We address the question of how best to fit animal movement paths, represented by point relocation time series, to a novel stochastic walk model - referred to as M-cubed - in a way that captures movement patterns at several different spatio-temporal scales. We test our approach on simulated data obtained from a high-frequency, multi-mode model constructed using the Numerus Model Builder platform. The advantage of using simulated over empirical data is that we know the processes generating movement. Fitting M-cubed to data requires that we extract movement modes and phases at various scales ranging from subhourly to daily. After fitting the M-cubed model, we evaluate how well it captures movement patterns and find that it performs exceptionally well at minute to hourly scales but needs to be extended to capture daily scale patterns driven by particular landscape features. © 2020 SCS.

System characterizations must be expressed in requirements specifying components to be developed. But requirements cannot express system behavior very well. Even with perfect requirements, the omission of the system behavior verification leads at best to an incomplete test program. This is where the scenario based testing comes in and brings a paradigm shift in the system test specification by extending the purpose of the classical acceptance test at system level. The scenario based testing now makes it possible to test and evaluate the system behavior from the user's point of view.

We need to train the next generation of scientists, modelers and analysts to be technically competent and socially aware transdisciplinary collaborators. Model thinking and Modeling and simulation can play an even more significant role in society if we expand our horizons beyond socio-technical problems and tackle broader challenges impacting the human condition. In this paper, we discuss transdisciplinary collaboration, inclusion and social awareness as three pillars that can form the basis for maintaining and increasing the relevance of our field in a world where technological change is outpacing our ability to manage and predict its impact on key aspects oflife and society.

Reinforcement learning has been shown capable of learning optimal strategies from imperfect information environments in order to create robust decision support systems. This paper shows that two automatic feature transformation techniques - Bayesian recurrent neural network (BRNN) for modelling future price trends and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for modelling short-term realistic price variability - are able to improve the performance of reinforcement learning agents in solving portfolio management problem effectively, when measured in terms of increasing profitability and reducing risks.

Electromagnetic waveforms are an essential component of radar and electronic warfare digital computer simulations. Sampled representations of radar waveforms are widely used in high-fidelity applications for their physical realism and suitability for algorithmic processing. However, this fidelity comes at a price because operations on sampled representations are often a computationally costly simulation bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a generic framework for constructing a reduced, feature-based model component derived from a given high-fidelity component, and demonstrate the approach on a simplified radar waveform model. The reduced model is related to the original through an approximate morphism. Both supervised and unsupervised machine learning are key components of the framework.

System Entity Structures (SES) are used to define families of systems. In this context they are employed in combination with a model base (MB) to describe a set of simulation models. Using a framework, simulation models are generated from the SES/MB in a goal-oriented manner, executed and their results analyzed. The entire process is automated, iterative and reactive. A concrete system variant in the family of systems is derived by pruning an SES. For the process of automated model generation, it is necessary to provide automatic pruning mechanisms. Especially for some types of nodes comprised in an SES, automatic pruning is a big challenge. Here, the challenges that arise when pruning SES containing hierarchies of multi-aspect and specialization nodes are analyzed and a solution is proposed.

Modeling and simulation (M&S) is one of the most multifaceted topics present today in both industry and academia. However, we are involved in a new M&S paradigm. Systems are becoming more complex and new simulation needs arise and have to be studied. As a consequence, the way in which we perform M&S must be adapted, providing new ideas and tools. In this paper, we propose a rule-based constraints evaluator, which facilitate the validation and verification of complex models in a transparent manner. For this, constraints are defined. The constraints definition process is completely independent of the model development process because (a) the set of constraints is defined once the model has been developed, and (b) constraints are validated at simulation time. The proposed Constraint M&S architecture has been built using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism and has been tested on a validated data center simulation model.

The North American bulk power system is one of the most vital infrastructures in modern society as it accounts for virtually all the electricity supplied to the United States, Canada, and a portion of Baja Notre California, Mexico. Cyberattacks, of all forms, are becoming increasingly prominent within power networks and other infrastructures whereas their resolution can consume a significant deal of time and monetary resources. This can be further worsened if there are subsequent physical attacks in the wake of a cyberattack, as the system downtime leaves the government, military, and other critical infrastructures incredibly vulnerable This research aims to investigate if different patterns of cyberattacks could be identified with speed using simulation and machine learning algorithms. More specifically, we design a simulation model that can help better defend against cyber threats.

It is useful to model the interactions between the water and energy models separately. A coupled water and energy model using an interaction model lends itself to developing flexible, yet rigorous predictive simulation studies. A WEAP-LEAP interaction model is developed based on the Knowledge Interchange Broker modeling approach. A RESTful simulation framework is developed for coupling the Componentized-WEAP and Componentized-LEAP systems. Every interaction model is defined to have a set of modules where each module has its input and output ports with data transformation schemes. The input and output ports of the Componentized-WEAP and Componentized-LEAP models are coupled with those of the interaction model. A cyclic, synchronous execution protocol is defined for concurrent, bidirectional data transformations. The computational efficiency of this loosely coupled water-energy framework is acceptable compared with the tightly WEAP-LEAP system. This proposed framework shows understanding the water-energy system nexus is advantageous using interaction modeling.
