We present a visualanalytics system SemanticPrism, which aims to analyze large-scale high-dimensional datasets containing logs of a million computers. SemanticPrism visualizes the data from three different perspectives: geo-temporal, time series curve, and pixel visualization. With each perspective, we use semantic zooming to present more detailed information.

The Common N-Gram (CNG) classifier is a text classification algorithm based on the comparison of frequencies of character n-grams (strings of characters of length n) that are the most common in the considered documents and classes of documents. We present a text analytic visualization system that employs the CNG approach for text classification and uses the differences in frequency values of common n-grams in order to visually compare documents at the sub-word level. The visualization method provides both an insight into n-gram characteristics of documents or classes of documents and a visual interpretation of the workings of the CNG classifier.

The vast 2018 company communication dataset reflects current challenges in analyzing specific sub-group within a large dynamic network. We apply multiple visual analytic techniques. This also includes a traceability system, a custom visualization tool enable tracing a focused group on multivariate dynamic networks. We manage to tackle the tasks of abstracting group structural features and discovering other groups tied closely.

For the 2012 vast Challenge, we federate a number of tools together and exploit the best capabilities of each to analyze geolocated cyber security data. We augment the geographic tools with our own custom-designed frequency analysis plots developed in the Processing programming language. This combination of tools provides access to the best features of each and implies design criteria for future cyber security toolkits.

We present a visualanalytics tool, called Spectrum, to analyze the movement and communication log data from vast Challenge 2015. Spectrum has two views: MoveView and SpectrumView. MoveView gives an overview of the movement logs at a certain timestamp by synthesizing time, location and identity information. It replays movement logs over time and demonstrates communication logs with dynamic links. SpectrumView shows the status of all visitors' activities within a period of time. Each stay of visitors in a location is visualized as a line segment. The duration and location type of the stay are encoded by the length and color of the segment. Accumulating segments of the same visitor horizontally and aligning sequences of segments from different visitors form a general view of all visitors' activities. In our attempt to solve the vast Challenge 2015, we find that Spectrum provides an intuitive overview of the log data and helps to discover movement patterns from a large number of log records.

Despite the extensive work done in the scientific visualization community on the creation and optimization of spatial data structures, there has been little adaptation of these structures in visualanalytics and information visualization. In this work we present how we modify a space-partioning time (SPT) tree - a structure normally used in direct-volume rendering - for geospatial-temporal visualizations. We also present optimization techniques to improve the traversal speed of our structure through locational codes and bit-wise comparisons. Finally, we present the results of an experiment that quantitatively evaluates our modified SPT tree with and without our optimizations. Our results indicate that retrieval was nearly three times faster when using our optimizations, and are consistent across multiple trials. Our finding could have implications for performance in using our modified SPT tree in large-scale geospatial-temporal visualanalytics software.

Gaining insights from large amount of movement data is one of the biggest challenges in management and decision making support. This paper presents a safety-oriented visualanalytics approach emphasising kids' safety to identify various semantic groups from people movement data in a park. Notable differences of people movement among sites are also discovered in the visualanalytics.

In this paper, we propose EathquakeAware, a visualanalytics system for social media visualization. Our system supports analyzing geo-tagged messages from different perspectives, including location, keyword, account. It can summarize the evolution patterns of topics and reveal the discussing trend of different keywords to help evaluate situations in different regions. We take vast Challenge 2019 Mini Challenge 3 as case studies to demonstrate its effectiveness in a fictitious analysis scenario.

uRank is a Web-based tool combining lightweight text analytics and visual methods for topic-wise exploration of document sets. It includes a view summarizing the content of the document set in meaningful terms, a dynamic document ranking view and a detailed view for further inspection of individual documents. Its major strength lies in how it supports users in reorganizing documents on-the-fly as their information interests change. We present a preliminary evaluation showing that uRank helps to reduce cognitive load compared to a traditional list-based representation.

The vast 2014 Mini-challenge 2 [2] provided a set of GPS vehicle tracking and credit card transaction data with the aim of inferring behaviour of those using the vehicles and credit cards. In particular it required designing or applying a visualanalytics system to identify typical behaviours with which atypical, suspicious activity could be contrasted. It is an example of the more general case of inferring behaviour from movement records (e.g., from mobile devices [6] or public bikeshare schemes [1]). In this brief paper we summarise the design taken to address the particular vast challenge while proposing a general approach to movement-based behaviour detection.
