We investigate an approach of predicting marine sensor data in short-term using fuzzy clustering. the proposed method uses the similar pattern sequences with their weights using fuzzy clustering for prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed method helps in improving the accuracy in prediction over some existing approaches.

Video streams generate the better part of the internet traffic due to platforms such as YouTube and Youku in China. A novel genre-adaptive solution is presented in this paper benefitting from an interdisciplinary approach combining image and sound processing features from pattern recognition with high-level concepts from Mass Communications. It is shown that it is possible to automatically analyze videos for bundles of syntactical features which represent semantic high-level concepts which are typical for certain genres. In this way, semantic concepts called “Key Visuals” [1] as well as generic semantic concepts with obvious relevance to certain genres can be identified and classified in videos. Once identified it is possible to use the video shots assigned to these semantic concepts to create video abstracts by a dramaturgical synthesis of video shots which can serve the purpose of trailers to inform prospective viewers though such a “trailer” about the content of videos. Other applications could be semantic video retrieval based on the identified semantic features. We describe the concepts of a system capable of automatically generating quite convincing video trailers for some important genres by using low-level audio and video processing algorithms, context-based knowledge and a rule-based system.

In real human crowds, diversification is caused by many factors such as gender, age, skin color, clothing, walking style, psychology etc., yet most crowd simulation systems rely only on appearance related variables for diversification. this research explores improving crowd diversity by simulating the biomechanical effects of aging in humans within crowd characters. Simulated characters were reprogrammed to be able to predict their behavior through an aging parameter predictor using support vector regression respective to their age. Data from gerontology studies recording spinal curvature and walking pattern deterioration with age were used for training. A spatial diversity algorithm was designed and implemented to distribute the resulting variants evenly among each other. Evaluations were conducted to gauge the impact on the diversification of the crowd simulation. the results prove that simulating posture and walking pattern deterioration in older characters does significantly improve biomechanical diversity within a virtual human crowd.

the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) model has been widely used in multi-core clusters as an alternative to MPI. Among the widespread use is Unified Parallel C (UPC). Previous research has shown that UPC performance is comparable with MPI, however in certain cases UPC require hand-tuning techniques such as pre-fetching and privatized pointers-to-shared to improve the performance. In this paper we reviews, evaluate and analyze the performance pattern between UPC Naive, UPC optimize and MPI on two different multi-core clusters architecture. We focus our study using matrix multiplication as the benchmark and perform our experimental on two distributed memory machine;Cray XE6 with Gemini interconnects and Sun Cluster with Infiniband interconnects. We provide analysis on each core execution time to understand the pattern of communication for both machines. We also demonstrate the gaps between naive and optimized are depends on the compiler with its associate distributed memory machine. We also observed unnecessary optimization for certain programs related to HPC architecture and compiler.

Nonuniform energy consumption is an inherent problem in wireless sensor networks characterized by multi-hop routing and many-to-one traffic pattern. Such unbalanced energy dissipation can significantly reduce network lifetime. In this paper, we study the problem of prolonging network lifetime in large scale wireless sensor networks where a mobile sink gathers data periodically along the predefined path and each sensor node uploads its data to the mobile sink over a multi-hop communication path. For this problem, we propose a heuristic topology control algorithm with time complexity O(n(m + n log n)), where n and m are the number of nodes and edges in the network, respectively, and further discuss how to refine our algorithm to satisfy practical requirements such as distributed computing and transmission timeliness. theoretical analysis and experimental results show that our algorithm is superior to several earlier algorithms for extending network lifetime.

In this paper, utilization of hybrid computational approach is evaluated for the joint estimation of amplitude and Direction of Arrival of far field sources impinging on a uniform linear array. In this hybrid approach, swarm intelligence based on Particle swarm optimization is exploited as a global optimizer assisted with pattern search technique as a rapid local search technique. the optimization of adaptive parameters depending upon the amplitudes and direction of arrival is performed using the fitness function based on Mean Square Error that defines an error between desired response and estimated response. the interest in this function is due to its ease in implementation, efficiency and simplicity of concept. It is derived from Maximum Likelihood and requires only single snapshot to converge. the proposed algorithm is robust enough to produce fairly good results even in the presence of low signal-to-Noise Ratio and requires relatively less number of antenna elements in the array. the results of hybrid technique are much better as compared to Particle Swarm Optimization and pattern search alone. A number of test cases are discussed on the basis of different number of sources impinging on the array with different number of sensors in the array. the accuracy and reliability of the proposed scheme is tested on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations and its superior statistical analysis.

Although there have been many advances in electromyography (EMG) signal processing and pattern recognition (PR) for the control of multi-functional upper-limb prostheses, some the outstanding problems need to be solved before practical PR-based prostheses can be put into service. Some of these are the lack of training and deployment protocols and the provision of the tools required. therefore, we present a preliminary procedure to personalize the prosthesis deployment. In the first step, we record the demographic information of each individual amputee person and their background. In the second step of the protocol, the EMG signals are acquired. PR algorithms and parameters will be chosen in the 3rd step of the protocol. In the 4th step, the best number of EMG sensors to achieve the maximal performance with a full set of gestures is identified. the final step involves finding the best set of movements that the amputee person can produce with an accuracy > 95% as well as identifying the movements with the worst performance, which would require further training. this proposed approach is validated with 2 transradial amputees.

there has been a tremendous growth in the adoption of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems for media distribution and file sharing. However, P2P is now also being used as underlying technology for other purposes such as the distribution of software updates or as infrastructure for a distributed information repository. the research introduced in this paper is motivated by a use case in the latter area. this use case addresses the problem of document and information sharing between educational institutions in Malaysia. the additional challenge is that apart from not having any central instance peers have regular, daily down-times. During the night all peers disappear altogether. Hence the challenge is to find an effective way to set-up a P2P information and document sharing system taking into account the special characteristic of the dis- and re-appearing peers. In this paper, we investigate various bootstrapping architectures for the proposed Scalable Private Reappearing Overlay Network (SPRON). the bootstrapping needs to be self-organize, scalable and handle deterministic churn rate during its network formation period for peers (or computers) in various operational levels of the ministry of education. the deterministic churn rate is defined as the continuous process of node arrival and departure pattern of a P2P system. Within this paper we present the background information of the research theme, problem statements, and a proposed Scalable Private Reappearing Overlay Network (SPRON) design to illustrate a specialized P2P network and its unique set of requirements. the main focus of the paper is the presentation of the finding of our investigation regarding the bootstrapping performance of Chord, Chord with Aggressive Join, and Kademlia in order to establish the most appropriate P2P structure to base our system on. through this we determine the suitability of these structured networks as the foundation in the proposed Scalable Private Reappearing Overlay Network design.

Today's systems require a higher consideration for non functional requirements as security and dependability. Developers have to handle these requirements during software development lifecycle. To provide developers with security guidelines, security patterns were proposed. these patterns are a collection of experts' security knowledge and a good solution to convey security concepts. In order to encourage developers to take advantage from security solutions proposed by security patterns, we think that it is necessary to provide an appropriate mechanism to implement those patterns using UML profiles. In this paper, we propose a structured UML profiles construction process based on security patterns. An illustration of the proposed process is provided using the "active replication" pattern. A case study of GPS system is also provided to demonstrate the application of generated UML profile using the proposed process.

In Pervasive computing research, substantial work has been directed towards radio-based sensing of human movement patterns. this research has, however, mainly been focused on movements of individuals. this paper addresses the joint identification of the movement indoors of multiple persons forming a cohesive whole - specifically flocks - with clustering approaches operating on three different feature sets derived from WiFi signals which are comparatively analysed. Automatic detection of flocks has several important applications, including social and psychological sensing and emergency research studies. We use a dataset comprising 16 subjects forming one to four flocks walking in a building on single and multiple floors. For the detection of flocks we achieved an average F-measure accuracy of up to 85 percent. We report on the advantages and drawbacks of the three different types of feature sets considering their suitability for use "in the wild" or in well-defined environments.
