Depth measurement is the most basic measurement in various machine vision, such as automatic driving, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), robot and so on. And it has a wide range of use. With the development of image processing technology and the improvement of hardware miniaturization and processing speed, real-time depth measurement using dual cameras has become a reality. In this paper, an embedded AM5728 and the ordinary low-cost dual camera is used as the hardware platform. The related algorithms of dual camera calibration, image matching and depth calculation have been studied and implemented on the hardware platform, and hardware design and the rationality of the related algorithms of the system are tested. The experimental results show that the system can realize simultaneous acquisition of binocular images, switching of left and right video sources, display of depth image and depth range. For images with a resolution of 640 x 480, the processing speed of the system can be up to 25 fps. The experimental results show that the optimal measurement range of the system is from 0.5 to 1.5 meter, and the relative error of the distance measurement is less than 5%. Compared with the PC, ARM11 and DMCU hardware platforms, the embedded AM5728 hardware is good at meeting real-time depth measurement requirements in ensuring the image resolution.

In this paper, a study of the parallel exploitation of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier with a linear kernel running on a Massively Parallel Processor Array platform is exposed. This system joins 256 cores working in parallel and grouped in 16 different clusters. The main objective of the research has been to develop an optimal implementation of the SVM classifier on a MPPA platform whilst the architectural bottlenecks of the hyperspectral image classifier are analyzed. Experimenting with medical images, the parallelization of the SVM classification has been conducted using three strategies: i) single- and multi-core processing, ii) single- and multi-cluster analysis and iii) single- and double-buffer execution. As a result, an average core processing speedup of 11.8 has been achieved when parallelizing the SVM classification process in a single cluster. On the contrary, since data communication accounts for 34.7% of the total execution time in the sequential case, the total speedup is upper-bounded to 2.9. Using a double-buffer methodology, a total speedup of 2.84 has been achieved on a single cluster. At last, the feasibility of a portable version of a linear SVM has been demonstrated.

Due to energy efficiency, heterogeneous computing is gaining more and more attention. Since FPGA implementations are time consuming, high-level synthesis (HLS) is used to close the productivity gap. OpenCL has become accepted as a good programming model for HLS, due to its portability, good capability of design verification and rich instruction set. This work implements different optimization strategies using OpenCL for a heterogeneous system containing CPU, integrated GPU, GPU and FPGA. Energy efficiency and performance of the architectures are compared using a feature detection algorithm. It is shown how to maximize performance while hitting the maximum memory bandwidth and keeping the resource utilization low for the SDAccel tool from Xilinx. The evaluation shows the great streaming capability of OpenCL for FPGAs. The FPGA achieves a speed up of 62.8 and consumes 49 times less energy for the application in comparison to an optimized single threaded CPU implementation in full HD.

Recent work in computer graphics has explored the synthesis of indoor spaces with furniture, accessories, and other layout items. In this work, we bridge the gap between the physical and virtual worlds: Given an input image of an interior or exterior space, and a general user specification of the desired furnishings and layout constraints, our method automatically furnishes the scene with a realistic arrangement and displays it to the user by augmenting the original image. Our method can deal with varying layouts and target arrangements at interactive rates, which affords the user a sense of collaboration with the design program, enabling the rapid visual assessment of various layout designs, a process which would typically be time consuming if done manually. Our method is suitable for smartphones and other camera-enabled mobile devices.

Hybrid precoding, which refers to the combined use of phased arrays and digital (baseband) beamforming, is the main transceiver architecture under consideration for millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless systems. However, this configuration is not suitable for receivers with a single RF chain, that must rely on fully-analog beamforming. In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the best analog beam combination when user terminals have independent analog sub-arrays. We present a novel algorithm for beam selection that separates analog and digital beamforming components. First, we use hierarchical analog beamforming codebooks to obtain a combination of beamformers that maximize SNR at the receivers. We leverage multiple RF chains at the AP and sub-arrays at the users to design such hierarchical codebooks. Second, we use digital zeroforcing beamforming at the transmitter to eliminate inter-user interference. Preliminary numerical results show the effectiveness of our algorithm in simple scenarios.

In its 71th meeting, the JPEG committee issued a call for low complexity, high speed image coding, designed to address the needs of low-cost video-over-ip applications. As an answer to this call, Fraunhofer IIS and the Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart jointly developed an embedded DCT image codec requiring only minimal resources while maximizing throughput on FPGA and GPU implementations. Objective and subjective tests performed for the 73(rd) meeting confirmed its excellent performance and suitability for its purpose, and it was selected as one of the two key contributions for the development of a joined test model. In this paper, its authors describe the design principles of the codec, provide a high-level overview of the encoder and decoder chain and provide evaluation results on the test corpus selected by the JPEG committee.

Measurement of visual quality is of significant importance to many image processing tasks. The target of image quality assessment (IQA) is to design effective computational models in order to automatically predict the quality of images in a perceptual consistent manner. We propose a full reference (FR) IQA metric based on information-theoretic IQA framework and passive aggressive learning algorithm. We model the image distortion process with a signal attenuation matrix and an additive noise matrix in wavelet domain. The ridge regression is employed to get the initial attenuation matrix. The passive aggressive algorithm is then utilized in order to learn the particular attenuation matrix of each image block. At last we measure the perceptual quality by quantifying the loss of visual information to the proposed distortion model through an information-theoretic IQA framework. Our proposed metric is learning-free because the learning algorithms are adopted just in order to learn the attenuation matrix of each image block, and no training data is needed in the proposed metric. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed IQA metric is competitive with existing learning-free IQA metrics;moreover, cross database validation shows that the proposed IQA metric has a satisfying generalization ability.
