More and more modern processors have been supporting non-contiguous SIMD data accesses. However, translating such instructions has been overlooked in the Dynamic Binary Translation (DBT) area. For example, in the popular QEMU dynamic binary translator, guest memory instructions with strides are emulated by a sequence of scalar instructions, leaving a significant room for performance improvement when the host machines have SIMD instructions available. Structured loads/stores, such as VLDn/VSTn in ARM NEON, are one type of strided SIMD data access instructions. They are widely used in signal processing, multimedia, mathematical and 2D matrix transposition applications. Efficient translation of such structured loads/stores is a critical issue when migrating ARM executables to other ISAs. However, it is quite challenging since not only the translation of structured loads/stores is not trivial, but also the difference between guest and host register configurations must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present the design and implementation of translating structured loads/stores in DBT, including target code generation as well as efficient SIMD register mapping. Our proposed register mapping mechanisms are not limited to handling structured loads/stores, they can be extended to deal with normal SIMD instructions. On a set of OpenCV benchmarks, our QEMU-based system has achieved a maximum speedup of 5.41x, with an average improvement of 2.93x. On a set of BLAS benchmarks, our system has also obtained a maximum speedup of 2.19x and an average improvement of 1.63x.

This paper presents a survey and evaluation of the implementation of ECG signal processing algorithms on embedded architectures. ECG signal analysis and extraction of various features as QRS complex are important tasks in either clinical or biomedical practice. To this end, our work aims at developing a system for real-time monitoring of cardiac data based on an embedded architecture, which guarantees an accurate analysis without loss of information and allowing the extraction of all the necessary characteristics for an effective and fast diagnosis of patient's cardiac status.

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) excel at the implementation of local operators in terms of throughput per energy since the off-chip communication can be reduced with an application-specific on-chip memory configuration. Furthermore, data-level parallelism can efficiently be exploited through socalled loop coarsening, which processes multiple horizontal pixels simultaneously. Moreover, existing solutions for proper border handling in hardware show considerable resource overheads. In this paper, we first propose novel architectures for image border handling and loop coarsening, which can significantly reduce area. Second, we present a systematic analysis of these architectures including the formulation of analytical models for their area usage. Based on these models, we provide an algorithm for suggesting the most efficient hardware architecture for a given specification. Finally, we evaluate several implementations of our proposed architectures obtained through Vivado High-Level Synthesis (HLS). The synthesis results show that the proposed coarsening architecture uses 32% less registers for a 5-by-5 convolution with a 64 coarsening factor compared to previous works, whereas the proposed border handling architectures facilitate a decrease in the Look-up Table (LUT) usage by 36 %.

Energy-efficient computing has increasingly come into focus of research and industry over the last decade. Ultra-low-power architectures are a requirement for distributed sensing, wearable electronics, Internet of Things and consumer electronics. In this paper, we present a dual-mode platform that includes an ultra-low power Cortex Arm M4 microcontroller coupled with a highly energy efficient multi-core parallel processor. The platform is designed to maximize the energy efficiency in sensors applications by exploiting the Cortex Arm M4 to achieve ultra-low power processing and power management, and enables the multi-core processor to provide additional computational power for near-sensor data centric processing (i.e. accelerating Convolutional Neural Networks for image classification) increasing energy efficiency. The proposed platform enhances the application scenarios where on-board processing (i.e. without streaming out the sensor data) enables intensive computation to extract complex features. The platform is geared towards applications with limited energy budget, as for example in mobile or wearable scenarios where the devices are supplied by a battery. Experimental results confirm the energy efficiency of the platform, demonstrate the low power consumption, and the benefits of combining the two processing engines. Compared to a pure microcontroller platform we provide a boost of 80x in terms of computational power when running general purpose code and a boost of 560x when performing convolutions. Within a reasonable power budged of 20 mW compatible to battery-operated scenarios the system can perform 345 MOPS of general purpose code or 1.5 GOPS of convolutions.

In this study, an efficient modified SPIHT algorithm and related architecture design is proposed for image compression. The proposed architecture is designed as a three stage pipeline structure. Different sized images are compressed using the designed architecture for different bpp values. The computed PSNR values of the compressed images using the proposed algorithm and also the original algorithm is compared in order to test the performance of the proposed algorithm and architecture.

Rapid technological progress has changed the way of people shopping. Online shopping allows consumers to directly buy products or services over the Internet using a web browser. In addition, mobile commerce makes the online sales transactions happen in anytime and everywhere using wireless electronic devices such as mobile phones or laptops. Mobile shopping in QR code virtual stores is a kind of special shopping experience. Using a camera phone with QR code reader installed, a customer can buy the items displayed on the media by flashing their camera phones on the items and the items would be delivered to them through credit card payment. Many QR code shopping walls were created in Mass Rapid Transit stations, malls or public places in big cities recently. In this study, we try to construct a smart shopping wall to enhance the fun in QR code shopping experiences. An integrated system was designed to allow customers controlling the showing page of product Ads on the electronic (TV) displays using skeleton-based hand gesture recognition. The system also can estimate the customer's gender and age via facial image recognition using deep learning algorithms. Microsoft Kinect depth sensor was applied in our system and it provided a good sensor to catch facial images and skeleton information for the purpose of recognition. Experimental results show that the gender and age classification can achieve high recognition accuracy. Finally, an experimental system is completed based on the proposed framework. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

image blur and image noise are common distortions during image acquisition. In this paper, we systematically study the effect of image distortions on the deep neural network (DNN) image classifiers. First, we examine the DNN classifier performance under four types of distortions. Second, we propose two approaches to alleviate the effect of image distortion: re-training and fine-tuning with noisy images. Our results suggest that, under certain conditions, fine-tuning with noisy images can alleviate much effect due to distorted inputs, and is more practical than re-training.

A design scheme of a visible optical passive ranging system based on micro main board was presented. In this system, all the software logic including the passive ranging algorithm based on target feature size was concentrated on the computer motherboard. The hardware part only completed the function execution and physical support, which could greatly improve the product integration degree, and reduce the volume and weight of the product. The system mainly included high definition imaging sensor unit, active laser night vision unit and signal processing unit. Through the design of hardware and software, the system could realize passive ranging. The system adopted the 980nm laser night vision technology which is invisible to the human eyes. The technology with good concealment could realize the image situation awareness and information acquisition at night. Through passive ranging experimental verification, the ranging accuracy of the system prototype was less than 10%. With the current hardware configuration parameters, the ranging distance to the person was more than 1km with good robustness and stable performance. The actual engineering practice can be widely used in all-weather situation awareness and optical passive ranging of target.

Overall enhancement for poorly illuminated satellite images (remote sensing images) and similar dark images (from other domain) is always a very challenging task where information is inherited in a very dense manner. In general, conventional intensity-based enhancement approaches usually suffered with insufficient colorfulness as well as saturation artifacts, and hence, never leads to desired overall enhancement as such. This article presents a novel gamma correction strategy, where the gamma value-set itself has been derived from optimally compressed and equalized intensity profile achieved with proper saturation restoration. The simulation results authenticate the overall enhancement (contrast as well as entropy enhancement along with sharpness enhancement) achieved by the proposed has been found superior to other dark image enhancement techniques.
