Geological section measurement is a necessary task for regional geological survey. Traditional method using tapeline together with compass has many limitations such as multiple manual measurements along different orientation across different structures, visual conditions, tapeline bending, manual measurement error and second projection defects. Point coordinates method recently established have allowed us to use points with X, Y, Z values to obtain terrain control profiles. However, it is difficult to adequately reveal the spatial and tectonic characteristics of outcrops in arbitrary orientation using sparse GPS coordinates. In order to obtain more realistic geological structural features, this paper propose a new section measurement method that utilizes high-density point cloud data with X, Y, Z values obtained by LidAR and high-resolution digital images with RGB values. Based on digital image processing technology, the high-resolution digital images are fused with the high-density point cloud data. And then, a digital outcrop model (dOM) is generated, which contains spatial coordinate information, RGB values of any points of outcrops and surface morphological features in a 3d space. Finally, a geological section in arbitrary orientations can be generated efficiently and quickly under the point coordinate method after the dOM ortho-projected. Because the spatial resolution of point cloud data reaches millimeter scale, the outcrop section parameters extracted by this approach, such as fault displacement, stratum thickness, are more precise than manual measurements (generally only meter scale). Furthermore, LidAR and photogrammetry are both non-contact measurement technologies, which greatly reduce the potential risk of geologists in the field environments like cliff. © 2019 IEEE.

image-based metric measurement has been widely used in industry for the past decade due to the recent advancement in processing power and also the unobtrusiveness of this method. In particular, this method is gaining attention in the realm of real-time detection, classification, and inspection of vehicles used in intelligent transportation systems for law enforcement. These systems have proven themselves as a plausible competition to under-the-pavement loop sensors. In this paper, we analyze the sensitivity in image-based metric measurement for vehicles' wheel base estimation. Results lead to a simple guideline for calculating the optimal configuration yielding the highest resolution and accuracy. More specifically, we address the sensitivity of the metric measurements to the depth (i.e., the distance between the camera and the vehicle) and also internal calibration parameters of the visible-light imaging system (i.e., camera's intrinsic parameters). We assumed a pinhole projection model with added barrel effect, aka, lens distortion. A 3d video simulation was developed and used as a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbed for verification and validation purposes. Through a simulated environment, three case studies were conducted to verify and validate theoretical data from which we concluded that the error due lens distortion accounted for 0.014% of the total error whereas the uncertainty in the depth of the vehicle with respect to the location of the camera accounted for 99.8% of the total error.

Fatigue performances of additively manufactured metals are affected by the high temperature gradients and high cooling rates occurring during laser beam melting. More generally, mechanical properties strongly depend on the process parameters (scan speed, laser power, laser spot size, etc.). The present study proposes a calorific analysis of the fatigue response of 3d-printed maraging steel from thermal measurements obtained by infrared (IR) thermography. Fatigue damage is indeed associated with heat production leading to material self-heating. Analysis of the thermomechanical response was performed in two steps: first, measurement of temperature maps on the specimen surface by IR camera;second, calculation of the calorific origin of the temperature changes by image processing based on the heat diffusion equation. Using specific thermal data acquisition conditions, the processing enabled us to extract the heat power density corresponding to the mechanical dissipation caused by fatigue. The study was performed on specimens featuring a specific geometry and printed with different process parameters. distinguishing differences in the production of mechanical dissipation at the beginning of fatigue tests can be useful to determine relevant configurations for long-term fatigue durability.

There are many components having both diffused and specular surfaces together, which called as complex object. The existing fringe projection profilometry and deflectometry can only measure 3d (three-dimensional) shape of diffused and specular surfaces, respectively. This paper presents a novel method to measure 3d shape of complex objects by combining fringe projection profilometry and dPMd (direct phase measuring deflectometry) technique. The specular parts of a complex object reflect fringe pattern of two LCd (Liquid Crystal display) screens and the other parts diffuse the projected fringe pattern from a dLP (digital light processing) projector. All the specular reflected and diffused deformed fringe patterns are simultaneously captured by multiple color channels of a color camera from a different viewpoint. The reflected and diffused fringe patterns on the measured complex object are easily extracted from the captured color images. The absolute phase information is calculated from the extracted fringe patterns. After 3d calibration to build up the relationship between phase and depth, 3d shape data of the measured complex object are obtained. An artificial complex step having diffused and specular surfaces has been manufactured to verify the proposed method. Experimental results show that this method can measure complex surfaces effectively.

Functional diffuse Optical Tomography (fdOT) has the potential to provide the functional status of tissue by mapping 3d distribution of chromophores concentration in deep tissue non-inversely. Region-of-Interest (ROI) dOT, we presented earlier, uses optical patch using only a few NIR light sources and detectors arranged in a circular pattern for the depth-sensitive 3d dOT imaging of the tissue at a high-speed. However, ROI dOT system is not portable enough to carry with and to operate in an unconstrained setting. In this work, we have developed a handheld ROI fdOT system that allows functional imaging of tissue wirelessly. We have proposed a new embedded system architecture based on the Internet-of-things (IoT) concept. Our low-level embedded system and analog circuit design, and embedded computing algorithm also capable of source modulation, lock-in detection, onboard calibration and basic signal processing for the continuous wave (cw) dOT measurement at a high speed while reducing the overall form factor of the system. The optical probe has two sets of source and detector, each contains four triple-wavelengths NIR LEds and four silicon-photodiode detectors arranged at two different source-detector separations. The handheld system sends measured data to a server wirelessly in real-time. The server performs high-speed GPU-based ROI 3d fdOT image reconstruction and displays result at 3 frames-per-second. The image reconstruction algorithm solves the diffusion equation using the finite element method and utilizes two depth sensitive measurement sets. The experimental results of regional tissue imaging on eight participants have proven the working of the system.

In the management of lung nodules, it is important to precisely assess nodule size on computed tomography (CT) images. Given that the malignancy of nodules varies according to their composition, component-wise assessment is useful for diagnosing lung cancer. To improve the accuracy of volumetric measurement of lung nodules, we propose a deep learning-based method for segmenting nodules into multiple components, namely, solid, ground glass opacity (GGO), and cavity. We train a 3d fully convolutional network (FCN) with component-wise dice loss and apply a conditional random field (CRF) to refine the segmentation boundaries. To further gain the accuracy, we artificially generate synthetic cavitary nodules based on clinical observations and then augment the dataset for training the network. In experiments using about 300 CT images of clinical nodules, we evaluated our method in terms of mean absolute percentage error of volumetric measurement. We confirmed that our method achieved 15.84% lower error (averaged over 2 components of solid and GGO) compared with a conventional method based on image processing, and the error for cavity was decreased by 2.87% with our data-synthesis method.

Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) is an additive manufacturing (AM) method developed as an evolution of the digital Light processing (dLP) principle. Utilizing an oxygen-permeable window below the ultraviolet image projection plane, the step-wise motion of the dLP printer can be avoided by maintaining a persistent liquid interface, thus allowing for a continuous growth of the printed specimen. To investigate the capabilities of this new process, a state-of-the-art CLIP AM machine was utilized to manufacture a series of reference specimens developed following the design of existing metrological transfer standards. The reference specimens were measured by a tactile coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to assess the manufacturing capability of the CLIP printer. Measurands included dimensions of 1d, 2d and 3d geometrical features as well as form errors (flatness, roundness, sphericity). Specifically, a flat hole-plate containing a grid of 25 evenly spaced holes (nominal diameter 5.5 mm, nominal pitch 25 mm) was used to assess the in-plane printing accuracy and precision of the holes’ centres. Additionally, a ball-plate specimen containing 4 spheres (nominal diameter 22 mm) was produced measured to characterise the sphericity, as well as the printing accuracy and precision of the spheres’ centres. The metrological characterization of the two reference specimens by CMM metrology allowed to determine the production capability of the used CLIP machine, and to highlight advantages and limitations of the CLIP method. The traceability of the CMM measurements was established by performing an uncertainty assessment using the calibrated artefacts corresponding to the two additively manufactured CLIP specimens. In the weld quality inspection system based on machine vision and computer image processing, according to the principle of laser triangulation, a line laser is used to project structured light on the weld surface, and the weldment moves uniformly in a straight line on the moving platform. At the same time, the CMOS camera captures the structured light image and transmits it to the industrial computer through Gigabit Ethernet. The image is denoised by the median filtering algorithm on the industrial computer, then the image is segmented by the maximum inter-class error (Otus) method, and the image is binarized according to the threshold value. Then the center of the stripe is extracted by constructing four direction templates, and the 3d model is reconstructed by curve fitting. After the completion of the image processing, the geometric size of the weld is measured by mathematical formula. After the weld seam measurement is completed, the weld seam is transversely cut off at the same position, measured by manual method, and then the data measured by the two methods are compared. Through repeated measurements and comparisons of weld width, residual height and back forming, the precision of the system meets the practical requirements. The weld forming varies with the welding parameters within a certain range, but changes little and has good stability. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
