The digital pixel based image sensors with 3D integrated and pixel-parallel read-out-integrated-circuits (ROIC) show potential for high resolution and high frame rate in many mission critical surveillance applications. However, fixed pattern noise (FPN) caused by process variations of ROIC aggravates the quality of image and further degrades the performance of deep neural network (DNN). This paper studies the effect of process variations in digital pixel circuits and resulting image noise on the accuracy of a DNN. We propose a digital pixel-DNN cross-layer simulation methodology for accurate training and evaluation of DNN under noise induced from process variations. The simulation results show that the process variation in the digital pixel creates distinct noise structure and should be accurately considered while training a DNN. We also present design space explorations using our cross-layer simulation.

In the modern era of digital photography and advent of smartphones, millions of images are generated every day and they represent precious moments and events of our lives. As we continue to add images to our digital storehouse, the management and access handling of the images becomes a daunting task and we lose track unless properly managed. We are in essential need of a tool that can fetch images based on a word or a description. In this paper, we try to build a solution that retrieves relevant images from a pool, based on the description by looking at the content of the image. The model is based on deep neural network architecture and attending to relevant parts of the image. The algorithm takes a sentence or word as input and obtains the top images which are relevant to the caption. We obtain the representation of the sentence and image in a higher dimension, which enables us to compare the two and find the similarity level of both to decide on the relevance. We have conducted various experiments to improve the representation of the image and the caption obtained in the latent space for better correlation, for e.g. use of bidirectional sequence models for better textual representation, use of various baseline convolution-based stacks for better image representation. We have also tried to incorporate the attention mechanism to focus on only the relevant parts of the image and the sentence, thereby enhancing the correlation between the two spaces.

Due to the complex geometry and physical models of real-world engineering applications, the parallel performance of the mainstream computational fluid dynamics(CFD) codes is unsatisfactory. For complex fluids, an extra stress tensor governed by constitutive equations including nine components brings much more amount of computations. This paper focused on optimizing the most compute-intensive part of a simulation for complex fluids: the iterative linear solver for solving multicomponent equations. Based on the most widely used opensource CFD code OpenFOAM, we unrolled the component loops and replaced the blocking collective MPI calls to non-blocking communications. After operation rescheduling between the loops, the collective communications could be partly overlapped by the computations. Taking the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithm for instance, we presented the complete loop unrolled algorithm for solving multi-component equations. The numerical experiments showed 8.0%~29.0% simulation time reduction for a demonstrative case with 2 million cells on 64~2048 cores. It is worth noting that the approach proposed in this paper is a high-level scheduling algorithm and could be used in combination with other intra-component optimization algorithms, e.g. the pipelined CG methods.

We consider the problem of finding an acceptable schedule of a set of preemptive jobs, for which there are two types of resources renewable and non-renewable. At specified points in time, requests for additional jobs are received that do not allow interruptions and require only renewable resources. We characterized each job by a directive interval and volume. It is required to determine whether there is an acceptable schedule for the entire set of jobs and build it, if it exists. To solve this problem, we developed an algorithm based on reducing it to the problem of the minimum cost flow in a network of a special kind. Tasks of this kind arise in the development of real-time systems, in particular on-board systems, systems for processing large amounts of economic and environmental information in real time, transport and conveyor systems.

The paper considers the problem of multi-frame super-resolution under applicative noise which generates distributed regions of outlying observations (damaged regions) in initial low resolution images. It analyses the existing solutions to the problem based on using recurrent algorithms of optimal filtering of a sequence of low resolution images. The paper also considers the existing super-resolution algorithms based on convolutional neural networks and deep learning models. A new approach and a corresponding image processing scheme is suggested for multi-frame image super-resolution under applicative noise based on using a convolutional neural network. The paper presents the results of the experiment conducted in order to compare the considered approaches to multi-frame image super-resolution by means of a sequence of low resolution frames under applicative noise.

This paper presents a retinal slip estimation algorithm and a novel tracking strategy for active event-based cameras. Event-based sensors have independent, asynchronous pixels that report local luminance change. Unlike conventional image sensors, the event cameras have a high dynamic range and high temporal resolution. To preserve these advantages, we propose an algorithm that enables estimates of the normal component of the optical flow to be updated as spikes come in, eschewing the accumulation of events within a fixed temporal window. We also propose a method for integrating these normal flow estimates to estimate the retinal slip between the camera and object. We demonstrate the advantages of this asynchronous estimator of the retinal slip using an active event camera simulator (AESIM), which we developed to enable simulation of the active control of an event sensor in a dynamic environment.

In real life, the traffic flow in each direction of the intersection is different, sometimes the gap is relatively large. Most of the existing literatures treat each traffic flow at the intersection fairly and do not distinguish their actual characteristics, which leads to the traffic efficiency of the intersection is limited. In this paper, a packet traffic flow theory is studied and a scheme of crossing is designed. The scheme divides the traffic flow into several groups. The groups were called packets. Some packets are serial, and the others are parallel. On the premise of considering the traffic fairness, more traffic time is provided for the large traffic flow. Theoretical calculation and simulation experiments show that, the scheme can better play the role of real-time traffic data, and the traffic efficiency increased by 14.28%. Therefore, the work of this paper enriches the traffic flow control mode at the intersection.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) represent a technological revolution in measuring instruments, resulting from the convergence of miniaturized electronic systems and wireless communication systems. These are sets of miniaturized electronic units that can measure certain physical phenomena in the environment in which they are deployed. Because of the constraints of miniaturization, and also of manufacturing cost, the sensor nodes are generally endowed with very limited resources in terms of energy, computing capacity, data storage space, and transmission rate. These limitations motivate a large part of the research problems in the field of WSN, in particular, energy constraint which is a fundamental issue. The goal of this work is to offer a novel routing protocol based on the differential evolution algorithm (DE) in WSN to minimize energy consumption and increase the network life cycle, called DEBCRP (Differential Evolution Based Clustering and Routing Protocol). The performance of the offered protocol is tested using the MATLAB programming language. The simulation results prove the energy efficiency of our contribution.

Friction is an omnipresent phenomenon in all mechanical systems, inducing uncertainties and acting as a major disturbance in manufacturing technologies and in the field of the micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS & NEMS). The effects of friction can generally be compensated in the macro- and mesoscale applications. Multiple concurrent effects of various atomic-scale phenomena in the asperity contacts hinder, however, the prospect of a satisfactory insight into the fundamental tribological behaviour in the micro- and nanoscales. An in-depth fundamental understanding of nanoscale frictional behaviour is, thus, of outmost technological importance. An approach using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is, hence, proposed in this work to study the tribological behaviour in the nanoscale (atomic) contacts. Recent thorough scanning probe microscopy experimental measurements of nanoscale friction on various thin-film materials are thus used as benchmark for MD simulations, allowing to attain important insights into the dynamics of a sliding tip on an aluminium thin-film surface while varying the normal loads. A sound basis for future more complex models, which will include adhesive effects and oxide layers, is thus accomplished, creating the preconditions to deepen further the fundamental knowledge of important tribological phenomena. © 2021 Proceedings of the 21st international conference of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology, EUSPEN 2021. For self-driving cars that operate based on battery-generated power, detection and control are commonly performed in embedded systems to reduce power consumption. To drive safely without driver intervention, it is essential to operate object detection algorithms with high accuracy and fast detection speed within autonomous driving embedded systems. This paper proposes new methods to predict the localization uncertainty by applying Gaussian modeling to the DNN-based tiny YOLOv3 algorithm and consequently, to drastically improve accuracy at the expense of a slight penalty of detection speed by using it in post-processing. Compared to the baseline algorithm (i.e., tiny YOLOv3), the proposed algorithm, tiny Gaussian YOLOv3, improves the mean average precision (mAP) by 2.62 and 4.6 on the Berkeley deep drive (BDD) and KITTI datasets, respectively. Nevertheless, the proposed algorithm is capable of performing real-time detection at 55.56 frames per second (fps) on the BDD dataset and 69.74 fps on the KITTI dataset, respectively, under the mode 0 of the autonomous driving embedded platform, Jetson AGX Xavier.
