Constrained community detection is a kind of community detection taking given constraints into account to improve the accuracy of community detection. Optimizing constrained Hamiltonian is one of the methods for constrained community detection. Constrained Hamiltonian consists of Hamiltonian which is generalized modularity and constrained term which takes given constraints into account. Nakata proposed a method for constrained community detection in monoplex networks based on the optimization of constrained Hamiltonian by extended Louvain method. In this paper, we propose a new method for constrained community detection in multiplex networks. Multiplex networks are the combinations of multiple individual networks. They can represent temporal networks or networks with several types of edges. While optimizing modularity proposed by Mucha et al. is popular for community detection in multiplex networks, our method optimizes the constrained Hamiltonian which we extend for multiplex networks. By using our proposed method, we successfully detect communities taking constraints into account. We also successfully improve the accuracy of community detection by using our method iteratively. Our method enables us to carry out constrained community detection interactively in multiplex networks. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

In order to solve the problem of mileage anxiety and improve the utilization rate of existing charging stations, we propose a charging strategy based on Distributed cooperative Charging Strategy of Electric Vehicles with Reservation (DCCSR) in this paper. Firstly, a Reservation-Based PULLMode Communication model (R-PULL) is proposed, in which the charging station information distribution and charging reservation can be performed real-time through the opportunistic communication between the on-the-move vehicle to the road side unit (V2R). And then the coordination of the charging station and electric vehicles is achieved. Then, the Algorithm of Available Charge Time Prediction, Algorithm of Waiting Time Prediction and Algorithm of Trip Duration Prediction are proposed and they can be used to realize the optimization strategy of multi-factor charging station in two aspects: duration, distance. Finally, a distributed electric vehicle charging scheduling platform is built and the DCCSR charging strategy is realized. Through the simulation experiment, the proposed strategy has advantages in terms of vehicle charging waiting time and charging station utilization balance.

social networking sites (SNSs) offer users a platform to build and maintain social connections. Understanding when people feel comfortable sharing information about themselves on SNSs is critical to a good user experience, because self-disclosure helps maintain friendships and increase relationship closeness. This observational research develops a machine learning model to measure self-disclosure in SNSs and uses it to understand the contexts where it is higher or lower. Features include emotional valence, social distance between the poster and people mentioned in the post, the language similarity between the post and the community and post topic. To validate the model and advance our understanding about online self-disclosure, we applied it to de-identified, aggregated status updates from Facebook users. Results show that women self-disclose more than men. People with a stronger desire to manage impressions self-disclose less. Network size is negatively associated with self-disclosure, while tie strength and network density are positively associated. © 2016 acm.

New information technologies allow for new modes of data collection, provide unparalleled computational resources, and facilitate long-distance collaboration. Programs like Galaxy Zoo, Fold. It, and ReCAPTCHA demonstrate the power of recruiting online volunteers as participants and contributors to research. Platforms like Project Implicit, SciStarter, and Volunteer Science confirm that a wide range of social scientific research can be conducted with volunteers in online laboratories. This workshop will explore the opportunities, challenges, and limitations of online experiments and build a community of scholars performing online experiments. A group of scholars with wide-ranging experience in this area will discuss existing and emerging approaches to online experimentation. Participants will learn about designing and running online studies, and recruiting and managing subjects. Participants will then be given access to the Volunteer Science research platform (***) where they will work with researchers to develop, test, and deploy their own online studies.

Currently, the de facto representational choice for networks is graphs which capture pairwise relationships between entities. This dyadic approach fails to adequate capture the array of group relationships that are more than the sum of their parts and prevalent in real-world situations. For example, collaborative teams, wireless broadcast, and political coalitions all contain unique group dynamics that need to be captured. In this paper, we use simplicial complexes to model these supra-dyadic relationships in networks. We argue that a number of problems within social and communications networks such as network-wide broadcast and collaborative teams can be elegantly captured using simplicial complexes in a way that is not possible with graphs. In this study, we operationalize several types of simplicial complexes in an online-based experiment using the Wildcat Wells paradigm. We then run subjects in these experiments to investigate measures of team strength and hub behavior using simplicial complex models.

Group activities that use Google Docs for simultaneous collaborative writing and editing are increasingly common in higher education. Although studies show that synchronous collaboration can bring multiple benefits, such as enhanced productivity and writing quality, little is known about these writing practices in classrooms and their impact on students' writing. Using a mixed method approach, we conducted an empirical study that explores the different styles of synchronous collaboration in 45 Google Docs documents produced by 82 undergraduate students, and how students' practices affect the specific dimensions of the final text including quality. The results suggest that (a) out of four styles, Divide and Conquer style tended to produce better quality text whereas Main Writer had the lowest quality scores, and that (b) balanced participation and amount of peer editing led to longer texts with higher quality scores for content, evidence, but not organization or mechanics. Given these results, we suggest several design features for collaborative writing systems and propose guidelines for instructional practices.

"Reply" and "Reply All" buttons in email provide the convenience of a quick reply to those included in the email. Yet this very convenience can be troublesome to both the individual and the group involved if receivers intentionally or unintentionally hit one button instead of the other. In this paper we explore how replying decisions are made and what contributes to erroneous use of Reply All through an experimental study (N=109) and a survey study (N=112). Data from the experiment suggest that errors are not influenced by how the reply button suite is arranged but rather by the explicitness of the desired response action and how multiple recipients are displayed. Qualitative data from the survey suggest that while people are cognizant of Reply All misuse, lack of universally agreed upon criteria for appropriate Reply/Reply All choice leads to errors. We discuss the implications of these insights for email interface design.

Towards efficient team formation for crowdsourcing in non-cooperative social networks

Crowdsourcing has become a popular service computing paradigm for requesters to integrate the ubiquitous human-intelligence services for tasks that are difficult for computers but trivial for humans. This paper focuses on crowdsourcing complex tasks by team formation in social networks (SNs) where a requester connects to a large number of workers. A good indicator of efficient team collaboration is the social connection among workers. Most previous social team formation approaches, however, either assume that the requester can maintain information of all workers and can directly communicate with them to build teams, or assume that the workers are cooperative and be willing to join the specific team built by the requester, both of which are impractical in many real situations. To this end, this paper first models each worker as a selfish entity, where the requester prefers to hire inexpensive workers that require less payment and workers prefer to join the profitable teams where they can gain high revenue. Within the non-cooperative SNs, a distributed negotiation-based team formation mechanism is designed for the requester to decide which worker to hire and for the worker to decide which team to join and how much should be paid for his skill service provision. The proposed social team formation approach can always build collaborative teams by allowing team members to form a connected graph such that they can work together efficiently. Finally, we conduct a set of experiments on real dataset of workers to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. The experimental results show that our approach can 1) preserving considerable social welfare by comparing the benchmark centralized approaches and 2) form the profitable teams within less negotiation time by comparing the traditional distributed approaches, making our approach a more economic option for real-world applications. © 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. As in all collaborative work, trust is a vital ingredient of successful computer supported cooperative work, yet there is little in the way of design principles to help practitioners develop systems that foster trust. To address this gap, we present a set of design patterns, based on our experience designing systems with the explicit intention of increasing trust between stakeholders. We contextualize these patterns by describing our own learning process, from the development, testing and refinement of a trust model, to our realization that the insights we gained along the way were most usefully expressed through design patterns. In addition to a set of patterns for trust, this paper seeks to demonstrate of the value of patterns as a means of communicating the nuances revealed through ethnographic investigation.

As the nature of virtual work changes, so must our understanding of important processes such as conflict. The present study examines conflict in ongoing virtual teams by situating itself in the context of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) development. A series of semi-structured interviews with diverse representatives of the FOSS community highlight differences in the way conflict occurs. Specifically, a transformation of conflict types is observed together with a form of conflict previously unidentified in work on virtual teams. Findings suggest that the changing structure of ongoing virtual teams has important consequences for team processes like conflict.
