross-boundary and highly visual work involving multiple sets of actors and artifacts.

Practice-based cscw research is an orientation towards empirically-grounded research embracing particular methodological approaches with the aim of creating new theory about work, collaboration, and cooperative technologies. While practice-based cscw research has several strong roots in both North America and Europe: Ecscw and Europe remain central to this tradition. In this panel we will discuss the practice-based research approach asking questions such as: What is the nature of Practice-based computer supported cooperative work research? How is it different from other cscw research approaches? What is the relationship between these traditions in terms of conceptual approaches, methodologies and open questions for future research? This panel will discuss openly the diversity and commonalities between different cscw traditions-and argue that practice-based cscw research is not something that happens only at Ecscw. Ecscw is not a geographical boundary for a certain type of research-but rather a place for a specific research tradition and approach with links to many academic places in the world.

As an important privacy information1, gender inference task has been cause for concern. Previous studies have focused on feature extraction based on the user’s profile and publication and ignored the influence of the privacy information exposed by users when posting messages on gender inference. Thus, we present a new content-based feature, publishing source feature, and design a new weight calculation method for this feature. By experiments, the validity of the feature was proved. In addition, different supervised and semi-supervised approaches including linear support vector machine, Naïve Bayes, Tri-Training and so on. An approach based on linear support vector machine performed best, returning the correct gender for about 85% of the users. © 2017 Association for computing Machinery.

Face-to-face social interactions among strangers today are becoming increasingly rare as people turn towards computer-mediated networking tools. Today's tools, however, are based on the following assumptions: increased information encourages interaction, profiles are good representations of users to other users, and computer-mediated communications prior to face-to-face meetings lead to better outcomes. This paper describes CommonTies, a gentle technological nudge in the form of a wearable accessory, that encourages immediate, face-to-face, organic social interactions among strangers at conferences. By not exposing any profile information, CommonTies preserves an element of mystery and enables self-disclosure of information through conversation. We evaluate our system through a field study at a three-day research conference - cscw 2014. We find that despite our information-scarce design, users were willing to interact with strangers and 74% of the interactions initiated by CommonTies were reported as novel and useful.

This workshop provides opportunities for community building and in-depth discussion of research directions on the "sharing economy" within cscw. The workshop is structured around reviewing work done so far on sharing/platform economies, thinking through how that body of research fits together with longstanding cscw concerns, and working toward a shared research agenda. The workshop's theme is the future of platforms as sites of work, collaboration and trust. We will explore how this new domain of research could help shift forward broader conceptual and theoretical efforts within cscw, and how, on the other hand, we might more effectively utilize prior work to inform our research agenda and efforts in this emerging sub-area of cscw. Our one-day workshop is led by four researchers and supported by an international program committee. It will accommodate up to 25 participants.

Situation reports, or sitreps, are documents commonly used by UN agencies and humanitarian NGOs involved in emergency response to disseminate information to and from relief workers in the field. This paper analyzes the information labor involved in producing sitreps, and how it can be used to understand why these documents are described by insiders as "fundamentally confused." Drawing from document analysis and interviews with over one hundred people involved with sitreps, we examine humanitarian information labor in a decentralized, hierarchical, collaborative, political, and competitive work environment. From an empirical perspective, we contribute to cscw by adding a case study about the situated practice of making humanitarian information, which includes our work as researcher/consultants in reconstructing the details of information gathering and sharing processes in order to improve them. We consider how the work of producing humanitarian information reproduces problematic humanitarian logics.

New information technologies are changing the way science is done. Programs like Zooniverse, ***, and SciStarter demonstrate the power of recruiting online volunteers as participants and contributors to research. Platforms like Project Implicit and Volunteer Science confirm that a wide range of social scientific research can be conducted with volunteers in online laboratories. This demonstration will enable attendees of cscw 2016 a chance to interact with the Volunteer Science system by participating in experiments, browsing the experiment creation platform, and discuss online experiments with the designers and developers of the system.

In 3D NoC-based many-core systems, DRAM accesses behave differently due to their different communication distances and the latency gap of different DRAM accesses becomes bigger as the network size increases, which leads to unfair DRAM access performance among different nodes. This phenomenon may lead to high latencies for some DRAM accesses that become the performance bottleneck of the system. The paper addresses the DRAM access fairness problem in 3D NoC-based many-core systems by narrowing the latency difference of DRAM accesses as well as reducing the maximum latency. Firstly, the latency of a round-trip DRAM access is modeled and the factors causing DRAM access latency difference are discussed in detail. Secondly, the DRAM access fairness is further quantitatively analyzed through experiments. Thirdly, we propose to predict the network latency of round-trip DRAM accesses and use the predicted round-trip DRAM access time as the basis to prioritize the DRAM accesses in DRAM interfaces so that the DRAM accesses with potential high latencies can be transferred as early and fast as possible, thus achieving fair DRAM access. Experiments with synthetic and application workloads validate that our approach can achieve fair DRAM access and outperform the traditional First-Come-First-Serve (FCFS) scheduling policy and the scheduling policies proposed by reference [7] and [24] in terms of maximum latency, Latency Standard Deviation (LSD)1 and speedup. In the experiments, the maximum improvement of the maximum latency, LSD, and speedup are 12.8%, 6.57%, and 8.3% respectively.
