Traditional metrics for evaluating the efficacy of image processing techniques do not lend themselves to understanding the capabilities and limitations of modern image processing methods - particularly those enabled by deep learning. When applying image processing in engineering solutions, a scientist or engineer has a need to justify their design decisions with clear metrics. By applying blind/referenceless image spatial quality (BRISQUE), Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) index scores, and Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) to images before and after image processing, we can quantify quality improvements in a meaningful way and determine the lowest recoverable image quality for a given method.

The need for security in today's world has become a mandatory issue to look after. With the increase in a number of thefts, it has become a necessity to implement a smart security system. Due to the high cost of the existing smart security systems which use conventional Bluetooth and other wireless technologies and their relatively high energy consumption, implementing a security system with low energy consumption at a low cost has become the need of the hour. The objective of the paper is to build a cost effective and low energy consumption security system using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. This system will help the user to monitor and manage the security of the house even when the user is outside the house with the help of webpage. This paper presents the design and implementation of a security system using PSoC 4 BLE which can automatically lock and unlock the door when the user in the vicinity and leaving the vicinity of the door respectively by establishing a wireless connection between the physical lock and the smartphone. The system also captures an image of a person arriving at the house and transmits it wirelessly to a webpage. The system also notifies the user of any intrusion by sending a message and the image of the intruder to the webpage. The user can also access the door remotely on the go from the website.

In this work the design of a new epiretinal stimulator approach with integrated bendable imaging sensor is presented. First, the fundamental differences to the existing retinal stimulation implants is described. In the second part, a brief description of the novel designed implant is given, where several integrated circuits are placed on a single polyimide foil to create the mechanically ftexible implant. Then the design of the developed dies is presented, containing the image sensor with a signal processing unit, a configurable waveform generator and a current controlled stimulation unit.

Despite the increase in digitization, the use of documents is still very common today. It is essential that these documents are correctly labeled and classified for their need to be archived in an accessible manner. In this study, we used state-of-the-art convolutional neural network models to satisfy this need. Convolutional Neural Networks achieve high performance compared to alternative methods in the field of classification, due to the strong and rich features they can learn from large data through deep architecture. For the experiments, we have used a dataset containing 400,000 images of 16 different document. classes. The state-of-the-art deep learning models have been tine-tuned and compared in detail. VGG-16 architecture has achieved the best performance on this dataset with 90.93% correct classification rate.

This paper focused on the design of a 2+1- order Switched-current MASH Delta-Sigma ADC with the digital cancellation circuit in TSMC 0.18-μm 1P6M CMOS process. To combat errors in MASH architectures, we have to cancel the errors by utilizing a pertinent digital cancellation circuit;the output of digital code contains the numbers and position of characteristics to the latter part of the digital filter to facilitate the processing. We proposed an algorithm for the logic circuit and employed simplified delay block in digital cancellation circuit to cancel the noise errors from the earlier stage, and to generate a third-order noise shaping output. Our simulation results show that signal-To-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) is 90.4 dB, and the effective number of bits (ENOB) is 14.73 bits at a sampling rate of 10.24 MHz with an oversampling ratio (OSR) of 256, and the signal bandwidth is 20 kHz. This design draws 12.99 mWfrom the supply voltage of 1.8V and occupies a core area of 0.14 mm2. © 2017 IEEE.

Shutterless frame store charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are commonly used in ground-based solar observations, but the characteristical readout smear error of such devices hinders an application of frame store CCDs to autonomous missions. The combination of polarimetric modulation and image accumulation disables a correction of this error via software-based post-facto processing if in addition microvibrations occur during flight. This paper presents the first FPGA-based architecture for online smear correction of images from frame store CCDs, which allows for the usage of a certain frame store CCD camera on a balloon-borne solar observatory. First, we explore fast convolution-based algorithms with respect to their properties for an implementation. Afterwards, a hardware architecture is derived and implemented. Our results show that 400 frames of megapixel size can be corrected per second, maintaining an acceptable power consumption of less than 12 Watt. Finally, we discuss the circuit and show the degrees of freedom for further designs.

Developing mixed-signal analog-digital neuromorphic circuits in advanced scaled processes poses significant design challenges. We present compact and energy efficient sub-threshold analog synapse and neuron circuits, optimized for a 28nm FD-SOI process, to implement massively parallel large-scale neuromorphic computing systems. We describe the techniques used for maximizing density with mixed-mode analog/digital synaptic weight configurations, and the methods adopted for minimizing the effect of channel leakage current, in order to implement efficient analog computation based on pA-nA small currents. We present circuit simulation results, based on a new chip that has been recently taped out, to demonstrate how the circuits can be useful for both low-frequency operation in systems that need to interact with the environment in real-time, and for high-frequency operation for fast data processing in different types of spiking neural network architectures.

In the classification of high-dimensional hyperspectral images, only spectral information is not sufficient to obtain successful results when the number of training data is small. In this case, spatial information can be exploited as well as spectral information. For this purpose, we aimed to use spatial information obtained from the fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm and spectral information together with the help of composite kernels to classify hyperspectral images. The composite kernels obtained in experimental studies are used for classification purposes by using extreme learning machines (ELM) and support vector machines (SVM);in addition to that, the results were presented comparatively in the tables.

This paper includes the design and implementation of an intelligent and automated traffic control system which takes advantages of computer vision and image processing techniques. Along with conventional computer vision techniques, this paper introduces two new methods which has low processing cost. One of the methods has been constructed with the help of hardware and the other one is designed without hardware support. This is a complete traffic management system which has been able to reduce traffic jams and congestion on simulated environment. It detects the number of vehicles on each road and depending on the vehicles load on each road, this system assigns optimized amount of waiting time (red signal light) and running time (green signal light). This system is a fully automated system that can replace the conventional pre-determined fixed-time based traffic system with a dynamically managed traffic system. It can also detect vehicle condition on road and auto-adjust the system according to the changing road conditions which makes the system intelligent. The designed system can help solving traffic problems in busy cities to a great extent by saving a significant amount of man-hours that get lost waiting on jammed roads. This research focuses on factors, low-cost image processing and traffic load balancing.

Detecting spot-like objects of different sizes in images is needed in many applications. Multiple image scales must then be handled for reliable spot segmentation. We define an original criterion based on the a contrario approach and the LoG scale-space framework to automatically select the meaningful scales. We then design a coarse-to-fine multi-scale spot segmentation scheme involving a locally adaptive thresholding across scales, to come up with the final map of segmented spots. We report experimental results on simulated and real images of different types, and we demonstrate that our method outperforms other existing methods. © 2017 IEEE.
