Range sensors have drawn much interest for human activity related research since they provide explicit 3d information about the shape that is invariant to clothing, skin color and illumination changes. However, triangulation-based systems like structured-light sensors generate occlusions in the image when parts of the scene cannot be seen by both the projector and the camera. Those occlusions, as well as missing data points and measurement noise, depend on the structured-light system design. These artifacts add a level of difficulty to the task of human body segmentation that is typically not addressed in the literature. In this work, we design a segmentation model that is able to reason about 3d spatial information, to identify the different body parts in motion and is robust to artifacts inherent to the structured-light system, such as triangulation occlusions, noise and missing data. First, we build the first realistic sensor-specific training set by closely simulating the actual acquisition scenario with the same intrinsic parameters as our sensor and the artifacts it generates. Second, we adapt a state-of-the-art fully convolutional network to range images of the human body in order for it to transfer its learning toward 3d spatial information instead of light intensities. Third, we quantitatively demonstrate the importance of simulating sensor-specific artifacts in the training set to improve the robustness of the segmentation of actual range images. Finally, we show the capability of the model to accurately segment human body parts on real range image sequences acquired by our structured light sensor, with high inter-frame consistency and in real-time.

Portable photogrammetry methods are being used more and more as a 3d technique for large scale industrial metrology applications. Optical targets are placed on an object and images are taken around it, where measuring traceability is provided by precise off-process pre-calibrated digital cameras and scale bars. According to the 2d target image coordinates, target 3d coordinates and camera views are jointly computed. Numerical approaches such as bundle adjustment have usually been adopted for computing the 3d scene, with high computation time, leading in practice to time consuming and user dependent iterative review and re-processing measuring procedures until an adequate set of images is taken, limiting the potential of photogrammetry for fast, easy-to-use, and precise measurements. In a previous work, a new efficient computing procedure was presented for solving the bundle adjustment problem in portable photogrammetry. In this paper, further steps are presented towards increasing the computational efficiency of the in-process approach in portable photogrammetry. measurement of raw part surface geometry prior to its machining is adopted as the industrial case for evaluation, with large scale measuring volumes (100 m3). An increase of efficiency in the in-process computing capability is demonstrated on a consumer grade desktop PC, with a total in-process computing time ranging 1 second per image for all the images taken at all the computed industrial scenarios. Additionally, a method for the self-calibration of camera and lens distortion is integrated into the in-process approach, enabling the use of low cost non-specialized digital cameras for precise industrial metrology, ranging at the same performance reported for portable photogrammetry with precise off-process pre-calibrated cameras, with a relative precision of 1/10,000 (e.g. 0.1 mm error in 1 m). © 2019 European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology, conference Proceedings - 19th International

This paper discusses the issues of orthogonal distance geometric fitting, the registration of multiple data sets, and identification based on geometric features for very large data sets of spatial measurement data obtained, for example, from a 3d scanner. The data of interest is obtained from an industrial application, namely, from inside a tunnel as it is being bored and reinforced with tiling. The task at hand is to identify each of the tiles in the scan, and to determine whether their position and geometry satisfy given tolerances. The paper describes a chain of processing whereby aspects of approximation theory, image processing, differential geometry, and pattern recognition are applied. The processing steps are determined as tradeoffs between the desired accuracy of the computation and its computational load. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Metrology of 3d NANd device architecture is challenging due to structural complexity, low signal to noise and contrast to noise ratio in the electron micrographs. Efficient, automated tools that can measure critical dimensions of 3d NANd in electron micrographs can be a part of solution for process monitoring, uniformity control and structural modelling through OCd, Cd-SEM, e-beam tech., etc. In this paper we present an automated technique based on a snake algorithm in a multi-stage, scale-space framework to delineate continuous interfaces between different materials/layers of 3d NANd cells. The snake algorithm takes an initial contour and forces the initial contours to move and deform towards the interface between different material layers using an iterative energy minimization process while preserving the continuity and smoothness of the contour. At the end of energy minimization, the interface between different materials such as central hole, core silicon oxide, poly silicon, tunneling silicon oxide, silicon nitride with storage function, blocking silicon oxide, outer metal layers, etc., are delineated and marked by labelled contours. Prior knowledge, if available, about the number of material-layers and approximate distance between them can be used to improve the efficiency of the process. The proposed method transforms the micrograph into a digital metrology image where critical dimensions such as thickness of the materials, shape of the material layers, etc., can be automatically measured. The additional information provided by continuous contours can be used with 'Big data' analytics to uncover patterns, variations, and outliers that may go unnoticed in discrete measurement data.

Ultrasound (US) is the modality of choice for fetal screening, which includes the assessment of a variety of standardized growth measurements, like the abdominal circumference (AC). Screening guidelines define criteria on the scan plane, in which the measurement is taken. As US is increasingly becoming a 3d modality, approaches for automated determination of the optimal scan plane in a volumetric dataset would greatly improve the workflow. In this work, a novel framework for deep hyperplane learning is proposed and applied for view plane estimation in fetal US examinations. The approach is tightly integrated in the clinical workflow and consists of two main steps. First, the bounding box around the structure of interest is determined in the central slice (MPR). Second, offsets from the structure in the bounding box to the optimal view plane are estimated. By linear regression through the estimated offsets, the view plane coordinates can then be determined. The presented approach is successfully applied on clinical screening data for AC plane estimation and a high accuracy is obtained, outperforming or comparable to recent publications on the same application.

Electrode manufacturing is one of the most critical processes within the energy storage production chain, as the electrodes coating and drying quality determines the later performance of the energy storage system in large part. Critical quality losses within the electrode coating are often optical visible, but cannot be automatically and inline inspected. Often small defects like agglomerates, capillary cracks or pinholes in the carbon or metal oxide based layers have to be detected at high web speeds. In the work described in this paper it was examined which kind of features and defects can be recognized by two optical methods: visual inspection and 3d measuring. A visual camera in conjunction with a white illumination and a 3d data laser line system has been used. image processing algorithms are applied on the scanned data to detect pinholes and agglomerates. Also thickness of coating, gradient of the coating edge and form anomalies can be determined out of the produced data. Reliable evaluation of pinholes even of small sizes has been proofed. Particle agglomerations are more challenging. To achieve good enough data for 3d evaluation standard sensors are often insufficient, due to the necessary resolution and the production speed that requires high scanning frequency. In order to provide an automated, digitalized production and inspection system, the devices were coupled to a central experiment management system. Their operation is controlled non-locally in the cloud and synchronized with the execution of experiments. The acquired raw data is stored for later evaluation and long-term archiving.

There are many components having both diffused and specular surfaces together, which called as complex object. The existing fringe projection profilometry and deflectometry can only measure 3d (three-dimensional) shape of diffused and specular surfaces, respectively. This paper presents a novel method to measure 3d shape of complex objects by combining fringe projection profilometry and dPMd (direct phase measuring deflectometry) technique. The specular parts of a complex object reflect fringe pattern of two LCd (Liquid Crystal display) screens and the other parts diffuse the projected fringe pattern from a dLP (digital light processing) projector. All the specular reflected and diffused deformed fringe patterns are simultaneously captured by multiple color channels of a color camera from a different viewpoint. The reflected and diffused fringe patterns on the measured complex object are easily extracted from the captured color images. The absolute phase information is calculated from the extracted fringe patterns. After 3d calibration to build up the relationship between phase and depth, 3d shape data of the measured complex object are obtained. An artificial complex step having diffused and specular surfaces has been manufactured to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that this method can measure complex surfaces effectively. © 2019 ACM.

A satellite processing platform for high resolution forest assessment (FORSAT) was developed. It generates the digital surface models (dSMs) of the forest canopy by advanced processing of the very-high resolution (VHR) optical satellite imagery and automatically matches the pre- and post-fire dSMs for 3d change detection. The FORSAT software system can perform the following tasks: pre-processing, point measurement, orientation, quasi-epipolar image generation, image matching, dSM extraction, orthoimage generation, photogrammetric restitution either in mono-plotting mode or in stereo models, 3d surface matching, co-registration, comparison and change detection. It can thoroughly calculate the planimetric and volumetric changes between the epochs. It supports most of the VHR optical imagery commonly used for civil applications. Capabilities of FORSAT have been tested in two real forest fire cases, where the burned areas are located in Cyprus and Austria. The geometric characteristics of burned forest areas have been identified both in 2d plane and 3d volume dimensions, using pre- and post-fire optical image data from different sensors. The test studies showed that FORSAT is an operational software capable of providing spatial (3d) and temporal (4d) information for monitoring of forest fire areas and sustainable forest management. Beyond the wildfires, it can be used for many other forest information needs. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
