Due to the features of FPGA architectures such as high performance and reconfiguration at run time, they have become remarkable contenders for many mission critical applications, much beyond rapid prototyping only. As the feature size of the semiconductor technology shrinks, also FPGA-based systems using underlying nano-technologies suffer from age induced parameter deterioration that may finally result in permanent faults. Hence, the mechanisms embedding into such systems for detecting and handling such faults in the field of operation is an essential requirement for increasing the reliability. This paper presents different approaches in handling the permanent faults in FPGA-based soft processors at a coarse and fine granularity. Self-repair methods are implemented through utilizing spare units as a substitute of corrupted units in the design and a partial reconfiguration technique. The method aims at using local fault handling methods to make use of extra resources in the system with the lowest overhead in time and area. The results were achieved by using Xilinx 28 nm technology and two soft processors.

In this paper, we propose a novel framework, called Hierarchical MDP framework for Compact System-level Modeling (HMCSM), for design and implementation of adaptive embedded signalprocessing systems. The HMCSM framework applies Markov decision processes (MDPs) to enable autonomous adaptation of embedded signalprocessing under multidimensional constraints and optimization objectives. The framework integrates automated, MDP-based generation of optimal reconfiguration policies, dataflow-based application modeling, and implementation of embedded control software that carries out the generated reconfiguration policies. HMCSM systematically decomposes a complex, monolithic MDP into a set of separate MDPs that are connected hierarchically, and that operate more efficiently through such a modularized structure. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our new MDP-based system design framework through experiments with an adaptive wireless communications receiver.

image blur and image noise are common distortions during image acquisition. In this paper, we systematically study the effect of image distortions on the deep neural network (DNN) image classifiers. First, we examine the DNN classifier performance under four types of distortions. Second, we propose two approaches to alleviate the effect of image distortion: re-training and fine-tuning with noisy images. Our results suggest that, under certain conditions, fine-tuning with noisy images can alleviate much effect due to distorted inputs, and is more practical than re-training.

This paper introduces a new general mathematical method for calculating the poles and zeros of a digital filter when transforming the poles and zeros of an analog filter in the s-domain into the poles and zeros of a digital filter in the z-domain by using inverse bilinear z-transformation with pre-warping frequency technique. This paper also analyzes the poles and zeros of the digital Butterworth filters and indicates where they are distributed in the geometric curve in the z-domain, which allows visualization of the pole-zero locations and the stability of the desired digital filter design. In addition, the center frequency and the notch frequency are discussed in the designing of the digital Butterworth band stop. From that, the relationships among the lower frequency, the upper frequency and the notch frequency are derived and used as a new method to design a digital Butterworth band stop filter. In a special case, in which the notch frequency is equal to one quarter of the sampling frequency fs, the pole-zero transfer functions of the digital Butterworth filters are also investigated and it can be used to design a half-band filter in multi-rate digital signalprocessing.

An integrated smart camera is a single chip composed of a sensor tightly coupled with one or more processing elements. The imageprocessing applications that are mapped on such systems can require processing power in the range of supercomputer. To face the increasing application needs we propose in this paper a SIMD based processor optimized for the low and intermediate level of imageprocessing. The architecture is composed of several SIMD cluster. Each cluster includes a configurable number of 2-Way PE (processing Element) ranging from 32 to 256 running at 200 MHz. These cluster configurations provide between 12 to 102 GOPS.

With the increase of technological developments, the speed limit of the processors that have emerged has accelerated the reduction of nanotechnological solutions of transistors into atomic dimensions from nanometers. Physical systems in which stochastic computation is critical instead of deterministic computation by taking action from atomic behavior are discussed. For this reason, as an interdisciplinary study, this paper will discuss the application of the arithmetic-logic unit in stochastic behavior for the design issues and imageprocessing applications. The logic level design made by considering the design constraints will be used during known image filtering operations. Probabilistic pixel values in binary that sent to the input of the arithmetic logic unit will be used in the Sobel imageprocessing operator. The images are processed with both conventional filter and stochastic filter, then the results obtained will be given visually.
