The aim of this study is to investigate the organizational dynamics occurring in a multiplayer video game. The research involves E-sports professionals, streamers, and amateur players, who have different motives for playing and represent different "work-play"conditions, and explores how they differently enact organizational behaviors in the game. An ethnographic study within an Italian gaming community is currently in progress. I focus on "Call of Duty: Warzone", a First-Person Shooter Battle Royale game which requires players to enact organizational efforts in order to reach the in-game objectives (e.g., defeat the enemy team). The study uses i) semi-structured interviews with amateur players and participant observation conducted in the game environment played by the amateurs, ii-iii) observation of gaming sessions, analysis of online content and semi-structured interviews with reference to streamers and professionals, iv) analysis of communication exchanges of all three types of players during the gaming sessions. I expect that players belonging to different categories will enact distinct organizational behaviors and give rise to various organizational structures. A cross-comparison between them, which is missing in current literature, would clarify how different modalities of combining work and play impact on organizational behaviors and dynamics. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Our world is now connected and even entangled in unprecedented ways through networked technologies. Yet pockets of unequal connectivity persist, and technical infrastructures for connectivity remain difficult to design and build even for experts. In this workshop we aim to bring together a global community of multi- and inter-disciplinary researchers and implementers working on infrastructure development and connectivity to explore the existing design challenges and opportunities for bringing technical dimensions of networked infrastructures in conversation with human-computer interaction (HCI) and the social science of infrastructure. We will share, assess and define research problems and resources for rethinking networked infrastructures from human-, community-, and society-centered perspectives, understanding them to be embedded with human values and biases. We particularly intend our collaborative work to support real-world connectivity initiatives, which have grown in critical importance over the pandemic years - especially projects in support of Global South communities. Concrete deliverables from the workshop will include: (1) an initial shared bibliography to help formalize the state of knowledge in our area, (2) an agenda of shared goals, challenges, and intentions in our field, (3) a compilation of resources to support future work, and (4) social and organizing infrastructures for continued communication and academic collaboration. © 2022 Owner/Author.

My dissertation research explores how digital peer-to-peer (P2P) payments (performing one to one online financial transactions via a digital or mobile device) as an emerging financial technology affect people's everyday economic and social lives and seeks to redesign such technology for supporting both secure financial transactions and nuanced social interactions/connections through a sociotechnical approach. Specifically, my goal is to i) reveal and elaborate the multidimensional influences of digital P2P payments on inter-personal relationships in terms of both experiences of financial exchanges and everyday social interactions, ii) redesign and develop prototypes for future digital P2P payments platforms that highlight the importance of the interplay of financial transactions and social engagement. My research will not only contribute to better understanding new and more complicated social phenomena and dynamics emerging in today's digital economy but also benefit the HCI community by informing future research on computer-mediated communication through financial technologies.

Research across political science, communications, sociology, and human-computer interaction has explored howmodern social movements are leveraging technologies and digital tools to mobilize for social change. While mass mobilization has influenced policy, triggered revolutions, and influenced cultures globally, mobilization is just one method of collective action. In contrast, the more structured, relationship-focused practice of community organizing can also enable mass societal change, such as in the US Civil Rights movement and in the development of tech-giant labor unions. While there is exploration into how we might research and design tools informed by organizing, specific frameworks and practices of community organizing - such as the People, Power, Change framework - also must evolve in response to the ever changing landscape of technology in society. In this workshop, we will bring together community organizers, technologists, designers, and researchers to explore what it might mean to organize and center relationships in the modern era with (or without) computer support, in what contexts we should prioritize organizing rather than mobilizing, and how we might iterate upon our existing framework to respond to our findings. We will produce an iterated draft of a traditional organizing framework.

computer-supported cooperativework (cscw) and Human- computer Interaction (HCI) have long studied how technology can support material and relational aspects of care work, typically in clinical healthcare settings. More recently, we see increasing recognition of care work such as informal healthcare provision, child and elderly care, organizing and advocacy, domestic work, and service work. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored long-present tensions between the deep necessity and simultaneous devaluation of our care infrastructures. This highlights the need to attend to the broader social, political, and economic systems that shape care work and the emerging technologies being used in care work. This leads us to ask several critical questions: What counts as care work and why? How is care work (de)valued, (un)supported, or coerced under capitalism and to what end? What narratives drive the push for technology in care work and whom does it benefit? How does care work resist or build resilience against and within oppressive systems? And how can we as researchers advocate for and with care and caregivers? In this one-day workshop, we will bring together researchers from academia, industry, and community-based organizations to reflect on these questions and extend conversations on the future of technology for care work.

Technologies in the workplace have been a major focus of cscw, including studies that investigate technologies for collaborative work, explore new work environments, and address the importance of political and organizational aspects of technologies in work-places. Emerging technologies, such as AI and robotics, have been deployed in various workplaces, and their proliferation is rapidly expanding. These technologies have not only changed the nature of work but also reinforced power and social dynamics within work-places, requiring us to rethink the legitimate relationship between emerging technologies and human workers. It will be critical to the development of equitable future work arrangements to identify how these emerging technologies will develop relationships with human workers who have limited power and voice in their workplaces. How can these emerging technologies develop mutually beneficial partnerships with human workers? In this one-day workshop, we seek to illustrate the meaning of human-machine partnerships (HMP) by highlighting that how we define HMP may shape the design of future robots at work. By incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives, we aim to develop a taxonomy of HMP by which we can broaden our relationship with embodied agents but also evaluate and reconsider existing theoretical, methodological, and epistemological challenges in HMP research.

Going through a break-up can be difficult. Break-ups are emotionally fraught;two people have to untangle their lives. While prior research has paid attention to the implications of a break-up on the involved parties' mental and emotional well-being, and identified best practices for healing and growing from a break-up, these findings and practices are not well suited to how people's lives and experiences are represented in social media. People know how to break-up offline;however, they - and by extension, social media algorithms that recommend or remind - lack the ability to accurately represent the experience of breaking up online. Features that encourage connection or reminiscence are ill-suited for handling break-ups, making suggestions at a time when they may not be perceived as appropriate or desired. In my dissertation, I use three interpretivist, interview-based studies to investigate people's expectations of what is or is not appropriate behavior online after a break-up, and who to remain connected with on social media sites. My prior work established that algorithms are not always attuned to the nuances of human experiences like break-ups. Building on that work, my dissertation explores what people want when it comes to their online audiences and sharing behavior after going through a break-up, and leverages that understanding to offer design suggestions to improve both user experience and algorithmic systems in social media. My dissertation will result in empirical and design contributions that improve people's online experiences when going through a break-up.

More and more people form and maintain workplace relationships through computer-mediated communication tools nowadays. When all interactions are mediated by technology, people's impression of each other can be affected by the selective social cues transmitted by media. The way people present themselves through communication technology might not be perceived by their remote counterparts in the same way as they do. The mediated social cues could affect how people interpret the perceived action, further affecting impression formation and relationship maintenance between remote collaborators. It is unclear whether and how such mediated social cues cause perception gaps and how such perception gaps among different social connections play a part in relationship building in remote workplaces. The goal of my doctoral thesis is to identify the perception gap in computer-mediated communication and its impact on workplace relationship building. First, in a mixed-methods study in remote workplaces, I found that people's perceptions of their strongly and weakly connected colleagues become polarized when their collaboration is mediated by different communication technologies. Next, I specifically focused on relationship building between potential collaborators, which is another type of weakly connected collaborators in workplaces, via videoconferencing. In a controlled online study, I found that ambient cues from virtual backgrounds cause different impacts on first impressions of remote collaborators and perception of self. With this doctoral thesis, I aim to provide design implications on designing social cues to reduce the perception gaps introduced by communication technology in different stages of workplace relationship building.

Brain activity sometimes synchronises when people collaborate together on real world tasks. Understanding this process could to lead to improvements in face to face and remote collaboration. In this paper we report on an experiment exploring the relationship between eye gaze and inter-brain synchrony in Virtual Reality (VR). The experiment recruited pairs who were asked to perform finger-tracking exercises in VR with three different gaze conditions: averted, direct, and natural, while their brain activity was recorded. We found that gaze direction has a significant effect on inter-brain synchrony during collaboration for this task in VR. This shows that representing natural gaze could influence inter-brain synchrony in VR, which may have implications for avatar design for social VR. We discuss implications of our research and possible directions for future work.

Community detection is essential for identifying cohesive groups in complex networks. Artificial benchmarks are critical for evaluating community detection algorithms, offering controlled environments with known community structures. However, existing benchmarks mainly focus on homogeneous networks and overlook the unique characteristics of heterogeneous networks. This paper proposes a novel artificial benchmark, called ABCD-HN (Artificial Network Benchmark for Community Detection on Heterogeneous Networks), for community detection in heterogeneous networks. This benchmark enables the generation of artificial heterogeneous networks with controllable community quantity, node quantity, and community complexity. Additionally, an evaluation framework for artificial heterogeneous networks is proposed to assess their effectiveness. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of ABCD-HN as a benchmark for artificial heterogeneous networks. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
