This paper introduces a new way of interaction in JFCS Software where users can view and navigate easily between different combinations of fuzzy colors and pixels in images. Fuzzy colors allow introducing semantics in the description of color by using linguistic labels, filling the semantic gap between the color representation in computers and the subjective human perception. JFCS (Java Fuzzy Color Space) Software, an open source (GPLv3) software with a user-friendly interface, provides an easy framework to design and automatically obtain customized fuzzy color spaces on the basis of an approach proposed by the authors in previous work. This new functionality in JFCS endows it with a very useful tool to visually analyze correspondences between pixels and fuzzy colors in images. Users can obtain combined mapped images where regions, corresponding to a combination of color concepts, are highlighted. In addition, users can describe and interact, in a simple and visual way, with colors present on a given image in terms of fuzzy colors.

In realm of optical SETI, searches for pulsed laser signals have historically been preferred over those for continuous wave beacons. There are many valid reasons for this, namely the near elimination of false positives and simple experimental components. However, due to significant improvements in laser technologies and light-detection systems since the mid-20th century, as well as new data from the recent Kepler mission, continuous wave searches should no longer be ignored. In this paper we propose a search for continuous wave laser beacons from an intelligent civilization in the Andromeda galaxy. Using only a 0.8 meter telescope, a standard photometric system, and an image processing pipeline, we expect to be able to detect any CW laser signal directed at us from an extraterrestrial civilization in M31, as long as the civilization is operating at a wavelength we can "see" and has left the beacon on long enough for us to detect it here on Earth. The search target is M31 due to its high stellar density relative to our own Milky Way galaxy. Andromeda is home to at least one trillion stars, and thus at least one trillion planets. As a result, in surveying M31, we are surveying one trillion planets, and consequently one trillion possible locations of intelligent life. This is an unprecedented number of targets relative to other past SETI searches. We call this the TPS or Trillion Planet Survey.

In this paper, we present a novel design of an optical power splitter. Owing to the inherent variable power split ratios that the proposed design delivers, it is ideal for use in communications, sensing and signal processing applications where variable power splitting is often quintessential. The proposed power splitter module is dual mode as it combines the use of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) and an Electronically Controlled Tunable Lens (ECTL) to split the power of an input optical signal between two output ports - the designated port and the surplus port. The use of a reflective Digital Spatial Light Modulator (DSLM) such as the DMD provides a motion-free digital control of the split ratio between the two output ports. Although the digital step between two possible successive split ratios can be fairly minimal with the use of a high resolution DMD but it is a challenge to correctly ascertain the exact image pattern on the DMD to obtain any desired specific split ratio. To counter this challenge, we propose the synchronized use of a circular pattern on the DMD, which serves as a circular clear aperture with a tunable radius, and an ECTL. The radius of the circular pattern on the DMD provides a digital control of the split ratio between the two ports whereas the ECTL, depending on its controller, can provide either an analog or a digital control by altering the beam radius which is incident at the DMD circular pattern. The radius of the circular pattern on the DMD can be minimally changed by one micro-pixel thickness. Setting the radius of the circular pattern on the DMD to an appropriate value provides the closest "ball-park" split ratio whereas further tuning the ECTL aids in slightly altering from this digitally set value to obtain the exact desired split ratio in-between any two digitally-set successive split ratios that correspond to any clear aperture radius of the DMD pattern and its incremental minimal al

A comprehensive model for staring array simulation is described. The model covers all effects from photon signal generation through to detection and processing in the staring array sensor. The model follows the signal flow from photon generation, through a staring focal plane array (FPA) from the detector, through several conversions in the read out integrated circuit (ROIC) and finally conversion to a digital signal. Spatial nonuniformity modeling for photoresponse, dark current generation and source follower offset is included. The list of noise sources includes: photon noise, quantum conversion uncertainty, dark noise, kTC noise, source follower noise and quantization noise. Several components with (simplified) nonlinear responses are also modeled: sense node capacitance variation with charge, source follower nonlinearity and nonlinearity in the digital conversion. The code implementations take images as input, applying the various processes independently on individual pixels (e.g., shot noise) or on complete images (e.g., spatial nonuniformity). Some noise sources vary temporally across frames (shot, thermal, kTC) while other noise sources are fixed across frames (fixed pattern noises). The application of the model is demonstrated by tracing the signal path from source to sensor output, with intermediate results along the path. The model is implemented in Python (as part of the pyradi open source computational radiometry module) and in a C++ image simulation. The purpose with this work is to predict what the performance of a given sensor will be in terms of image appearance, given the devices specifications and key design parameters. The execution of this work lead to the important recommendation that nonuniformity correction for infrared sensors should be performed at well fill levels corresponding to the minimum and maximum in the scene, not to fixed percentage levels in the charge well. Machine learning and related statistical signal processing are expected to endow sensor networks with adaptive machine intelligence and greatly facilitate the Internet of Things. As such, architectures embedding adaptive and learning algorithms on-chip are oft-ignored by the design community and present a new set of design trade-offs. This review focuses on efficient implementation of mixed-signal matrix-vector multiplication as a central computational primitive enabling machine learning and statistical signal processing, with specific examples in spatial filtering for adaptive beamforming. We describe adaptive algorithms amenable for efficient implementation with such primitives in the presence of noise and analog variability. We also briefly highlight current trends in high-density integration in emerging memory device technologies and their use in highdimensional adaptive computing.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have proven very effective in image classification and show promise for audio. We use various CNN architectures to classify the soundtracks of a dataset of 70M training videos (5.24 million hours) with 30,871 video-level labels. We examine fully connected Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), AlexNet [1], VGG [2], Inception [3], and ResNet [4]. We investigate varying the size of both training set and label vocabulary, finding that analogs of the CNNs used in image classification do well on our audio classification task, and larger training and label sets help up to a point. A model using embeddings from these classifiers does much better than raw features on the Audio Set [5] Acoustic Event Detection (AED) classification task.

Embedded IoT devices are often built upon large system on chip computing platforms running a significant stack of software. For certain computation-intensive operations such as signal processing or encryption and authentication of large data, chips with integrated FPGAs, FPGA SoCs, which provide high performance through configurable hardware designs, are used. In this contribution, we demonstrate how an FPGA hardware design can compromise the important secure boot process of the main software system to boot from a malicious network source instead of an authentic signed kernel image. This significant and new threat arises from the fact that the CPU and FPGA are connected to the same memory bus, so that FPGA hardware designs can interfere with secure boot routines on FPGA SoCs that are without any interruption on regular SoCs. An enabling factor is that integrated hardware designs are likely bought from external partners and there is a realistic lack of security review at the system integrators. This facilitates flaws or even unwanted functionality in such hardware designs. We perform a proof of concept on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGA SoC, and the threat can be generalized to other devices. We also present as effective mitigation, an easy-to-review and re-usable wrapper module which prevents any unauthorized memory access by included hardware designs.

As semiconductor manufacturing continues its march towards more advanced technology nodes, it becomes increasingly important to identify and characterize design weak points, which is typically done using a combination of inline inspection data and the physical layout (or design). However, the employed methodologies have been somewhat imprecise, relying greatly on statistical techniques to signal excursions. Therefore, common operations such as background-based binning that are designed to identify frequently failing patterns cannot reliably identify specific weak patterns. They can only identify an approximate set of possible weak patterns, but within these sets there are many perfectly good patterns. Additionally, characterizing the failure rate of a known weak pattern based on inline inspection data also has a lot of fuzziness. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) Review attempts to come to the rescue by capturing high resolution images of the regions surrounding the reported defect locations, but SEM images are reviewed by human operators and the weak patterns revealed in those images must be manually identified and classified. Compounding the problem is the fact that a single Review SEM image may contain multiple defective patterns and several of those patterns might not appear defective to the human eye. In this paper we describe a significantly improved methodology that brings advanced computer image processing and design-overlay techniques to better address the challenges posed by today's leading technology nodes. Specifically, new software techniques allow the computer to analyze Review SEM images in detail, to overlay those images with reference design to detect every defect that might be present in all regions of interest within the overlaid reference design (including several classes of defects that human operators will typically miss), to obtain the exact defect location on design, to compare all defective patterns thus detected against a library of known

Infrared signal processing algorithms and architectures are important for the development of a high performance infrared imaging systems. Infrared signal processing deals with two types of processing sensor signal processing and infrared image processing for contrast enhancement and target detection. The sensor signal processing primarily deals with non uniformity correction for infrared sensors. Assessing the quality of the Infrared video frame is a complex and firm process since human's opinion is affected by physical and psychological parameters. Infrared Video frame quality assessment plays an important role in the field of video processing. Structural Similarity Index has become a standard among image quality metrics. It is a framework for quality assessment based on the degradation of structural information of video frame. In this paper SSIM values are computed and compared for Infrared video frames by applying different edge detection approaches by using different color models to assess the quality of the frames. Experimental results comparisons demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
