The evolving philosophies, methods, and products of cscw design research are more collaborative and value-active than ever. Researchers and participants may co-construct designs, thus sharing power;they may share intimate life stories over design probes, thus pushing socio-cultural boundaries;they may seek personal fulfillment through the products or the process. How do these experiences affect researcher and co-creator identity in the moment of co-work? How do these changes reconfigure other relationships and encounters? This workshop invites discussants from across disciplines to consider phenomenological aspects of identity-making and to unpack ethical dilemmas that arise when we appreciate the potential for design research itself to significantly harm or help participants. At stake are cscw policies, best practices, and collective understandings of what it means to be a design researcher.

Goal progress logging and social feedback have been shown to motivate individuals to achieve their goals. However little controlled study has been done to evaluate the relative effects of these features. We developed a simple goal achievement application, Achieve, to examine the effects of progress logging and social feedback on goal completion. Results of an in-progress study suggest that both progress logging and social feedback had positive effects on goal completion. However, surprisingly, social feedback has no significant advantage over progress logging. Further, participants who gave and received social feedback had a higher level of annoyance toward the study. We discuss possible reasons for this and propose insights for adding social components to goal achievement systems.

A confluence of factors has enabled the explosion of technology startups worldwide. The global spread of seed accelerators, incubators which foster high-tech startups, are a major component of this. But little is known about how they are impacting the global technology landscape. Through fieldwork with accelerators in Southeast Asia and Latin America and broad-based research with other accelerators in developed and emerging markets, I propose to investigate the expansion of this Silicon Valley model of innovation, how it is transformed and implemented in other contexts, and the impact it has on the types of technologies created and the growth of ecosystems.

Patient-provider collaboration is considered crucial to successful patient care. However, while many cscw and health informatics studies have focused on collaborative care incorporating patient awareness in chronic care management, very little attention has been given to emergency care. I am conducting a qualitative study of patient care trajectories in an emergency department (ED), examining patient awareness, decision-making and patient-clinician interaction in an information-imbalanced environment, particularly in situations of information deprivation. My research will enrich understandings of collaborative care practices in a hospital setting and can inform extended designs of the current provider-centric, socio-technical systems to incorporate patient-provider collaboration.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive and in-depth study on convergence preservation and avoidance in Operational Transformation (OT) systems. In this study, we discovered basic conditions, transformation patterns, and mechanisms for avoiding Convergence Property 2 (CP2), and established CP2-avoidance correctness of seven major OT systems. Fur-thermore, we proposed improvements to existing systems and designed a new OT system capable of avoiding CP2 with a unique combination of novel features. These results con-tribute significantly to the advancement of OT and collabora-tion-enabling technology. Copyright © 2014 acm.

The wealth of resources online has empowered individuals and businesses with an unprecedented volume of information to aid in decision making processes. However, finding the many details needed for a non-trivial decision can be very labor-intensive. We present AskSheet, a general system that leverages human computation to acquire the inputs to an arbitrary decision spreadsheet provided by the user. The key innovation is the ability to prioritize the inputs by analyzing the user's spreadsheet formulas to calculate value of information for each of the blanks. By directing workers to find the details that impact the end result most, it results in a conclusive decision without gathering all of the inputs. Copyright © 2014 acm.

Most people associate with people like themselves, a process called homophily. Exposure to diversity, however, makes us more informed as individuals and as a society. In this paper, we investigate political disagreements on Facebook to explore the conditions under which diverse opinions can coexist online. Via a mixed methods approach comprising 103 survey responses and 13 interviews with politically engaged American social media users, we found that participants who perceived more differences with their friends engaged less on Facebook than those who perceived more homogeneity. Weak ties were particularly brittle to political disagreements, despite being the ties most likely to offer diversity. Finally, based on our findings we suggest potential design opportunities to bridge across ideological difference: 1) support exposure to weak ties;and 2) make common ground visible while friends converse. My research interest is in the embodiment of community and personal values in knowledge organization systems. My dissertation research examines how classification workers make decisions in the context of conflicting user needs, author intent, and ethical implications. I am taking an ethnographic approach as a participant observer in a volunteer team of classification workers who create a "curated folksonomy" by linking together user-generated tags, and am planning interviews and comparison cases. By examining in detail the daily decisions made by classification workers, we can better understand the possibilities for the design of systems that embody values.

E-books are becoming ubiquitous. Whether or not they will eventually replace books or merely complement them, there is a concern that something important might be lost in moving from print to digital books. While there is a wealth of research into the challenges and opportunities of e-reading, there is little research aiming to understand the broader role of books in everyday life. Rather than speculating on what books are in the digital age, in this paper, we wish to ask what books do. To do so, we conducted a series of in-depth interviews with ten UK households to understand everyday uses of books. Our findings suggest that books are not merely reading technologies but a resource for everyday social and personal engagements. We discuss re-framing books as social technologies and implications for the design of e-books. Copyright © 2014 acm.

Infrastructure makes it easier, faster or possible for investigators to study objects of research. It does so by making available consistent and stable resources and services such as data, collaboration tools, sites of sample collection, or calibrated instruments. This paper offers the concept of the kernel of a research infrastructure as a new unit of analysis for investigating the enabling capacities of infrastructure. The kernel is the core resources and services an infrastructure makes available (called the cache), as well as the work, techniques and technologies that go into sustaining that availability (called addressing). By inspecting and comparing the kernel of two long-term scientific enterprises, this paper demonstrates how focusing on the kernel can help explain key qualities of research infrastructure such as flexibility and persistence in the face of dramatic changes to the objects, methods and practice of science.
