In this study, an efficient modified SPIHT algorithm and related architecture design is proposed for image compression. The proposed architecture is designed as a three stage pipeline structure. Different sized images are compressed using the designed architecture for different bpp values. The computed PSNR values of the compressed images using the proposed algorithm and also the original algorithm is compared in order to test the performance of the proposed algorithm and architecture.

This session should appeal to the researchers interested in the latest implementations of the MPEG standard in embedded platforms. The four papers propose cope with performance, energy and complexity issues. From different points of view, two of them deals with the Scalable standard. One presents an efficient parallel architecture while the other one analyses the existing trade-off between energy consumption and quality. Encoding complexity estimates are discussed in the third paper. The last paper comes back to the energy efficiency issue using a task-based programming model.

Nowadays applications require a high level of flexibility (adaptive scheduling and mapping in multi-core architectures, data driven execution, various operating modes, application scenarios, adaptation to environment, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling, workload balance…), with high constraints in terms of performances and low-power requirements. This poses the need for novel and efficient adaptive architectures and runtime management techniques. Partial and dynamical reconfiguration is supported in hardware for a decade, with different granularity, but still mainly relies on external intervention. Run-time management paradigms must now be defined, taking into account the dynamic evolution of applications. The special session contributions address the following design challenges: • Novel hardware architectures supporting dynamic management; • Software-/middleware-based dynamic management algorithms; • Methodologies for design and management of dynamically re-configurable systems.

a new EPDM multiplier circuit based on the dynamic charge technique has been introduced in this paper. We proposed an alternative EPDM multiplier scheme with double MOS-differential configuration resistor. This active resistor has matched devices biased in the triode region, and enables the multiplier to enhance the output linearity. Since the proposed technique removes the influences of bulk-source and drain-source voltages on circuit resistance with taken into account the effects of channel length modulation. It makes the developed new multiplier suitable enough for the architectures implementation of several analog VLSI neural networks.

Human activity recognition has been an active area of research in computer vision and artificial intelligence since the last two decades. This research aims to combine color information from RGBD with motion information from skeletal joints in order to capture subtle motions in the video which in used to tackle temporal features extraction. The researchers show this by using combined deep architecture: Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Stacked Auto-encoders (SAE). In this model CNN is used to learn motion representations from Motion History images (MHIs) of sampled RGB image frames. Whereas SAE is used to learn discriminative movements of human skeletal joints by taking the distances of joints from mean joint at each sampled frame. The proposed model is able to learn low level abstractions of joint motion sequences as well as how motion changes with location of image in each MHI frame. Both deep architectures were trained separately by averaging the Softmax class posteriors across the sampled frames to obtain score of the video clip. Normalize class scores of each of the networks in [0,1] range and perform late fusion by taking weighted mean of class scores based on relative performances of the two networks. The proposed model is evaluated on standard action recognition benchmarks of MSR Daily Activity3D and MSR Action3D datasets, where the proposed architecture has improved recognition accuracy.

Noise reduction is often performed at an early stage of the imageprocessing path. In order to keep the processing delays small in different computing platforms, it is important that the noise reduction is performed swiftly. In this paper, the block-matching and three-dimensional filtering (BM3D) denoising algorithm is implemented on heterogeneous computing platforms using OpenCL and CUDA frameworks. To our knowledge, these implementations are the first successful open source attempts to use GPU computation for BM3D denoising. The presented GPU implementations are up to 7.5 times faster than their respective CPU implementations. At the same time, the experiments illustrate general design challenges in using massively parallel processing platforms for the calculation of complex imaging algorithms.

This review focuses on efficient implementation of mixed-signal matrix-vector multiplication as a central computational primitive enabling machine learning and statistical signalprocessing, with specific examples in spatial filtering for adaptive beamforming We describe adaptive algorithms amenable for efficient implementation with such primitives in the presence of noise and analog variability. Noise pollution, in particular road traffic noise, is a growing concern. In general, noise reduction can be achieved at the source of noise emission, or by using anti-propagation or insulation measures. Measures at source are often the cheapest approach. This paper contributes to the development of enhanced environmentally-friendly vehicles by proposing an effective tire/road interaction noise mitigation method based on Active Noise Control (ANC). ANC methods can reduce the noise directly at the tires/road contact points by installing actuators (i.e. loudspeakers) inside the vehicle fenders. The proposed method will also reduce the noise propagating inside the vehicle and will hence eliminate the needs for passive noise reduction measures. As a result, the weight of the vehicles can significantly be reduced, thus requiring less resources for production and leading to an efficient fuel consumption during operation.
